Apr. 3: St. Lawrence University senior Tom Lepesqueur, juniors Isaac Noyes and Robin Brooks, and sophomore Kristen Bednar have been named National All-Academic Award recipients for 2007 by EISA Skiing. Lepesqueur had a solid season as the men’s Nordic ski team’s lone senior, posting four top-15 finishes throughout the year. The Canterbury, NH native finished in 11th place in the 10K Free at the UNH Carnival, then followed with a 14th place finish in the 20K Classic at UVM. Lepesqueur then posted a pair of 9th place finishes in the 20K Classic at Dartmouth and the 10K Free at the EISA Championships. Noyes was outstanding for the men’s Nordic squad this season, posting three top-10 finishes, including an 8 th place finish in the 10K Free at UNH and 10 th place showings in the 20K Classic at UVM and the 10K Free at Williams. The Hyde Park, VT native, who just barely missed the cut for the NCAA Championships, also joined Lepesqueur on the podium for the Saints third place finish in the 3x10 Free Relay at Dartmouth. Noyes is majoring in Biology.

Brooks joined the women's Nordic ski team at the start of the spring semester after spending the fall of her junior year studying abroad in Kenya. The Seattle, WA native competed in four individual races and two relays for the Saints, including a 15th place showing in the Women's 3x5 Free Relay at Dartmouth.

Bednar was the most consistent figure on the women’s Nordic ski team this season, becoming one of the region’s most reliable skiers as a sophomore. The Economics major had three ninth place finishes this season, including the 10K Classic at UNH, the 15K Classic at Dartmouth, and the 5K Free at the EISA Championships at Middlebury. For her fantastic season, Bednar earned a spot in the NCAA Championship field and finished 35th in the 5K Free and 33rd in the 15K Classic.

“We are obviously very proud of Tom, Isaac, Robin, and Kristen for their efforts both on our team but also in their academic work,” said Saints head coach Ethan Townsend. “These awards reflect their passion for

She really went for it early and I give her a lot of credit.”

The Women’s 5K Free was dominated by Northern Michigan University, as Lindsey Williams (13:50.4), Morgan Smyth (14:06.6), and Lindsey Weier (14:08.3) landed the top-three spots, respectively.

Bednar had a very consistent season, helping her earn her first NCAA Championship bid. She posted the fastest time for the Saints women’s team in six different races throughout the season. The junior then followed with an impressive 7th place finish in the 5K Free at the EISA Championships at Middlebury to solidify her spot in the field.

BEDNAR AND DUNN EARN 2007

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP BIDS

Feb. 28: The St. Lawrence University women's Nordic ski team has qualified two members to compete in the 2007 NCAA Championships next weekend at the Jackson Ski Touring Center in Jackson, NH. Sophomore Kristen Bednar and junior Kalie Dunn will represent the Saints at the National Championships after outstanding 2007 campaigns.

Bednar has been a consistent figure on the top of the St. Lawrence finishers this season, leading the team six times throughout the season. The Essex Junction, VT native posted three ninth place finishes this season to secure her first collegiate NCAA bid.

Though Dunn entered the final two weeks of the Carnival season outside of NCAA contention, the Yarmouth, ME native launched herself into the mix with a top-10 finish at the Williams Carnival. Knowing she would need seventh place finish or better at the season-ending EISA Championships at Middlebury, Dunn responded with a 7th place showing, her best finish of a the season, to lock up her first career bid to the NCAA Championships.

"What Kristen and Kalie have accomplished this season went far beyond expectations," said Saints head coach Ethan Townsend. "Kristen has been incredible this season, and Kalie had one of the most exciting finishes in the country. Both should be very proud of what they've accomplished."

Bednar and Dunn will compete at the NCAA Championships hosted by the University of New Hampshire March 6th through the 10th.

SAINTS HAVE THREE TOP-10 FINISHES

TO OPEN EISA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Feb. 23: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams got off to an outstanding start at the 2007 EISA Championships at Middlebury on Friday, as the men finished in 2nd place overall in the 10K Free, while the women earned 4th place in the 5K Free. Also, for his efforts and dedication this season,

St. Lawrence head coach Ethan Townsend was voted the “2007 EISA Coach of the Year” by his peers.

