Women's Hockey Team Captures Fourth Annual

Saints Star Search Championship

On April 14, 2008 the Student Athletic Advisory Committee hosted the St. Lawrence University’s 4 th Annual Star Search. If you were standing outside of Augsbury gym at 8pm you could not only hear laughter and applause, but you could find six of St. Lawrence’s athletic teams either dancing or performing a comedy skit from Mad TV.

The participants for this year Star Search included our Women’s Track, Women’s Lacrosse, Women’s Soccer, Women’s Hockey, Softball, and the Men’s Soccer Team. Assistant Men’s Lacrosse Coach Ryan Glennon, who proved to be a close representation of Simon from “American Idol” and both of our Assistant Men’s and Women’s Crew Coaches Lauren Schulz and Tracey Tallman served as judges for the competition.

Even though the competition was tight, there could still only be one winner. The judges ranked up to third place for all to see. Coming in third was the Women’s Lacrosse’s team who danced for the judges and audience to “Rock and Roll Part 2 (The Hey Song)”. In second was Women’s Soccer, who presented a skit from “Mad TV.” Finally, the winners for the 2008 Star Search were the Women’s Hockey Team who danced to “Hey Mickey” in some fabulous costumes straight out of the 80’s.

We would like to thank all of the participating teams and judges for making Star Search such a great event, as well as the audience for their energy. We would also like to send out a thank you to Ben Augliano for his excellent dunking skills between acts and using the correct hoop!

Racial Inequities on College Sports

On December 13, 2007, St. Lawrence University was selected to receive a grant from the NCAA to bring a facilitator on campus who would discuss the topic of Race and College Athletics.

The grant came into fruition on Monday, February 25, 2008. The event was held in Eben Holden starting with session #1 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and session #2 from 7:00pm- 9:00pm. Over 50 student-athletes came to the event from various sports teams and from various racial, ethic, and religious backgrounds.

Facilitator Rodney Patterson, who has over 15 years of experience in the field of diversity at both the educational and corporate levels, did a great job conducting the issues at hand. Although the topic of race and diversity can be a tough subject to traverse, the student-athletes did an excellent job in participating in the discussions.

The St. Lawrence athletes were honest and open which really helped with the goal of understanding the creation of race and racism and the effects on college athletics. Overall, a generalization can be made that each person left with something to think about and to bring back to their teams.

2008 NCAA National Convention

This years NCAA National Convention was held in Nashville, Tennessee at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center.  There were many opportunities for student-athletes, coaches, and administrators from all Divisions to discuss issues that pertain to athletics and academics.

One of these topics pertained to the issue of hazing in athletics. The Goal of the “Hazing Prevention Summit”, as it was appropriately called, was to “prompt attention and action to prevent hazing in college athletics.” The program was moderated by Chuck Mitrano, the Commissioner of the Empire 8 Conference.  It provided resources for institutions to use in an effort to protect and preserve the dignity of all student-athletes.

There were various panelists from statisticians, lawyers, coaches, student-athletes and athletic directors.  Many ideas and thoughts were shared both at round table discussions and by the panelists. The prevention of hazing by educating our student-athletes at St. Lawrence University has been a joint effort between the Athletic Department and SAAC.  This past fall, St. Lawrence brought in a speaker to address the topic of hazing. Also, there are plans in the near future to continue the discussion on hazing and various ways to prevent it.

Saints to Celebrate "National Girls and Women

in Sports Day" on Feb. 15

St. Lawrence University will be celebrating "National Girls and Women in Sports Day" on Friday, February 15th at the Women's Basketball game versus William Smith, which begins at 6:00pm in the Burkman Gymnasium.

The University invites all female athletes, past and present, to come together in support of women's athletics. The event will include free giveaways to young Section 10 athletes.

The "National Girls and Women in Sports Day" celebration will also serve as the tip-off to

St. Lawrence's 2008 Baby Drive, which helps support the Canton Neighborhood Center. Unlike a regular canned-food drive, the University's Baby Drive calls for donations of baby diapers and formula to benefit those families in need.

