Athletes of the Week
April 23, 2011

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Aldous Strother, RPI.  Freshmen Aldous Strother won the Steeplechase at the East Stroudsburg University All America Meet. His time of 9:39.35 achieved ECAC and NYSCTC A standards.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Kyle Devins, Ithaca College.  Senior Kyle Devins won the Long Jump in the Cornell Upstate Challenge.  His mark of 7.43 meters was an NCAA Automatic Qualifying mark, broke the 29 year Ithaca College school record, and is currently ranked 2nd in NCAA DIII.

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Marcia McCord, Ithaca College.  Senior Marcia McCord won the 400 and placed 4th in the 200 at the Cornell Upstate Challenge.  Both times were NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Carina Luck, University of Rochester.  Sophomore Carina Luck won the Long Jump and finished 2nd in the Triple Jump at the SUNY G Open.

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Matt Marion, RIT.  Senior Matt Marion won the 400 Hurdles, and 400 at the Empire 8 Championships.  He also placed 3rd in the 110 Hurdles, and 4th in the Long Jump.  Matt was named the Empire 8 Track Athlete of the Meet.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Ja’Mar Watson, RPI.  Senior Ja’Mar Watson won the Hammer, and Discus and placed 2nd in the Shot Put at the Liberty League Championships.  Watson was named the Field Performer of the Meet in helping lead RPI men’s team to victory.

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Jacqueline Cinella, University of Rochester.  Senior Jacqueline Cinella won the 400, 200, and Sprint Medley Relay at the Brockport Golden Eagle Invitational.

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Lindsey Rappleyea, RPI.  Sophomore Lindsey Rappleyea won the Long Jump, Triple Jump, and High Jump at the Liberty League Championships.
Rappleyea was named the Field Event Performer of the Meet in helping lead the RPI women’s team to victory.

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Brian Lang, University of Rochester.  Senior Brian Lang won the 3000 meter Steeplechase at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational with an NCAA Automatic qualifying time of 8:56.76.  His time broke the University of Rochester school record, the Fauver Stadium record, is the best NCAA DIII time and the 7th fastest collegiate time so far this season.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Kyle Devins, Ithaca College.  Senior Kyle Devins won the Long Jump at the Moravian College Coach P Invitational with an NCAA Provisional qualifying
7.08 meters.

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Wendy Pavlus, St Lawrence University.  Senior Wendy Pavlus won the 3000 meter Steeplechase at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational with an NCAA Automatic qualifying time of 10:31.28.  Her time is currently #2 in NCAA DIII.

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Yaneve Fonge, University of Rochester.  Senior Yaneve Fonge won the Hammer Throw at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational with an NCAA Provisional mark of 52.47 meters.  Her mark is currently #2 in NCAA DIII.  Fonge also finished 2nd in the Shot Put with an ECAC qualifying throw of 11.89 meters.

Week ending February 20, 2011

McCord

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Ithaca senior Marcia McCord won the 400 meters in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of :58.08 at the Cornell Deneault Invitational on Saturday.  Her time is the fastest in the NYSCTC this season, and is currently ranked 17th in Division III.  She was also 3rd in the Long Jump with a season-best jump of 5.35 meters, which was an ECAC qualifier.

Fong

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Rochester senior Yaneve Fonge was a double winner at the NYU Team Challenge on Saturday night, capturing the 20-lb. Weight Throw and the Shot Put and leading Rochester to a 2nd place team finish in the 9-team competition.  Fonge hit the NCAA automatic qualifier with her toss of 18.40 meters in the Weight Throw, and also broke the NYSCTC Association record in the event.   This is the third consecutive week and the fourth time this season that Fonge has broke the Rochester school record in the Weight Throw, and she is currently ranked #2 in Division III.

Way

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Ithaca graduate student Bill Way was second in the 3,000 meters at the Deneault Invitational, hosted by Cornell University on Saturday.  His time of 8:28.01 broke an Ithaca school record that had stood since 1983, qualified him for the ECAC Championships, and is currently the top performance in the NYSCTC this season.

Watson

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Rensselaer senior Ja’Mar Watson won the 35-lb. Weight Throw (18.32 meters) and finished 6th in the Shot Put (12.94 meters) at the NYU Team Challenge at the Armory on Saturday night.  His mark in the Weight Throw was his fifth NCAA provisional mark of the season and just 3” shy of the personal best and RPI school record he set one week earlier at the Liberty League Championships.  Watson is currently ranked 11th in Division III this season in the Weight Throw.

Kinsey

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
St. Lawrence first-year Hannah Kinsey won two individual events and a relay at the Liberty League Championships on Saturday.  She claimed wins in the 55 meter dash (:07.66) and the 200 meter dash (:27.17), and also anchored the Saints to a win in the 4x200 meter relay (1:51.71).  Kinsey was named Liberty League Track Athlete of the Meet for her performance.

Fong

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Rochester senior Yaneve Fonge won the 20-lb. Weight Throw (17.28 meters, NCAA Provisional qualifier) and finished 3rd in the Shot Put (12.11 meters, ECAC qualifier) at the Robert Kane Invitational, hosted by Cornell University.  Fonge finished 1.5 meters ahead of the runner up in the Weight Throw, broke the Rochester school record for the second consecutive week, and currently has the 6th best mark in Division III this season.

Drexler

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Rensselaer junior Austin Drexler earned Liberty League Track Athlete of the Meet honors after winning three individual events, and scoring in two others to lead the Engineers to a second-place team finish at the Liberty League Championships on Saturday.  Drexler claimed wins in the 55 meter dash (:06.50, ECAC qualifier), the 200 meters (:22.70, ECAC qualifier), and the Long Jump (6.55 meters).  He also helped RPI to a runner-up finish in the 4x200 meter relay (1:34.71) and finished 5th in the High Jump (1.83 meters).

