UNDERWOOD 22ND, TREMBLE 31ST AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

March 9 - Kate Underwood finished 22nd in the women's 15K free technique Nordic race and Eric Tremble was 21st in the men's 20K free at the NCAA Skiing Championships hosted by Middlebury College on Friday morning. Underwood was 23rd in the classic championship on Wednesday and Tremble was 32nd in the men's classic.

Underwood rounded the 15-kilometer course at the Rikert Touring Center in a time of 48:0.8, placing her 22nd among all racers. She was fourth EISA skier to cross the finish line. Katerina Hanusova of the University of Nevada-Reno won the race in a time of 44:23.2, almost a full minute ahead of her nearest competitor.

Tremble finished 31st in the men's 20K freestyle race in a time of 53:47.3. Pietro Brogginin of Denver University was the first to cross the line, finishing in 50:44.8 to lead all racers.

UNDERWOOD 23RD, TREMBLE 32ND AT NCAA'S

March 8 - Kate Underwood finished 23rd and Eric Tremble was 32nd in the classical Nordic events at the NCAA Skiing Championships hosted by Middlebury College on Wednesday morning. The women competed in a 5K classic-style race while the men raced a 10K classic. Both races took place at the Rikert Touring Center.

Underwood finished to course in a time of 17:24.1, finishing 23rd among the best collegiate racers in the nation. Katerina Hanusova of the University of Nevada-Reno won the race in a time of 15:59.4, 27 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

Tremble placed 32nd in the men's 10K classic. The senior rounded the course in a time 32:02.0. Wolf Wallendorf of Denver University led a trio of Pioneer racers to the finish in a time of 28:37.5. Denver took the top-three spots in the race. The freestyle Nordic event will take place on Friday morning.

SAINTS EIGHTH AT MIDDLEBURY WINTER CARNIVAL

February 25 - The St. Lawrence University ski team finished eighth at the Middlebury Winter Carnival, the last carnival on the 2001 Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association circuit, and will now see which individuals qualify for the NCAA championships to be held in March. Vermont took first at the carnival with 910 points, Dartmouth was second with 891 while host Middlebury was third with 805 points.

Wil Regii paced the men's team in the slalom event on Ross run at the Middlebury Snow Bowl. He had a two-run time of 1:29.72 and finished 23rd, earning 23 team points. Michael Wilcox and Chad Jacob tied for 32nd both crossing the finish in a time of 1:31.76. Tim Witman was 39th while Fritz Smith finished 42nd. Matthew Knittle of Vermont won the race in a time of 1:24.4 to lead the Catamounts to the event team title.

The women ran the same run featuring 49 gates and a 146-meter vertical drop. Gusty Swift of Dartmouth won the event in a time of 1:39.21 but Vermont took the team title, placing racers 3-4-5-6. Lauren Bennett paced the St. Lawrence skiers with a time of 1:52.94 for 36th place. Julie Zingerline was 39th while Melissa Henrichon finished in 46th.

Over at the Nordic venue, the men and women both placed seventh in the 15K free technique race. For the men, Angus McCusker posted the best finish in the skate event, placing 20th in a time of 40:44.9, earning 26 team points and a NCAA point. Zach Stegeman came across the line in a time of 40:58.1 for 24th place. Dereck Hackmann was 30th and Eric Tremble placed 32nd. Eric Pepper came in at 45th and Ian Hubbard rounded out the Saint finishers in 51st. Torgeir Lien, who won the 5K classic on Friday, of Vermont took the race in 38:08.4 as the Catamounts took the team title.

Kate Underwood, who came in 18th with a time of 46:53.1, earning 28 team points and three NCAA points paced the women. Kate Demond was 21st at 48:07.8 while Melissa Hayman crossed the line in 32nd at 49:29.3. Kristin Fellows was 35th, Heidi Dwyer 43rd and Brenna Knowles crossed the line in 47th place. Ekaterina Ivanova of Vermont won the race in a time of 43:06.3 but Dartmouth won the team title by placing six racers in the top ten.

