SAINTS RETURN STRONG

Sept. 10: The Nordic Team returns key talent and welcomes a number of promising first-year students. On the women's side, captain Meghan Burns '05 is joined by fellow seniors Becca Barron and Tora Olafsen. Meghan and Tora both posted outstanding top-15 results last year and Becca was a solid, consistent performer after spending a semester abroad in Norway. Tora is off to a great start this fall as the Saints number one cross country runner. The seniors are joined by returning skiers Lia Prysunka '07, (women's team Rookie of the Year last winter) and additional sophomores Amy Laverack and Callie Douglass. Kalie Dunn is one of four promising first-year skiers trying out for the team. Kalie had top-5 results in all the Eastern High School Championship races last March. Mackenzie MacHarg and Nora Talkington were both top Vermont high school racers and Robin Brooks represented the Pacific Northwest at the 2003 Junior Olympics and hails from Seattle, WA. We will miss junior Erin Mallory as she spends the winter semester abroad in Austria. The women typically finished 5th, 6th, or 7th last winter, but they hope to improve upon these results and grab a spot or two for the NCAA Championships in Stowe, VT this March.

The men's team is the strongest it has been in six years, and is lead by number one skier and captain Angus McCusker '05. Angus was the only Saint to qualify for the NCAA's in 2004 and his best race included a podium 3rd place finish in the freestyle event at Dartmouth. Angus also earned second team All-East recognition. Additional top seniors include Tyler Magnan and Noah Noyes who are both especially strong in the freestyle technique, with several top-30 finishes between them. The seniors are joined by returning juniors Mike Hart, Matt Barton, Kevin Hart, and Kevin Emblidge. The two Harts and Barton represented Mid-Atlantic at the Junior Olympics last March in Lake Placid. Mike is one of the Saints' most consistent skiers with top-30 finishes in both freestyle and classic races, while Matt's top finish last winter was a 22nd at Dartmouth. Kevin Hart is a sprint and mass start specialist, and had one of his top races at US Nationals last January where he scored a 34th place finish overall in the sprint race against the top skiers in the country. Kevin Emblidge is training hard and is one of the principal runners on the Saints Cross Country team this fall. Hunter Karnedy is the leading recruit for this year after posting outstanding results at Junior Olympics last March. He is joined by Isaac Noyes, younger brother of Noah, who was one of the top racers at the Eastern High School Championships last spring. First-year students Rob Courtney and Tyler Ludington will also be vying for a spot this fall. The men's team was rather inconsistent last winter finishing anywhere from 4th to 8th overall, but should improve this winter as they have a lot of collegiate racing experience and are looking strong this fall in dryland training.

The Nordic team will travel together over the mid-semester break to do some dryland training in the Ottawa and the Lake Placid regions. In January, Head Coach Ethan Townsend will take Meghan, Tora, Becca, Angus, Hunter, and Matt to US Nationals on the Olympic trails at Soldier Hollow in Utah. The rest of the team will train with Assistant Coaches Bob Axtell and Jenny Townsend in Lake Placid, before heading to the Burlington area for their first carnival races. The team is, as always, anxious for the snow to fly and looking forward to their collegiate carnival schedule.