The men’s team’s second place finish is their best showing of the season, as five skiers finished in the top-25 for the Scarlet and Brown. Leading the way was senior Tom Lepesqueur, who is on the bubble to earn a bid the NCAA Championships. Lepesqueur raced the 10K Free in 25:50.2, earning 9th place overall.

Junior Hunter Karnedy, who was the team’s lone representative at NCAA’s last season, came on strong with a season-best 11th place finish behind a time of 26:09.1. Only 2.6 seconds behind in 12th place was first year student Zachary Wetherell. The Dalton, MA native completed the team’s scoring of 103.0 points, nine points ahead of Vermont .

Junior Isaac Noyes was left out of the scoring for the first time all season, though he still had a solid showing on Friday, earning 17th place with a time of 26:23.2. Rookie Eric Wolcott notched his best collegiate finish to date to show the team's depth, racing in a time of 26:46.5 and earning 25th place overall.

Rounding out the Saints men’s team in the 10K Free at Middlebury was first year student Bryan Pepper, who raced in a time of 30:22.5 for 58th position overall.

The women’s Nordic team was not without their share of top-finishers as well on Friday, as junior Kalie Dunn and sophomore Kristen Bednar each took one step closer to nailing down an NCAA Championship bid.

Dunn, who finished in 8th place in the 5K Free last weekend at the Williams Carnival, showed her finish was no fluke, earning a tie for 7th place on Friday. Her time of 14:23.3 matched that of Hannah Dreissigacker of Dartmouth College , earning Dunn 35.5 points for the EISA Championships.

Meanwhile, Bednar couldn’t have been closer, finishing a mere .1 second behind her teammate and Dreissigacker in 9th place with a time of 14:23.4. Her 34.0 points were joined with fellow classmate’s Marissa Marleau’s, as Marleau completed the Saints scoring with a 43rd place finish (16:15.0). The trio earned 4th place overall with a total of 85.5 points.

Also competing on the women’s side on Friday were junior Robin Brooks (47th, 16:22.2) and first year student Laura Sisco (54th, 18:10.1).

Townsend’s “Coach of the Year” honor is well deserved, as he has put together a team that consistently challenges the best skiers the northeast has to offer. Townsend shared the award with Tracey Cote of Colby College. With a strong finish at the EISA Championships tomorrow, St. Lawrence could have as many as three student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Championships.

The Saints men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams will be in action again tomorrow, Saturday, February 24th in the 20K and 15K Classic races to determine the final slots for the NCAA bids.

SAINTS LOOK FOR STRONG PUSH TO

EARN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP BIDS

Feb. 21: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams will head to Breadloaf, VT this weekend to compete in the EISA Championships hosted by Middlebury College. The Saints have several skiers who hope to use the Middlebury Carnival as a last push, and earn their way into the NCAA Championships.

Junior Isaac Noyes is currently in 10th place of 11 qualifying spots, giving the Hyde Park, VT native the most leeway of the St. Lawrence skiers. Noyes has notched four top-10 finishes this season, putting him in solid position to earn a spot at Nationals. However, several talented competitors, such as Bates’ Brandon Cooper, Colby’s Nick Kline, and New Hampshire’s Rody Lageson are all within striking distance to challenge for an NCAA slot.

Noyes is not the lone St. Lawrence male trying to land in the National Championship field, though, as first year Zachary Wetherell and senior Tom Lepesqueur are also in contention heading into this weekend’s events. Wetherell, who is currently 12th in the rankings, will need a top-9 finish or better in the Freestyle event to get in. Lepesqeuer is close behind Wetherell, and will need either a 6th place finish in the Free or a 9th place in the Classic in order to bump Chris Ziegler of UVM.

“This weekend offers a great opportunity for Isaac, Zach, and Tom to earn a spot at Nationals,” said Saints head coach Ethan Townsend. “They’ve all had great years, and they’re all looking to extend their seasons at the EISA Championships.”

