WOLCOTT’S CAREER-BEST FINISH LEADS

SAINTS IN 10K CLASSIC AT BATES CARNIVAL

Jan. 12: St. Lawrence University sophomore Eric Wolcott posted a career-best 14th place finish in the men’s 10K Classic at the Bates Carnival on Saturday morning, pacing the Saints’ men’s squad to a 6th place finish in the event. Meanwhile, fellow classmate Kristen Bednar led the women’s team for the second straight race, finishing in 22nd place overall with a time of 35:13.2 in the 10K Classic.

 

Wolcott, who is coming off another successful season with the Saints’ men’s soccer team, picked up 23.0 points for the carnival and 18.0 points towards the NCAA Championships with a time of 27:13.4. Bednar picked up 17.0 points for her team, which finished in 7th place, and 9.0 points towards NCAA’s.

 

Junior Ben Knowles (21st, 27:34.8) and senior Hunter Karnedy (32nd, 28:09.4) also scored on the men’s side, bringing the team’s point total to 49.0. Senior Isaac Noyes (39th, 28:22.0) and junior Matt McClelland (44th, 28:43.2) were next for the Scarlet and Brown, followed by first year student Steven Vargo, who raced in a time of 29:12.8 for a 54th place finish.

 

Rounding out the Saints’ line-up were sophomore Bryan Pepper (61st, 29:48.3), senior Tyler Ludington (73rd, 30:58.4) and sophomore Jacob Birchard (93rd, 36:03.1).

 

On the women’s side, senior Kalie Dunn was the second finisher for St. Lawrence, picking up 14.0 points towards the carnival with a 26th place showing (35:20.0). Completing the team’s scoring was senior Robin Brooks, who earned 13.0 points for her 30th place finish (35:26.7).

 

Sophomore Johannah Ludington (35th, 36:02.9) narrowly missed out of her team’s top-three scorers, and she was followed by rookie Elizabeth Hayden, who logged a 61st place finish with a time of 38:23.8.

 

Also competing for the St. Lawrence women’s Nordic ski team in the 10K classic race on Saturday were first year student Sophie Allen (68th, 39:05.8), junior Marissa Marleau (72nd, 40:56.1) and rookies Caitlin Smith (74th, 41:36.4) and Arla Casselman (84th, 43:35.7).

 

The men’s 10K classic was won by Juergen Uhl from the University of Vermont in a time of 25:31, with the team title going to Dartmouth with a total of 85.0 points. On the women’s side, Alexa Turzian of Middlebury won the individual crown with a time of 31:50.9, with the Big Green again winning the team title with 93.0 points.

 

Both of the St. Lawrence University Nordic ski teams will be in action again next weekend, January 18 and 19, when the Saints play host to the 2008 St. Lawrence University Carnival in Wilmington, NY.

 

 

BEDNAR AND KNOWLES PACE SAINTS IN

2008 CARNIVAL SEASON OPENER

Jan. 11: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams kicked-off the 2008 carnival season on Friday, as the teams competed at the Bates Carnival at Black Mountain. Juniors Kristen Bednar and Ben Knowles were the top finishers for the Scarlet and Brown, as Bednar took 20th place in the women’s 5K Free while Knowles finished 25th in the men’s 10K Free.

 

Bednar’s time of 14:03.6 earned the Essex Junction, VT native 21.0 points for the Saints, as the women finished in 7th place out of 11 teams. Seniors Kalie Dunn and Robin Brooks also scored for St. Lawrence on Friday, as Dunn earned 15.0 points for her 27th place finish (14:18.0) while Brooks added 12.0 points for her 31st place showing (14:22.4).

 

First year student Elizabeth Hayden was the top rookie on the women’s side, as she raced in a time of 15:05.3 for 52nd place out of 93 competitors. Also competing for the women’s team were sophomore Johannah Ludington (55th, 15:11.9), first year students Sophie Allen (63rd, 15:25.1) and Hannah James (64th, 15:25.8), junior Marissa Marleau (74th, 16:01.3) as well as rookies Caitlin Smith (78th, 16:16.0) and Arla Casselman (85th, 17:02.0).

 

Meanwhile, Knowles 25th place finish in a time of 24:10.8 earned him 14.0 points individually. Seniors Hunter Karnedy (35th, 24:28.8) and Isaac Noyes (38th, 24:33.1) also scored for the Saints, bringing the team’s total to 32.0 points and 9th place out of 11 teams.

 

Sophomore Eric Wolcott (45th, 24:43.5) and first year student Steven Vargo (57th, 25:05.5) narrowly missed out on scoring for St. Lawrence in the opening race of the carnival season, which included 94 competitors.

 

Rounding out the Saints’ line-up on Friday were junior Matt McClelland (62nd, 25:23.6), sophomore Bryan Pepper (65th, 25:32.3), rookie Kyle Marvinney (76th, 26:31.3), senior Tyler Ludington (85th, 27:17.9) and sophomore Jacob Birchard (93rd, 29:42.6).

 

“We definitely struggled out there today, but we’re not going to get down on ourselves,” said Saints head coach Ethan Townsend. “Though we’re disappointed by our results today, we certainly intend on improving tomorrow on Day Two in the 10K Classic.”

 

Both the men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams will race in the 10K classic tomorrow, Saturday, January 12 at Black Mountain. The event will begin at 9:00am.
