SAINTS LOADED WITH TALENT IN 2006

Oct. 19: Head coach Ethan Townsend hopes to build upon the success of the 2005 season with a new crop of young, talented skiers. Although the team lost several key athletes through graduation and study abroad, the arrival of some of New England and New York’s best high school racers should help fill in the holes.

The 2005 Rookie of the Year skier Kalie Dunn scored for the team in four individual races, and is joined by fellow sophomores MacKenzie MacHarg and Robin Brooks who both took turns scoring for the team as freshmen. In addition to these returning skiers, several top recruits should add to the team.

  • Kristen Bednar, from Essex, Vt. was a top Vermont high school racer last winter. She was an alternate for the New England Junior Olympic Team last winter. This fall she has been on the St. Lawrence women’s soccer team, and is a starting midfielder.
  • Jackie Karboski from Camden, N.Y. competed in the 2004 and 2005 Junior Olympics. She is one of the top high school skiers coming out of New York, and is also the top 400-hurdles recruit for the SLU track team.
  • Marissa Marleau is from Old Forge, N.Y. and competed for the Polar Bear Ski Club. Marleau had several outstanding results last winter at Junior Olympics, and spent most of her high school races competing against Jackie Karboski for first place.
  • Valerie Malia from Tilson, N.Y. will also be trying out for the team.

The men’s side will be a mix of old and new skiers. Senior Matt Barton will provide leadership for this up-and-coming group of athletes. While the 2005 men’s team surprised more than a few EISA coaches and athletes, the 2006 squad will prove that 2005 was no fluke.

Barton will be joined by fellow seniors Michael Hart, Kevin Hart, and Kevin Emblidge. Barton and Mike Hart were regulars on the travel squad in 2005, and each had a few top-30 finishes. Junior Tommy Lepesqueur was one of the most improved skiers in 2005. His rookie season best finish was a 38 th place finish at Dartmouth, but last winter he had several top-20 finishes. MVP and Rookie of the Year skier Hunter Karnedy will be ready to hit the trails when the snow flies. He was one of the top freshmen and top skiers on the circuit in 2005, and 2006 should bring more of the same. Sophomore Issac Noyes is in great shape and will round out the squad of returning skiers.

In addition to these outstanding upperclassmen are several promising recruits:

  • Ben Hickory from Morrisville, Vt. was an All-American at the 2005 Junior Olympics (3 rd place finish in the sprint, lead leg of the winning relay team), and a top-3 skier at the 2005 Eastern High School Championships (he won the sprint at this event).
  • Ben Knowles from Yarmouth, Maine was also an All-American at the 2005 Junior Olympics, skiing the anchor leg of the winning OJ relay team (he was on the same team as now-SLU teammate Ben Hickory). Knowles had a strong finish in the classic race as well.
  • Matt McClelland from Keene Valley is one of the top high school skiers coming out of New York. He has been on several Mid-Atlantic Junior Olympic teams and raced for the NYSEF program in Lake Placid. Some of his best results of the season were at the 2005 Eastern High School Championships, where he had top-15 finishes in all his races.

The competition season begins in early January as Head Coach Ethan Townsend and Assistant Coach Jenny Townsend take three men and three women to compete in the 2006 Senior Nationals at Soldier Hollow, the 2002 Winter Olympic venue in Utah. Erin Mallory, Kalie Dunn, Jackie Karbowski, Hunter Karnedy, Ben Hickory, and Ben Knowles will all be on this trip. After the Utah races, the Alpine and Nordic teams will meet up in Maine at Sugarloaf for a Saints training camp prior to the collegiate season. EISA league competition heats up later in January with the Colby Carnival and St. Lawrence’s home carnival in Lake Placid. In February the team will compete at the Vermont Carnival, Dartmouth Carnival, and Williams Carnival, before culminating with the EISA Championships hosted by Middlebury. In March, qualified skiers will compete at the NCAA Championships hosted by the University of Colorado. Races will be held in Steamboat Springs.