On the women’s side, sophomore Kristen Bednar currently stands in the NCAA Championship field behind a pair of top-10 finishes this season. In order to move up the standings this weekend, she will need either a 7th place showing in the Classic race or a 5th place finish in the Freestyle. However, the Essex Junction, VT native is right on the bubble, and will be chased by New Hampshire’s Sarah Wright and Kathleen Maynard of Colby.

After an outstanding showing in the Freestyle event at the Williams Carnival, junior Kalie Dunn is also still alive in the NCAA Championship hunt. She will need a 7 th place showing this weekend in order to leap into the top-10. If Dunn is able to accomplish this, however, she may knock Bednar from the standings.

“The women’s team has exceeded my expectations all season, and they have the chance to continue do so this weekend,” added Coach Townsend. “Both teams are certainly performing up to their capabilities, and if everything goes well, we will be represented at the National Championships.”

The 2007 National Championships will be hosted by the University of New Hampshire from March 6 th through the 10th.

Completing the scoring for St. Lawrence was sophomore Marissa Marleau, who raced in a time of 58:54.1. Dunn, Bednar, and Marleau combined for 37.0 total points, landing them in 8th place.

Rounding out the line-up for the Saints in the Women’s 15K Classic was rookie Laura Sisco, who raced in time of 1:06:13.1 (51st).

Both the men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams will be in action again tomorrow, Saturday, February 3rd in the 3x5 Freestyle Relay at the UVM Carnival.

FOUR SAINTS POST CAREER-BEST

FINISHES AT UNH CARNIVAL

Jan. 26: Four St. Lawrence University Nordic skiers recorded career best finishes on Friday in the Freestyle races at the UNH Carnival in Jackson, NH. Junior Isaac Noyes, who posted his career best finish last weekend at the St. Michael’s Carnival in 15th place, improved yet again with an 8th place showing in the 10K Free at the UNH Carnival. Teammates senior Tom Lepesqueur and first year student Zach Wetherell along with sophomore Kristen Bednar on the women’s side each also posted career best showings.

Noyes’ top-10 showing is the first for the Saints since junior Hunter Karnedy finished in third place last year at the Colby Carnival. His 29.0 points came thanks to a time of 24:52.0. Lepesqueur was only three spots behind Noyes in 11th place overall, which is the senior’s best collegiate finish. The Canterbury, NH native raced in a time of 25:03.6, collecting 27.0 points for the Scarlet and Brown.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came from St. Lawrence rookie Zach Wetherell, though, who finished in 41st place last weekend in the 10K Free at the St. Michael’s Carnival just last weekend. On Friday, the Dalton, MA native was very sharp, working his way into a 15th place finish with a time of 25:13.6, earning 24.0 points and bringing the team total to 80.0, placing the Saints in 3rd place ahead of several impressive schools including Bates, Middlebury, Williams, Bowdoin, and New Hampshire.

Karnedy was the next Saint finisher in 22nd place with a time of 25:33.5, earning 9.0 individual points towards the NCAA Championships. He was followed by first year students Eric Wolcott (42nd, 26:24.9) and Bryan Pepper (66th, 27:29.3). Finally, sophomore Matt McClelland (75th, 28:13.0) and junior Tyler Ludington (91st, 30:15.9) rounded out the Saints line-up on Friday in the 10K Free.

Meanwhile, the trio of Bednar, junior Kalie Dunn and sophomore Marissa Marleau once again combined to lead the Saints women’s Nordic team in the 5K Free. Bednar’s time of 20:11.4 earned the Essex Junction, VT native 11th place overall, a new career best, and gave the Scarlet and Brown 27.0 points.

Dunn and Marleau, who scored for the Saints last weekend at the St. Michael’s Carnival, again came through with solid performances. Dunn raced in a time of 21:13.9 (20.0 points) to finish in 24th place overall, while Marleau completed the team’s scoring with 16.0 points in 35th place (21:37.4). The total of 63.0 points placed the Saints in 5th place overall in the event, only five points behind New Hampshire.

Rookie Johannah Ludington was the next Saint finisher in 63rd place with a time of 23:27.9, nine spots ahead of fellow classmate Laura Sisco in 72nd place (24:33.9). Also competing for the women’s team in the 5K Free were newcomer junior Ann Seyse (78th, 26:58.0) and sophomore Valerie Malia (80th, 27:45.6).

