Student Athlete Advisory Committee
women's soccer team capture the Cifuentes Cup
WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM USES "DYNAMITE" PEFORMANCE TO WIN SECOND ANNUAL SAINTS STAR SEARCH Apr. 26: St. Lawrence University student-athletes competed in the Second Annual Saints Star Search last Thursday, attempting to win the Cifuentes Cup with their talents, skills, and creativity.
The event took place in the Burkman Gymnasium, as over five hundred people packed the stands to watch fellow teammates, friends, and classmates try to impress a trio of "veteran" judges. Men's soccer head coach Bob Durocher, head softball and field hockey coach Fran Grembowicz, and head football coach Chris Phelps rated the competing teams based on creativity, preparation, and talent. If the crowd or judges were unimpressed with a team's performance, the student-athletes were gonged off stage.
The second Saints Star Search was hosted by Max Perez and Isaac Noyes of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). After twenty-two performances, the judges scores were announced and the Cifuentes Cup went to the Women's Soccer Team! Freshman Caitlin Quinn got the crowd into the soccer team's performance, as she showed off her Napoleon Dynamite-moves with her teammates backing her up. Even Durocher couldn't keep still as he and Phelps got up and showed off moves that no one had ever seen before!
Battling for second place were the softball team and men's soccer team, as each got very solid reviews from the panel of judges. Softball performed a step dance put together by Yralee Mendez, while the men's soccer squad danced around their sophomore back Sean Charles. With the two teams tied, Perez and Noyes used the International Method of Tiebreaking to settle the score: Rock, Paper, Scissors. The men's soccer team pulled the scissors and cut their way to a second place finish.
Other notable performances included a Slam Dunk contest by the men's basketball team, a double cheeseburger relay by the football team, dance routines from the men's and women's crew teams, "Yo Mama" jokes from the women's hockey team, and a feeble rendition of "Afternoon Delight" by the men's hockey squad.
"Caitlin really stole the show and showed us that she can break it down on the dance floor," said Grembowicz. "Teams are going to have to do better next year if they plan to take the Cifuentes Cup from the women's soccer team."