Watson

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
RPI senior Ja’Mar Watson won both throwing events at the Liberty League Championships, claiming League titles in the 35-lb. Weight Throw (18.39 meters) and the Shot Put (14.01 meters).  Watson’s mark in the Weight Throw improved his NCAA Provisional mark and broke a 35-year old RPI school record.  He was named Liberty League Field Event Athlete of the Meet, and is currently ranked #10 in Division III in the Weight Throw.

Green

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Rochester senior Casey Green won two individual events and a relay at the Hamilton College Invitational on Saturday.  She was victorious in the 55 meter dash (:07.51) and the 200 meter dash (:26.89), both in ECAC qualifying times, and also ran second leg on Rochester’s winning 4x400 meter relay (4:19.86).

Dewart

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Ithaca junior Emma Dewart was the overall winner at the Ithaca Pentathlon Meet, compiling a total score of 3,565 points.  Dewart broke her own Ithaca school record with the performance, which was also an NCAA Automatic qualifier and ranks #1 in Division III this season.  Dewart also had an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark in the Long Jump (5.64 meters) during the Pentathlon competition.

Roberts

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
At the Super Dual Saturday, hosted by St. Lawrence University, Saints junior Jarell Roberts won both the 55 meter dash (:06.65, :06.63 in prelims) and 200 meter dash (:22.88), qualifying for the ECAC Championships in both events, and was part of the winning 4x200 meter relay team (1:32.14), which also qualified for ECAC’s.  Roberts helped St. Lawrence win all three dual meets, versus Plattsburgh, Nazareth, and Oswego.

Dempsey

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
RIT senior Mike Dempsey won the Pole Vault competition in the College Division of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in NYC over the weekend.  Dempsey’s winning jump of 5.10 meters bettered the field of 31 competitors, mostly representing Division I institutions.  The mark was an NCAA Automatic qualifier and broke his own RIT school record, and is currently tied for the 2nd best performance in Division III this season.

McCord

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Ithaca senior Marcia McCord won Empire 8 Conference titles in the 55 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and the triple jump on Sunday 1/30.  Her time of :07.31 in the 55 meters was a meet record, and her mark of 11.41 meters in the triple jump was an NCAA Provisional qualifier and an Empire 8 meet record.  McCord was named the Empire 8 Track Athlete of the Meet, and helped lead Ithaca to their fourth consecutive conference title.

Dewart

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Ithaca junior Emma Dewart won the long jump (5.51 meters), high jump (1.67 meters), and 55 meter hurdles (:08.55) at the 2011 Empire 8 Championships, with NCAA Provisional qualifying performances in all 3 events.  Her mark in the long jump broke the meet record, and Dewart was named Empire 8 Field Athlete of the Meet for her efforts.

Orenstein

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Ithaca senior Max Orenstein won the 55 meter dash (:06.51) and the 4x400 meter relay (3:25.59), and was runner-up in the 200 meters (:22.62) at the Empire 8 Championships on Sunday 1/30.  All three performances were ECAC qualifiers, and Orenstein was named Empire 8 Track Athlete of the Meet.

Devins

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Ithaca senior Kyle Devins won the long jump and was second in the triple jump at the Empire 8 Championships, hosted by RIT.  His mark of 7.08 meters in the long jump was an NCAA Provisional qualifier, and he also qualified for ECAC’s in the triple jump (13.54 meters).  Devins was named the 2011 Empire 8 Field Athlete of the Meet, and helped lead Ithaca to their fourth consecutive Empire 8 team title, sharing this year’s team crown with RIT.

Pavlus

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
St. Lawrence senior Wendy Pavlus was the top collegiate finisher in the 5,000 meters at the 12-team St. Lawrence Invitational on January 22, recording an NCAA Provisional qualifying time of 17:23.08.  She currently has the 2nd fastest time in Division III this year.

McCord

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Ithaca senior Marcia McCord placed fourth in the triple jump at the Cornell Upstate Challenge with an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark of 11.29 meters.  She was also runner-up in the 400 meters, in an ECAC-qualifying time of :59.52.

Ramsey

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
St. Lawrence senior Dan Ramsey won the 1 Mile run at the St. Lawrence Invitational on January 22.  His winning time of 4:17.94 was an ECAC qualifier.

Dempsey

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
RIT senior Mike Dempsey won the pole vault at the St. Lawrence Invitational with a jump of 4.85 meters (15’11”).  Dempsey’s mark was an NCAA Provisional qualifier, and he is currently ranked 6th nationally in the event.

McCord

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Ithaca senior Marcia McCord set new school records in the 300 meters (:40.41, 1st place) and 60 meter dash (:7.77, 3rd place) at the Cornell Relays on December 4.  Her time in the 60 meters was an NCAA provisional qualifier.

Fong

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Rochester senior Yaneve Fonge won the 20-lb. Weight Throw (16.63m) and the Shot Put (12.25m) at the RIT Early Season Invitational on December 12.  Her performance in the Weight Throw broke the Rochester school record and was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, and she also qualified for ECAC’s in the Shot Put.

Drexler

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Rensselaer junior Austin Drexler won three events and was the runner up in a fourth to lead RPI to victory at the Bowdoin Quad Meet on January 15.  Drexler claimed victories in the 55 meter dash (:6.62, ECAC qualifier), the 200 meters (:23.41), and the Long Jump (6.43m).  He was also second in the High Jump (1.86m).

Watson

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
RPI senior Ja’Mar Watson won the Shot Put and the 35-lb. Weight Throw at the Bowdoin Quad Meet on January 15.  His toss of 17.68m in the Weight Throw was an NCAA provisional qualifier, and his mark of 14.42m bettered the ECAC qualifying standard in the Shot Put.
