THIRTY-TWO ATHLETES HONORED AT NATIONAL

STUDENT-ATHLETE DAY BANQUET

Apr. 4: The St. Lawrence University Administration and Athletic Department honored thirty-two student athletes representing their respective teams on Wednesday afternoon at the 2007 National Student Athlete Day Banquet held in Eben Holden.

Each head coach of St. Lawrence’s thirty-two teams selected an athlete from their roster who exemplifies outstanding work in the classroom, in the athletic realm, and in the community.

“You are a very unique and special group,” said Margie Strait, Director of Athletics at St. Lawrence University. “We are here to celebrate and honor your accomplishments both in the classroom and in competition, and I am proud to report that this year’s athletic teams have been outstanding across the board.”

St. Lawrence teams are enjoying one of the most successfully years in university history. Saint teams have won 13 championships this year, have had seven players win “Player of the Year” awards and five win “Rookie of the Year” honors. The Saints sport teams accumulated enough points to crack the top-25 in this year’s US Sports Academy Directors Cup rankings out of 275 Division III schools, making them the top-ranked Liberty League school in the competition. Also, 120 St. Lawrence athletes were named to All-Academic teams in the fall and winter.

SAAC MAKES ANNUAL DONATION TO CHURCH

AND COMMUNITY PROGRAM

The St. Lawrence University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) recently raised $984.00 for the local Church and Community Programs. The donation was presented to a Board member by SAAC Chair Mike Wieneke and Co-Vice Chairs, Abbie Bullard and Isaac Noyes. This money was collected and donated by St. Lawrence University student-athletes, spanning all 32 intercollegiate athletic teams. This is the 3rd year that our athletic teams have collected money for this cause.

Helping the local Church and Community programs is considered a top priority by the St. Lawrence University SAAC. Throughout the tea, Saint athletic teams volunteer their time on Wednesday afternoons, when a specific team helps to unload a truck of food, stock shelves, and bag food for good will dinners in town and local community needs. It has brought a sense fo community outreach for the teams that have been involved.

NOYES, RAMA, AND BISACCIO

TO LEAD SAAC IN 2007

Dec. 15: The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has elected its new executive committee to serve through 2007. Junior Isaac Noyes of the Men’s Nordic Ski team is the new chair of the committee, while fellow classmate Tedd Rama of the Men’s Crew team and sophomore Lyndsey Bisaccio of the Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field teams were elected Treasurer and Secretary, respectively.

Noyes steps in for senior Mike Wieneke of the Men’s Crew team, who has served as SAAC chair throughout 2006. Bisaccio takes over Secretary and Assistant Chair duties from senior Abbie Bullard of the Women’s Hockey team. Wieneke and Bullard will remain as team representatives on SAAC, and will also serve as mentors throughout the spring to the incoming committee.

Wieneke, Bullard, and Noyes, who was Treasurer on the 2006 executive committee, led SAAC with energy and creativity. The trio combined efforts to develop a new constitution that will provide structure and organization to the committee. Their efforts in the community include: Student-Athlete Day, the Senior BBQ, working with the Church and Community Program, Salvation Army Bell-Ringing, NCAA “Choices” Programming, the Saints Annual “Star Search,” The Giving Tree Donation, the Liberty League Canned Food Drive, and representing St. Lawrence at both the Liberty League and Regional SAAC/Leadership Conferences.

The committee also served as facilitators to the NCAA “Choices” Planning Committee, the St. Lawrence Leadership Conference, and the University Assessment Committee.

The St. Lawrence University Community would like to thank Mike, Abbie and Isaac for all of their efforts throughout the past year, and look forward to the new ideas and direction of the newly elected SAAC executive committee.