The Saints will be in action again tomorrow in the 10K Classic on Day 2 of the UNH Carnival.

SAINTS HAVE STRONG SHOWING

IN 3X3 SPRINT RELAYS

Jan. 20: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams, who opened up their 2007 carnival season at St. Michael’s with the freestyle races on Friday, each had solid outings in the 3x3 Sprint Relays on Saturday at the Sleepy Hollow Cross Country Center in Huntington, VT.

Both teams improved on their showings from Friday, as the men’s trio of juniors Hunter Karnedy and Isaac Noyes and senior Tom Lepesqueur raced in a time of 27:54.1, earning 58.0 points for the Saints and clinching sixth place overall. However, because only one trio can score per team, the Karnedy, Noyes, and Lepesqueur took home fifth place honors.

Their teammates, first year students Eric Wolcott and Zach Wetherell and sophomore Matt McClelland, were not far behind, though, as the team’s second trio came in with a time of 28:06.9. Their time was good enough for seventh place overall, right behind the Saints top-showing group.

The men’s Nordic squad also entered an open team which included first year students Bryan Pepper and Gerhard Schulte along with junior Tyler Ludington. The threesome finished with a time of 30:36.7, finishing in 22nd position overall.

On the women’s side, it was the team of sophomores Kristen Bednar and Marissa Marleau and junior Kalie Dunn that scored for the Saints in the 3x3 Sprint Relay. The trio finished in 10th place overall with a time of 34:03.1, putting them in sixth place in the meet. The Scarlet and Brown also entered a non-scoring open team, which included first year student Laura Sisco and sophomore Valerie Malia.

“I thought we really skied well today, and we can take a lot of positives away from the first carnival of the season,” said Saints head coach Ethan Townsend.

The Saints will participate in the UNH Carnival next week, January 26th and 27th in Jackson, NH. The men’s events include the 10K Freestyle and 20K Classic, while the women will ski the 5K Free and the 15K Classic.

NOYES, KARNEDY, AND BEDNAR PACE SAINTS

AT OPENING CARNIVAL OF 2007

Jan. 19: The 2007 EISA carnival season got underway on Friday afternoon, as the St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams competed at the St. Michael’s Carnival in Huntington, VT. Junior Isaac Noyes was the Saints top finisher with a career-best 15th place finish in the 10K Free, a mere tenth of a second ahead of fellow classmate Hunter Karnedy (16th place).

On the women’s side, sophomore Kristen Bednar, fresh off of a solid season with the St. Lawrence women’s soccer team, posted the second best finish of her career with a time of 16:57.9 in the 5K Free. Her time earned her 18th place overall and 13 points towards the NCAA Tournament.

Noyes and Karnedy led the men’s team to a sixth place finish in the opening event. Their times of 29:17.7 and 29:17.8 earned the team a total of 49.0 points. Senior Tom Lepesqueur rounded out the Saints’ scoring with a time of 30:04.9 (31st place), earning 14.0 points.

The men’s team brought five underclassmen, including four first year students, in hopes of gaining collegiate race experience for the future. First year student Zach Wetherell finished in 41st position with a time of 30:36.6, four spots ahead of fellow rookie Eric Wolcott in 45th place (30:43.6). Sophomore Matt McClelland (74th, 32:35.2) was next, 1.1 seconds ahead of rookie Bryan Pepper (75th, 32:36.3).

Junior Tyler Ludington (81st, 33:03.5) and first year student Gerhard Schulte (83rd, 33:15.5) completed the Saints line-up in the 10K Free.

Bednar’s 18th place finish earned the sophomore from Essex Junction, VT 23.0 points towards the competition. She was followed by junior Kalie Dunn, who raced in a time of 17:41.2 for 16.0 points. Completing the team’s scoring on Friday was sophomore Marissa Marleau, who netted 13.0 points with a time of 18:02.2 (51st place). The trio combined for 52.0 points, placing the Saints in eighth place overall.

