WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM USES "DYNAMITE" PEFORMANCE

TO WIN SECOND ANNUAL SAINTS STAR SEARCH

Apr. 26: St. Lawrence University student-athletes competed in the Second Annual Saints Star Search last Thursday, attempting to win the Cifuentes Cup with their talents, skills, and creativity.

The event took place in the Burkman Gymnasium, as over five hundred people packed the stands to watch fellow teammates, friends, and classmates try to impress a trio of "veteran" judges. Men's soccer head coach Bob Durocher, head softball and field hockey coach Fran Grembowicz, and head football coach Chris Phelps rated the competing teams based on creativity, preparation, and talent. If the crowd or judges were unimpressed with a team's performance, the student-athletes were gonged off stage....more

SAAC INITIATIVE FOR FALL OF 2005-2006:

Throughout the fall, our athletic teams have been volunteering time at the Church & Community Programs Food Bank. Each Wednesday afternoon, a specific team is assigned to help unload a truck of food, stock shelves, and bag food for good will dinners and local community needs. The project has been a huge success and time saver for program director Shari Wilcox. It has really brought a sense of community outreach for the teams that have been involved and the schedule that is set up from week to week is working smoothly. We will be continuing our involvement with the Church and Communty programs throughout the entire year.

A couple of future projects for the Fall semester include helping the same group and organization with our annual fund drive for the Holiday Season to help with the Giving Tree Toys or Food needs within the community. In this effort, SAAC raised $900.00 in 2003 and $1250.00 in 2004. We are hoping to surpass that amount as this Holiday Season draws near. At the same time we are also going to be helping out with the Salvation Army Bell Ringers and Collection Kettles at local stores throughout the month of December.

Other News

At the beginning of the semester, before SAAC, was fully reorganized for the year, we also did a collection for Hurricane Katrina Relief. From members of the athletic department staff and athletic team members we were able to raise $3175.00 for the Red Cross.

SAAC Advisor Neil Cifuentes is the Director of our NCAA Champs Life Skills program on campus and has organized some wonderful workshops for our first and second year students on academic advising, diversity and alcohol issues. These programs have been very informative, interactive and important for the overall educational experience of our student-athletes.

Next semester, Spring of 2005:

SAAC will be participating in the recognizing of "National Girls and Women's in Sports Day" in February, "National Student Athlete Day" in April and, again, aiding in the preparation of the St. Lawrence University Athletic Awards Program at the end of the Year.

There are also plans to have the second annual "Saint Star Search" during the Spring Semester as well and we will be looking into other fund raising opportunities in conjucntion with our intramural programming.