SAINTS EIGHTH AFTER DAY ONE OF MIDDLEBURY CARNIVAL

February 23 - The St. Lawrence University ski team is in eighth after the first day of competition at the Middlebury College Winter Carnival. Vermont is leading after day one while just one point separates second-place Dartmouth and third-place Middlebury. The Middlebury Carnival is the last chance for skiers in the EISA to earn NCAA points and qualify for the national championships in early March.

The women's Nordic team had the best finish of the day placing fifth in the 5K classical. Kate Underwood, who missed last week's carnival at Williams due to sickness, had a fourth place finish in a time of 16:35.9, earning 39 team points and 17 NCAA points. Underwood should have earned a spot in the NCAA championships with her solid season-long finishes. Kristin Fellows continues to race well for the Saints, taking 20th place and earning 26 team points and an NCAA point. Melissa Hayman and Kate Demong finished 34th and 35th, just one-tenth of a second apart. Hayman crossed the finish at 18:25.1 and Demong was just behind at 18:25.2. Brenna Knowles took 39th place while Heidi Dwyer came in a 44th. Erin Quinnhurst of Dartmouth won the race in a time of 15:56.6, leading the Big Green to the team title.

Eric Tremble took 30 team points and six NCAA points with his 15th place in the men's 10K classical Nordic race. Tremble finished in 30:11.4 and should have secured his spot at the NCAA's. Togeir Lien of Vermont won the men's race in 27:54.9 while Middlebury took the team title with just one more point than Vermont. The next three Saint finishers were separated by just four places. Zach Stegeman came in 28th, Eric Pepper 29th and Angus McCusker raced across the line in 31st. Dereck Hackmann crossed in 44th at 33:07.6 while Ian Hubbard was in 45th, eight seconds behind Hackmann.

Shaina Mulkern on Vermont led the Catamounts to the women's giant slalom title crossing the course three one-hundredths of a second ahead of teammate Erica MacConnell. Lauren Bennet was the top Saints finisher crossing the line with a two-run time of 2:24.83 and 38th place on the Allen run at the Middlebury Snow Bowl. Melissa Henrichon came in 39th in 2:25.12.

Tim Witman led the Saints men in the giant slalom with his 35th place finish and time of 2:12.52. Michael Wilcox and Fritz Smith round out the top-three SLU finishers. Wilcox was 29th while Smith was 42nd. Chad Jacob carved his way to a 44th place finish with a time of 2:15.20 and Wil Regii was 46th at 2:16.75. Vermont took 1-2 and the team title in the men's GS as well. John Minahan took first place crossing the line at 2:04.11 and had the fastest single run time of the day at 59.51.

SAINTS FINISH EIGHTH AT WILLIAMS WINTER CARNIVAL

February 17 - Eric Tremble finished sixth in the men's 15K Nordic freestyle to highlight the second day of competition at the Williams Winter Carnival for the St. Lawrence University ski team. The finish was Tremble's best finish in a skate-style event this season. The Saints combined ski team finished eighth at the Carnival while Dartmouth took first, Vermont second and Middlebury was third.

Tremble finished the 20-kilometer course at Prospect Mountain in a time of 53:35.8, earning him a sixth-place finish as well as 28 team points and 15 NCAA points. Scott McArt of Dartmouth won the event in a time of 51:54.4 while Vermont won the team title, edging out Dartmouth, 82 points to 81. Angus McCusker turned in a time of 57:21.3 placing him 27th in the field. A pair of Saints freshmen finished 36th and 37th. Travis Wyman finished in 59:00.07 and Scott Leuenberger came across just behind Wyman in a time of 59:02.4.

