BROOKS, BEDNAR AND DUNN EARN 9th

PLACE IN CLASSIC RELAYS

Feb. 16: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams competed in the final day of the 2008 Williams Carnival on Saturday as Prospect Mountain, with both teams participating in the 3x3 Classic Relays. The Saints’ women’s squad earned a 7th place finish, while the men’s team took 8th place.

 

St. Lawrence’s men’s team was led by the trio of sophomore Eric Wolcott, senior Isaac Noyes and junior Ben Knowles, who raced the course in a time of 28:43.2 for 12th place overall out of 20 teams. Because only one team per competing school can earn points, the Saints finished in 8th position overall.

 

The Scarlet and Brown were also represented by the team of sophomore Bryan Pepper, rookie Steven Vargo and senior Hunter Karnedy in the Men’s 3x3 Classic Relay, with the team racing in a time of 29:49.3 for 16th place overall.

 

On the women’s side, the team of senior Robin Brooks, junior Kristen Bednar and senior Kalie Dunn paced the Saints with a 9th place finish overall out of 19 teams. The trio raced in a time of 33:59.6 for 52.0 points towards the carnival standings.

 

First year students Caitlin Smith and Sophie Allen joined sophomore Johannah Ludington to complete

St. Lawrence’s second team in the Women’s 3x3 Classic Relay, finishing in 17th position with a time of 36:47.6.

 

Dartmouth College won both team titles in the event, with Susan Dunklee, Hannah Dreissigacker and Elsa Sargent winning on the women’s side (31:51.7) while Patrick O’Brien, Nils Koons and Dakota Blackhorse Von Jess won the men’s championship (27:14.4) for the Big Green.

 

Both of the St. Lawrence University Nordic ski squads will be in action again next weekend at the EISA Championships at Middlebury College on Friday and Saturday, February 22 and 23.

 

 

BEDNAR AND DUNN TIE FOR 19th PLACE IN

5K FREE AT WILLIAMS CARNIVAL

Feb. 15: St. Lawrence University junior Kristen Bednar and senior Kalie Dunn tied for 19th place overall in the Women’s 5K Free on Friday at the 2008 Williams Carnival. The duo led the Saints’ women’s Nordic ski team to a 7th place finish in the event.

 

Bednar and Dunn each raced in a time of 13:37.3 and earned 17.5 points towards the carnival. Both were also awarded 12.0 points towards an NCAA Championship berth.

 

Senior Robin Brooks completed the women’s team’s scoring with a 27th place finish, racing in a time of 14:04.2. Her points brought the team’s total to 47.0.

 

Other competitors for St. Lawrence in the Women’s 5K Free were first year student Sophie Allen (43rd, 14:55.1), sophomore Johannah Ludington (47th, 15:09.3) and rookie Caitlin Smith (52nd, 15:45.6).

 

Meanwhile, the men’s Nordic ski team totaled 38.0 points in the 10K Free, earning 8th place overall. Leading the way for the Saints were junior Ben Knowles and Isaac Noyes, who finished in 25th and 26th place, respectively. Knowles raced in a time of 24:32.3 and was awarded 15.0 points, while Noyes was one spot back and earned 14.0 points for his time of 24:43.0.

 

Sophomore Eric Wolcott rounded out the Saints’ scoring in 33rd place, as the Concord, NH native picked up 9.0 points with a time of 24:52.8.

 

Senior Hunter Karnedy (36th, 25:00.7), first year student Steven Vargo (50th, 25:38.3) and sophomore Bryan Pepper (55th, 26:26.0) also competed in the Men’s 10K Free for St. Lawrence.

 

Dartmouth College was victorious in the Women’s 5K Free with a total of 92.0 points, ten ahead of second place UNH. The Big Green also logged the individual champion in the event, as Susan Dunklee won with a time of 12:44.5. Colby College won the Men’s 10K Free with 89.0 points, while Bates’ Sylvan Ellefson took the individual crown behind a time of 23:19.2.

 

Both the men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams will be in action again on Saturday, February 16 at the Williams Carnival, as the teams compete in the Classic Sprint Relays.