Rounding out the Scarlet and Brown’s roster in the 5K Free were first year student Johannah Ludington (64th, 18:36.6) and Laura Sisco (66th, 19:28.0) and sophomore Valerie Malia (77th, 22:35.1).

Both the men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams will compete tomorrow, Saturday, January 20th at the

ST. MICHAEL'S CARNIVAL SET TO

KICK OFF AT SLEEPY HOLLOW

Jan. 18: The St. Lawrence University men's and women's Nordic ski teams are prepared to kick off the 2007 carnival season this weekend at the St. Michael's Carnival in Huntington, VT.

The event is scheduled to go on as planned at Sleepy Hollow in Huntington, though warm temperatures and lack of snow last week threatened to move the event to the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT. Though tournament officials believe the event will indeed take place at Sleepy Hollow, the Trapp Lodge is still the back-up site.

Tournament updates and scores will be posted here throughout the weekend.

SAINTS KICK OFF NORDIC SEASON IN IMPRESSIVE

FASHION AT US NATIONALS

Jan. 9: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams began their 2007 season at the US Nationals in Houghton, MI last weekend. Several Saints looked sharp in the season opener, including junior Hunter Karnedy and sophomore Kristen Bednar.

Though skiers were forced to handle difficult conditions due to warm temperatures and a lack of snow, it was still an outstanding experience for many athletes on the St. Lawrence team to gain heading into the carnival season.

The opening race of the season for the women was the 5 Km Classic on January 3rd, which was won by Lindsey Weier of the US Ski Team with a time of 14:51. The two Saints that participated in the race, Bednar and fellow classmate Marissa Marleau, each posted solid finishes. Bednar finished in 78th place overall with a time of 17:09, good enough for 14th position amongst Eastern Collegiate skiers. Marleau finished with a time of 17:21, 18th amongst Eastern Collegiate skiers and in 94th place out of 174 racers.

The Saints men’s team began their season with the 10 Km Classic on the same day, which was won by Kris Freeman of the US Ski Team with a time of 25:07. Karnedy had an outstanding run in his opening race of 2007, though, finishing 58 th overall with a time of 29:18. His finish was third amongst Eastern College skiers competing.

Junior Isaac Noyes also had a solid day, finishing with a time of 30:56 and earning 101st place (13th Eastern College skier), while first year student Bryan Pepper was the team’s third finisher in 136th place (17th Eastern Collegiate Skier overall). Sophomore Matt McClelland (180th of 248) and first year student Gerhard Schulte (195th of 248) also competed in the classic race.

The following day included the Freestyle races for both teams, with the women’s team competing in the 10 Km Free while the men raced in the 15 Km Free. However, record-breaking temperatures had the course in rough condition, and it would only deteriorate further as the day progressed.

The women’s team had the slight advantage as they skied in the morning. Bednar again turned in the team’s top performance of the day, finishing in 91st place overall out of 171 skiers thanks to a time of 33:43.

The men started later in the afternoon in soft, slushy conditions.  Kris Freeman of the US Ski Team won the 15 Km race with a fantastic time of 39:34. Karnedy again led St. Lawrence behind a time of 45:13, good for 74th place. Noyes turned in his best performance to date with a 94th place finish. However, the Hyde Park, VT native’s race was most impressive because he was one of the last skiers to begin the race, but he worked his way through the crowd and finished only 42 seconds behind Karnedy.

First year student Zach Wetherell was next for the Scarlet and Brown in 122nd place, followed by McClelland (191st), Schulte (195th), and Pepper (231st).

After traveling to Calumet, MI to train on the Swedetown ski trails where there was better snow, the Saints were in action on the final day of competition on Saturday, January 6th and conditions were again difficult due to the lack of snow.

McClelland was the top finisher on the men’s side in the classic sprint with a 103rd place finish. Noyes was next in 107th place, followed by Wetherell (110th) and Schulte (169th). Finally, an unfortunate fall cost Pepper, as his finish slipped to 185th overall out of 210 skiers.

On the women’s side, it was again Marleau and Bednar leading the Saints, though Marleau bested her teammate by about one second in the classic sprint. Marleau finished in 102nd position while Bednar closed in 105th overall.