Kate Demong turned in her best skate finish of the season as well, placing 17th in the women's 15K Nordic event. Demong crossed the line in a time of 47:31.3 and earned 20 team points and four NCAA points. Melissa Hayman was the next Saint finisher when she finished the Prospect Mountain course in 31st, earning 12 team points. Heidi Dwyer came home in 40th position while Holly Dodge took a 45th place finish. Ekaterina Ivanova of the University of Vermont won the event in a time of 43:49.5 while Dartmouth took the team title with three racers finishing in the top seven.

Over on Jiminy Peak, the alpine team was negotiating the slalom course on the Lower Exhibition run. The alpine team had three skiers pick up NCAA points, Chad Jacob and Wil Regii on the men's side and Melissa Medinger on the women's side.

Jacob finished 18th in the men's slalom event with a two-run time of 1:45.69, good enough to take 17 team points and three NCAA points. Teammate Regii was 20th overall with a time of 1:47.91. Regii gave the Saints 15 team points with the finish and earned himself one NCAA point. Tim Witman came in 26th, crossing the line in 1:49.36. Fritz Smith rounds out the St. Lawrence finishers as he came in 41st overall. Greg Blaisdell of New Hampshire won the men's slalom in a time of 1:39.15 as Dartmouth took the team title, placing racers in third, fourth and fifth.

Medinger led the Saints women's alpiners with a 19th place finish, giving her two more NCAA points and the team 19 points. Medinger crossed the finish line on the Lower Exhibition course in a time of 1:54.96. Erica MacConnell of Vermont led a trio of Catamount skiers who took the top three spots in a time of 1:46.06 to lead Vermont to the team title. Lauren Bennett finished 42nd and Melissa Henrichon was 48th to round out the top three Saints finishers.

The final carnival of EISA season is next weekend at Middlebury and will be the last chance for racers to earn a spot in the NCAA championships.

WELCH POSTS BEST FINISH OF SEASON

February 17 - Brian Welch posted his best giant slalom finish of the season placing 18th and earning three NCAA points and 19 team points at the Williams Winter Carnival at Jiminy Peak on Friday afternoon. After one day of competition, the St. Lawrence combined ski team stands in eighth place overall bolstered by the men's alpine team's best giant slalom finish of the season with a sixth place. Both the men's and women's Nordic teams competed in 3x5 classical style relays.

The giant slalom course proved to treacherous as three skiers were sent careening through protective nets into the woods. Welch paced the Saints men's alpiners, finishing in 18th with a two-run time of 1:48.42 on the difficult Upper Whirlaway run at Jiminy Peak. Fritz Smith and Chad Jacob finished 29th and 30th, respectively, earning a combined 23 team points. Wil Regii did not finish his first run of the day while Tim Witman bowed out on his second run after an impressive first run. Bradley Wall of Dartmouth finished first in a time of 1:42.91 and the Big Green took the team title placing four racers in the top ten.

Melissa Henrichon was the only Saint on the women's alpine team to finish her two runs on fast run, finishing 37th in a time of 2:03.8, earning 10 team points. Vermont won the women's GS as their two top racers, Erica MacConnell and Shaina Mulkern, finished one-two.

Illness on the Nordic teams led to disappointing finishes in the men's and women's 3x5K classical style relays at the Prospect Mountain facilities. The men's team of Eric Tremble, Eric Pepper and Travis Wyman finished 11th with Tremble turning in the best split at 14:09.2 while Pepper turned in a 14:58.7 time. The three finished with a total time of 45:29.1. Kate DeMong, Mellissa Hayman and Heidi Dwyer turned in an 11th place finish as DeMong turned in a time of 18:12.6 and Hayman finished in 18:24.8 as the three combined for a time of 56:20.5. The team of Holly Dodge, Elli Becker and Anette Nilssen finished in 58:47.9 with Nilssen's anchor leg pacing all the Saint's women at 18:04.7.

Vermont cruised to the win in the men's relay with a time of 41:53.4 while Dartmouth took the women's first with a time of 49:28.3.

