SAINT RIDERS 2ND IN NATIONAL SHOW; DANN WINS INDIVIDUAL CLASS TITLE

May 6: St. Lawrence University's equestrian team finished as reserve national champion in the competition for the Miller's Cup and sophomore Ashley Dann was an individual national champion at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Championships in Conyers, GA.

St. Lawrence, which last won back-to-back national championships in 1976-77, was competing for the team title for the first time since 1992 and finished second to the University of Findlay in the eight-event team competition. Findlay had 30 points to lead the 15-team field while the Saints were second with 22 followed by Centenary and the College of Charleston with 20 each. Teams received seven points for winning an event and five for second with the top six riders earning points on a declining scale.

Saint riders won two Miller's Cup individual championships and had a reserve champion in a third event. Senior Jess Niven was Miller's Cup champion in intermediate horsemanship on the flat and freshman Cate Doucette was Miller's Cup champion in walk-trot-canter competition. Both Saint riders had earlier earned zone championships in the same events. Jessica Flounders finished second in novice on the flat competition.

Niven added an eighth place finish in novice over fences, senior Alixe Schwartz was fifth in open fences competition, Kate Wagner was sixth in intermediate horsemanship over fences and Jessica Cordova was eighth in walk-trot competition.

Dann, who was the Zone II individual champion in novice horsemanship over fences, won the national individual championship in the same event as she led a field of ten riders. Dann is the fifth Saint rider to win an individual national championship in the last four years.

DANN; SAINTS RIDING TEAM ADVANCE TO NATIONALS

April 15, 2001-- Ashley Dann will go to the IHSA Nationals to compete on the individual level while the Saints team will compete at nationals for the first time since 1992. St. Lawrence was the top team among three competing for spots in the national show last weekend at the zone championships held at Cazenovia College.

The national championships will take place from May 2 through May 7 in Atlanta, Ga. Ashley Dann was the Zone II novice fences champion and will be the lone Saint competing as an individual in Atlanta. Jess Niven won the Miller's novice fences and Cate Doucette was the Miller's walk-trot-canter champion at the zone competition.

The team of Alixe Schwartz, Cate Wagner, Jessica Flounders, Jessica Cordova, Niven and Doucette will compete in the team championship at nationals.

SAINTS ADVANCE SIX RIDERS IN REGIONALS

(April 1): St. Lawrence University's equestrian team advanced six riders, covering eight events, in Intercollegiate Horse Show Association regional competition on Saturday and remains in the hunt for a strong showing at the national championships to end the season.

The Saint riders will next compete as individuals in the zone championships with the team, which currently leads the region, competing for one of the top two spots and a chance to ride for the Cartier Cup in the zone championships at Cazenovia on April 14. The top two individuals in each event will also advance from the zone show to the national championships in addition to the top two teams.

Earning spots in the zone show for the Saints were Kelly Snyder, who was regional champion in open horsemanship on the flat and reserve regional champion in novice over fences. Charissa Bergnagozzi advanced with a reserve regional championship in open horsemanship on the flat, while Chantal Brans was regional champion in intermediate on the flat. Ashley Dann will compete in both novice on the flat and novice over fences at zones after earning the regional championship in both of those events while Jessica Flounders was regional champion in walk-trot-canter equitation. Maggie Davies also advances as the third place winner in novice on the flat.

SAINTS EARN PERFECT SCORE TO CLAIM HOME HORSE SHOW

(March 24): The St. Lawrence equestrian team capped off the 2000-01 regular season in style on Saturday, by posting a perfect score of 49 points to claim first place at home. The win puts the Saints in first place in the region and qualifies the team for Zones, which will be held on April 14.

Senior Alixe Schwartz was the high point rider at the show, while sophomore Ashley Dann was reserve high point rider.

Cazenovia College placed second with 38 points, followed by Syracuse and Alfred, who tied for third place with 30 points each.

The Saints have 13 individual rides going to Regionals at Cazenovia this weekend. They are: junior Charissa Bernagozzi in Open Flat and Open Fences; junior Kelly Snyder in Open Flat and Novice Fences; senior Chantal Brans in Intermediate Flat and Fences; sophomore Ashley Dann in Novice Flat and Fences; sophomore Maggie Davies in Novice Flat; sophomore Lexi Diamond in Walk-Trot-Canter; sophomore Tyler Hotchkiss in Walk-Trot-Canter; senior Suzy Korn in Walk-Trot-Canter; and sophomore Jessica Flounders in Walk-Trot-Canter.

St. Lawrence will be competing against Skidmore and Centenery College for bids to Nationals.

LEWIS, KARKUT WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Freshman Jessica Lewis and senior Allison Karkut earned individual national championships at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championship Show in Macon, GA last week.

Lewis won the individual championship in Novice on the Flat competition while Karkut won her second national title with a victory in the Open on the Flat competition. Karkut was 1998 champion in Intermediate Horsemanship on the Flat.

Lewis also finished seventh in Novice over Fences while Missy Zlotocha was third in Novice on the Flat and Charissa Bernagozzi was fourth in Intermediate Horsemanship over Fences.

SAINTS WILL BE WELL-REPRESENTED AT NATIONALS

St. Lawrence University's riding team will have its best representation in several years at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championship show after four Saints qualified with strong performances in the Zone Show on Saturday. Alison Karkut will represent the Saints in the competition for the national high point rider after finishing as the region's top point scorer through the zone competition. She will also ride in open competition on the flat. Charissa Bernagozzi qualified for nationals in intermediate horsemanship over fences while Jessica Lewis will ride in both novice on the flat and novice over fences and Missy Zlotocha will compete in novice horsemanship on the flat.