Though the Saints were competing officially for the first time this season, their efforts proved to be amongst the best in the collegiate ranks. The Saints finished 13th of 27 colleges in the College Cup, a competition amongst all of the college teams that were competing at the US Nationals. However, the Scarlet and Brown were third amongst Division III teams and finished third amongst EISA schools.

The athletes that competed at the US Nationals will hope to use their experience and momentum as the carnival season gets underway on January 19th and 20th at the St. Michael’s carnival in Sleepy Hollow, VT.

SAINTS NORDIC SKI TEAMS PREPARING

FOR EXCITING 2007 SEASON

Oct. 19: With the fall foliage in St. Lawrence County just about at full peak, the St. Lawrence University Nordic Ski Team has begun preparing for their upcoming 2007 season. Both the men’s and women’s Nordic teams have recently completed two weeks of intense time trials and testing, giving head coach Ethan Townsend a chance to evaluate his team’s strengths and weaknesses.

The women’s squad will be a young team this year, as they will compete without any seniors on the roster. The Saints will also be without a duo of talented competitors this fall as juniors Robin Brooks and Kalie Dunn are studying abroad in Kenya for the fall semester, though they will return for the competitive season. The Scarlet and Brown will return three key sophomores include Jackie Karboski, Marissa Marleau, and Kristen Bednar, who all had fantastic rookie campaigns last year.

Karboski, Marleau, and Bednar all scored for the team last year, with Karboski and Bednar both posting one top-15 finish. Bednar will be coming off an impressive soccer season for the Saints, as she recently scored the winning overtime goal in Saints win over Nazareth College . Karboski and Marleau won the St. Regis Time Trial last weekend in just under 41:30 minutes, which should give them some confidence heading into the season.

“Despite having a relatively small, young group, the mood is very optimistic and it doesn't seem to affect our training,” said Coach Townsend.  “Both the men’s and women’s teams train together, so they always support each other as one team.”

Freshman Johanna Luddington has been one of the top runners this fall on the cross country team, so she should add some athleticism and endurance to the Nordic ski team this winter. Sophomore Val Malia and first year student Laura Sisco will also be trying to earn a spot come the carnival season.

The men’s team will be led by their lone senior, Tom Lepesqueur, who has been selected the team captain for the 2007 campaign. The Canterbury , NH native is coming off an excellent junior year and a quality summer training, so the Saints hope to see him improve on his top-20 performances from a year ago.

“Tom has his sights set on NCAA qualification and is coming off his most productive summer yet for training,” said Coach Townsend.  “He has always had the motor and determination to be top competitor but just lacked race experience and skill on skis, which has developed tremendously over the past three years.”

Lepesqueur will be joined by junior Hunter Karnedy, who was the Nordic team’s solo participant in the NCAA Championships last season. Karnedy ran with the Saints track team last spring, and posted the fasted time in the 3 KM time trail this fall. Other returnees on the men’s side include junior Isaac Noyes, who is coming off a fantastic summer of training and is looking great in fall testing, and sophomore Matt McClelland, who spent part of his summer hiking in the mountains of Europe . Newcomer Zach Wetherell, former Massachusetts State Champion and Burke Mountain Academy graduate, should contribute to the carnival squad as well.

Top New York high school skiers last year, Gerhard Shulte and Bryan Pepper, along with junior cross country runner Tyler Luddington may also add to the mix. The wild card of the season may be sophomore Ben Knowles, who was an All-American at the 2005 Junior Olympics, but had to sit out last season due to a back injury. If he can return to top form, the Saints could be one of the surprise teams throughout the 2007 season.

I am really excited about the possibilities for our men’s team to break into the top three in team scoring,” added Coach Townsend. “Right now I feel like we are deeper than we have been at anytime over the past twelve years.  I believe we have six skiers that could impact our team score, and those not at that level right now are still working hard to perhaps surprise us.”

The Saints are gearing up for a Thanksgiving trip to Quebec this fall to get in some quality on-snow training. The regular season begins with the US Nationals in Michigan during the first week of January 2007.