SAINTS FINISH EIGHTH IN DARTMOUTH CARNIVAL

February 11 - St. Lawrence University's ski teams finished eighth in the team standings at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival following Sunday's weather-delayed running of the giant slalom competition.

Melissa Medinger had the top Saint finish in the giant slalom with a 23rd place finish in 2:05.38. Julie Zingerline was 38th, Melissa Henrichon 39th, Lauren Bennett was 41st and Andrea Ferri 44th for the Saint women. Brian Welch led the men with a 32nd place finish with Tim Witman 38th, Mike Wilcox 43rd, Will Regii 44th and Chad Jacob 46th.

In Saturday's men's Nordic competition, Eric Tremble earned NCAA points with a 16th place finish in 31:19.7. Angus McCusker was 27th, Eric Pepper 33rd and Zach Stegeman 40th for the Saints.

The women's Nordic team finished fourth in the 10 kilometer pursuit competition on Saturday to highlight Saturday events for SLU. Kate Underwood was eighth in 1:07.20.2 to lead the Saints while Kate Demong was 20th in 1:09.40 and Kristin Fellows was 24th in 1:10.38. Melissa Hayman finished 33rd.

In the slalom, Melissa Medinger had an 18th place finish and earned NCAA qualification points, combining runs of 49.19 and 48.94 seconds for a 1:38.13 total time. Lauren Bennett was 29th and Melissa Henrichon was 32nd. Will Regii led the Saint men in the slalom with a 30th place finish while Chad Jacob was 33rd, Brian Welch 34th and Tim Witman 36th.

Underwood led a pack of three Saint skiers in the top 20 at the Dartmouth College Carnival women's 10 kilometer cross country on Friday and the Saint women's team finished third in the event. The Saint men were 7th in the men's Nordic competition and the Saints are 5th in the team standings.

Friday's scheduled men's and women's giant slalom races were postponed until Sunday by weather conditions.

Underwood finished ninth overall in 35:08 to lead the Saint women. Kristin Fellows was 12th in 35:30.7 while Kate Demong was 19th in 36:16.9. Melissa Hayman finished 22nd and Brenna Knowles was 28th for the Saints. In the men's race, Eric Tremble was the top Saint finisher in 16th in 31:19.7 with Angus McCusker 27th in 32:06 and Eric Pepper finishing 33rd. Saturday events include the second Nordic races for men and women and the men's and women's slalom.

ST. LAWRENCE SEVENTH AT STOWE

February 3 - The St. Lawrence ski team took seventh place at the University of Vermont Winter Carnival held in Stowe, Vt., over the past weekend. Kate Underwood and Eric Tremble highlighted the nordic races for the Saints while Melissa Medinger and Will Regii turned in impressive performances in the slalom. St. Lawrence took fifth in all four races this weekend, the men's and women's 10K freestyle as well as the men's 10K classical and women's 5K classical. Vermotn won their home carnival, accumulating 717 points over the two-days while Dartmouth and Williams rounded out the top three schools.

Tremble took eighth place in the men's 10K classical style nordic race, crossing the line on the Trapp Family Lodge course in 33:04.8, earning 26 team points and 13 NCAA points. Angus McCusker, who finished ninth in the 10K freestyle on Friday, took 19th place while Zach Stegeman was just behind coming across the line in 21st. Eric Pepper took a 31st place finished while Dereck Hackman and Scott Leuenberger tied for 41st. Torgier Lien of Vermont won the race in a time of 31:32.9 and was followed across the finish by two teammates as Vermont won the event.

Underwood took her second top-five finish of the weekend with fifth-place in the women's 5K classical nordic. Underwood took fourth in the 10K freestyle on Friday, and rounded the course on Saturday in 18:56.3 for fifth. Kristin Fellows turned in an impressive 12th-place finish and earned nine NCAA points. Kate Demong took 24th as Brenna Knowles crossed the line just behind teammate Mellissa Hayman in 36th place. Ekaterina Ivanova of Vermont won the race in a time of 18:05.7 while Dartmouth took the team title with 93 points.