We ask all families, teams, athletes and fans in attendance to bring either item to help support the cause.

A drop box will also be set up in the Student Center near the Info Desk and in Augsbury Center as well.

Mind Your Manners: Career Services to Host

Professional Etiquette Dinner

The 2008 Student-Athlete Professional Etiquette Dinner, hosted and organized by Career Services, was held on Monday, February 11th at 6:30pm in the East-Side Conference Room in Appleton Arena.

The event, which helps prepare upperclassmen with proper business skills at the dinner table, was prioritized to seniors and juniors. However, sophomores and first year students were eligible to attend the event if sign-ups allowed.

Only 25 spots were available for the event, first come, first serve.

"MAD MEN" CLAIM 2007 DODGEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Dec. 11: St. Lawrence University’s second installment of the annual Dodgeball Tournament took place Saturday December 8th at 9pm. The event was hosted by SAAC, SLU intramurals, and Residence Life. Subway was also a sponsor for the occasion through its donation of cookies for the competitors

The tournament was in the Round Robin format, as each team played all of their opponents to determine a champion. Each round consisted of a best-of-three game series.

Anyone who believed that the tourney would be taken lightly by the participants would have been severely mistaken. Each team played with great intensity and enthusiasm. Eventually, only one team was left standing, as the “Mad Men” would emerge to stake their claim as the 2007 St. Lawrence University Dodgeball Champions.

Team members for the 2007 champions included Devaun McFarland, Axel Galeano, Alan Rajapa, Chris Leon, Jonathan Edwards, Anthony Patterson and Andrew Ross.

In the final round, Team Rebert pushed the Mad Men to the limit as they won the second game to force a deciding third match. No one would leave empty handed, as all received 2007 Dodgeball T-shirts with the winners gaining the coveted Brown SLU Intramural Champion T-shirts as well.

The Mad Men will also have their names engraved on a trophy to be displayed in Augsbury Center. A special thanks goes out to all that helped to put on the event as well as the referees and participants.

SAINTS LEND A HAND AT LOCAL CHURCH

AND COMMUNITY PROGRAM

Nov. 26: The St. Lawrence University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) team representatives as well as other members of Saint teams have continued to help out with the program’s annual community service causes.

On Wednesday afternoons, St. Lawrence University student athletes volunteer their time to help the Church Community Program in Canton, NY. These athletes unload a truck of food, stock shelves, and bag groceries for good-will dinners in town and local community needs.

This project has been a staple of the University’s SAAC for several years, and serves as an enriching experience for the student athletes.

TRAVIS APGAR TALKS ABOUT

"THE HIDDEN HARMS OF HAZING"

Hazing is one of the most serious problems facing schools and colleges and the students who are joining their organizations and teams today. At least half of the students joining intercollegiate sport teams in this country experience some form of hazing as a “rite of passage” or “initiation” into the team (Alfred University, 1999). At least one college student each year has died as a result of initiation practices since 1970 (Nuwer, 1999).

Pulling form his personal and professional experience, Travis Apgar helps students recognize that human lives and well-being come first and that the actions of hazing are not only illegal and wrong, but they go against everything our groups were founded on. Whether it is a fraternity, student band, religious organization, rugby club, or intercollegiate sport team these groups were created out of a desire to enhance an individual’s life, not to hurt or destroy it.

“Hazing changed my life, more than once, never for the better. I left the first college I attended before they kicked me out. It also kept me from playing intercollegiate football at the second four-year college I attended, because I refused to subject myself to hazing anymore,” Travis said.

Travis Apgar is an associate dean of students at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. He holds masters degrees in psychology and education administration, and has worked in higher education for over a decade.

Participants were first profiled into a personality type and leadership style, then were taught how to recognize other styles and how to better interact with them.

The representatives from St. Lawrence worked in athletic conference groups ( Liberty league + NESCAC) to develop leadership/event plans to help foster a better atmosphere with in their respective teams and to help generate support and activity within their athletic and student body communities.