On Mansfield Mountain, Melissa Medinger took 28th place in the women's slalom on Namnorth Slope. Medinger, who had a season's-best 11th place finish in the giant slalom on Friday, took 1:50.28 to finish her two runs. Andrea Ferri was the next Saint finisher in 44th followed by Julie Zingerline in 45th. Lauren Bennett took 53rd while Melissa Henrichon was 57th. Gusty Swift of Dartmouth with a two-run time of 1:42.09, but the Vermont took the next five scoring places to win the event.

Will Regii paced the Saint men's slalom finishes with a 42nd place showing. Jon MacDougall was 44th while Mike Wilcox was 47th and Tim Witman was 53rd. Bradley Wall of Dartmouth and Greg Blaisdell of New Hampshire tied for first with a time of 1:35.01 as Dartmouth took the team crown, 87-85 over Vermont.

SAINTS IN SIXTH AFTER FIRST DAY OF UVM CARNIVAL

February 2 - The St. Lawrence University ski team sits in sixth place after the first day of racing at the University of Vermont Carnival held in Stowe, Vermont. Melissa Medinger posted her best finish, taking 11th place, in the giant slalom. Kate Underwood continues to excel on the nordic course, as she finished fourth in the women's 10K freestyle.

On Mt. Mansfield, Medinger finished the tough course with a two-run time of 2:01.18, giving her best finish of the season with an 11th place. Andrea Ferri had the next best Saint finish, crossing the line in 35th place, while Melissa Henrichon posted a 38th place finish.

Brian Welch paced the Saint men alpiners as he took a 30th place finish, earning 12 team points. Tim Witman finished 32nd while Mike Wilcox and Will Regii finished tied for 42nd. Chad Jacob rounds out the top-five Saints skiers as he cam in 46th.

On the nordic trail at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Underwood continued her feverish 2001 pace with a fourth place finish in the women's 10K freestyle with a time of 34:45.2. She earned 30 team points and also picked up 17 NCAA points with the finish. Kate Demong also picked up NCAA points with a 19th place finish, also good enough to notch 20 more team points. Kristin Fellows crossed the line in 35th place while Brenna Knowles took 46th and Heidi Dwyer was 49th.

Angus McCusker placed ninth in the men's 10K freestyle with a time of 30:15.6, the third nordic skier to earn NCAA points and the fourth between the alpine and nordic. Zach Stegeman earned 17 team points and Eric Tremble 16 as they finished 23rd and 25th, respectively. Derecl Hackmann came in 28th while Eric Pepper took 42nd and Scott Leuenberger came in 44th.

Day two of the carnival continues on Saturday as the men's and women's slalom takes place as well as the women's 5K classic and men's 10K classic are also held.

FELLOWS LEADS RELAY TO THIRD PLACE FINISH

January 20 - St. Lawrence University sophomore Kate Underwood finished third in the women's 15 kilometer Nordic race at the Colby Carnival and had the third fastest leg of the day in the mixed relay on Saturday to finish another strong weekend of Nordic competition for the Saints.

SLU the Saints finished eighth overall in the carnival, but were third in the women's freestyle technique Nordic race and finished fifth with a two-team combination in the mixed relay.

Underwood skied the 15 kilometer free technique race in 47:48.4, just under five seconds behind second place finisher Kate Pearson of Dartmouth. Ekaterina Ivanova of Vermont won the race in 46:32.5. Sophomore Kristin Fellows finished 14th and was the second Saint finisher in 49:41.7 while Kate DeMong finished 18th in 50:31.9 to complete the Saint scoring. Melissa Hayman was 39th, Brenna Knowles was 45th and Heidi Dwyer was 48th.

"Kristin Fellows has established herself as a force on the circuit," said head nordic coach Jim Defoe. "She has posted two top-15 finishes already this season and had the second-fastest relay split over the past weekend at the Colby Carnival."

Eric Tremble led the Saint men in a 20 kilometer free technique race with a 15th place finish in 53:46.2. Angus McCusker was 18th in 53:50.2 and Zach Stegeman completed the Saint scoring with a 31st place finish in 56:50.2. The Saints were seventh as a team in the event with Eric Pepper finishing 36th, Scott Leuenberger 40th and Ian Hubbard 44th.

In Saturday's Nordic relay competition, Kristin Fellows led off the Saint A team with a 17.08 leg, Angus McCusker skied his leg in 14:47, Underwood had a 14.10 and Eric Tremble anchored the team home in 12:37 for a 58:42.0 clocking. The team of Kate Demong, Eric Pepper, Mellisa Hayman and Zach Stegeman finished 14th in 1:03.22.

"As a team, we have already come a long way since training in Ironwood, Michigan over Thanksgiving break," said Defoe. "Everyone has been dedicated to the training and the improvements can be seen in our results."

First run difficulties plagued the women's alpine team as the Saints finished eighth in the giant slalom. The Saint trio of Andrea Ferri, Julie Zingerline and Melissa Henrichon finished 35th through 37th with all three improving their second run times by over seven seconds

. Tim Witman cracked the top 20 for the men's alpine team and earned NCAA points with an 19th place finish with an overall time of 2:19.27 in the men's giant slalom. Fritz Smith finished 25th and Mike Wilcox was 27th for the men. SLU was seventh as a team in the event.

In Saturday's slalom competition, Lauren Bennett was 31st, Henrichon was 32nd and Melissa Medinger was 36th for the women while Will Regii was 25th, Chad Jacob was 28th and Smith was 31st.

UNDERWOOD'S SECOND PLACE FINISH HIGHLIGHTS NORDIC SPRINTS

January 13 - Saints skier Kate Underwood finished second in the women's nordic sprint competition during day two of the St. Lawrence University Winter Carnival held at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Wilmington, N.Y. on Saturday. The freestyle sprint covered a 1.2-kilometer course featuring both a fast downhill slope and a difficult climb at the biathlon site at Van Hoevenberg.

Ekaterina Ivanova of the University of Vermont won the women's sprint after qualifying first in the time trials with a time of 3:02.2. Underwood finished second in the finals race after being seeded fifth with a qualifying time of 3:11.2. Kristin Fellows placed 11th in the finals and Kate DeMong rounded out the top three St. Lawrence finishers with her 15th place showing.

In the men's competition on the same course, Middlebury swept first and second place with Matthew Whitcomb taking first and Colin Rodgers right behind him. The two finished in the opposite order in the time trials, with Rodgers finishing with a top time of 2:31.6 and Whitcomb pacing the course at 2:32.5. Angus McCusker was the top Saints finisher in the finals taking 10th place. Eric Tremble finished 11th while Eric Pepper had a 19th place finish.

DARTMOUTH SWEEPS SLALOM EVENT AT ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY WINTER CARNIVAL

January 13 - Bradley Wall and Jeannie Eisberg, each skiing for Dartmouth College, took first in the slalom held during day two of the St. Lawrence University Winter Carnival at Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, N.Y. on Saturday. Set up on the Thruway run at Whiteface, the men's course featured a 209-meter drop and the women's fell off 148 meters from start to finish.

Wall, who won the giant slalom on Friday, took the slalom event by .08 of a second, finishing the course in a combined time of 1:42.50. The top Saints finisher was Chad Jacob placing 21st in a time of 1:55.29. Michael Wilcox and Wil Regii rounded out the top-three St. Lawrence racers with 25th and 30th place finishes, respectively.

Eisberg's win was more decisive as she finished .79 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, negotiating the steep slope and soft snow in a time of 1:20.60. Lauren Bennett paced the Saints skiers with a 21st place finish. Andrea Ferri raced in at 29th and Melissa Henrichon came in 34th.

MEDINGER WINS THREE RACES DURING CHRISTMAS BREAK

January 2 - Melissa Medinger, a freshman alpine skier at St. Lawrence University, took three first place finishes during the Christmas break. Medinger won the Swain Christmas Race giant slalom, the Snow Country Race slalom, and the Macintosh Slalom Race slalom, while Chad Jacob took three sixth-place finishes on the men's' side in the same three races.

Medinger finished with a combined time of 1:25.09 on the Wheels Run giant slalom course at the Swain Christmas Race. She was over 3.5 seconds faster than her nearest competitor, finishing in 43.08 seconds on her first run and 42.01 on her second. She had a 59.32 total time to take the Snow Country slalom on Diann's Run and a 1:01.48 time at the Macintosh Slalom, also on Diann's Run. Lauren Bennett, a sophomore, finished 11th in the Macintosh slalom.

Chad Jacob finished sixth on the men's side at the same three events. Will Regii and Jon MacDougall took 12th and 13th place finishes, respectively, at the Joe Dodge Slalom Race held at Wildcat Mountain. At MJ's Race held at Waterville Valley, Timothy Witman notched a 10th place finish on the World Cup run at Waterville. He finished with a total time of 1:14.30, just 1.57 seconds behind the leader in a tightly contested field.

NORDIC TEAM IMPRESSIVE IN ELITE RACE

November 20, 2000 - The Saints nordic team showed promising results at a Continental Cup race in Val Cartier, Que., against the best skiiers in North America. The race featured skiiers from both the Canadian and U.S. National teams, giving St. Lawrence perhaps the stiffest competition they will face this season.

Kate Underwood was the the Saints top female finisher, finishing 25th overall and third among the Junior skiiers at the event. She was the fourth college finisher while two women from the Canadian National team took first and second.

Eric Tremble was the first Saint finisher among the men with a 62nd overall place and finishing fourth among the college skiiers at the event.

NORDIC TEAM TO TRAIN NEAR MARQUETTE

November 18, 2000 - The St. Lawrence University nordic team left early Saturday morning in the hopes of finding snow in the upper peninsula of Michigan near Marquette University. "We were watching the weather forecasts for all of New England and the Midwest before we decided to head for Ironwood, Michigan on the upper peninsula of the state." said assistant coach Ethan Townsend.

The nordic team was hoping to stay closer to Canton, N.Y., to use more days for taining rather than traveling, but the same warm weather that forced the alpine team to Colorado sent the nordic team to Michigan. The team will spend six days training over the Thanksgiving school break in preparation for the upcoming season.

ALPINE TEAM HEADS FOR SNOWY COLORADO

November 18, 2000 - 23 members and two coaches of the men's and women's alpine ski teams are leaving Friday afternoon for the snowy slopes of the Rocky Mountains for six days of skiing in Summit County, Colorado. While there, the teams' will train at Copper Mountain, Winter Park and Breckenridge as they prepare for the upcoming season.

"The kids are really excited to finally hit some snow," said head coach Jeff Pier. "We've been doing eight weeks of dryland training and I think everyone is ready to finally do some skiing, including the coaching staff. As a staff, we are fired up to get the season started and this is a great way to do that."

The team was originally scheduled to head to north to Canada, but the warm conditions in the east forced the team to head west.

ALPINE HEAD COACH JEFF PIER NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR

Men's and women's head alpine coach Jeff Pier was voted the 2000 USSA-New Hampshire Alpine Racing Association Alpine Coach of the Year. The award is given annually to recognize the hard work and tireless efforts of one coach a year.

A luncheon will be held on Thrusday, Spetember 21, in Killington, Vermont, to recognize all USSA division and state racing association coach of the year individuals. The three "Regional Coach of the Year" individuals will also be revealed and recognized at the luncheon.
