2000 Archives UNDERWOOD HAS OUTSTANDING RACE IN CLASSIC CROSS COUNTRY, 2ND EASTERN FINISHER Freshman Kate Underwood skied her best race of the season and finished 14th overall in the women's 15 kilometer classic technique Nordic race as the NCAA Ski Championships concluded Saturday. Underwood finished in 50:19.5 and missed All America status by just four places. Tessa Benoit of Vermont was 10th and was the only Eastern skier to finish ahead of Underwood. Liz Hollenbach battled fatigue in the race and finished 29th in 52:29.1. "It was a great showing for Kate...her best finish in the EISA season was 10th, and out here she was the second Eastern finisher. Liz had a good NCAA meet as well, and with Josh Rothman and Zach Lambert in the alpine events we were able to finish 13th with just four skiers. Everyone in front of us had a full team of 12 or were just one off a full team," said Nordic coach Jim Defoe. "Our guys did pretty well considering that Zach is new to this level of sking and Josh was battling a bad back throughout the week," said alpine coach Brian Peterson. HOLLENBACH 24TH, UNDERWOOD 30TH IN NCAA FREESTYLE CROSS COUNTRY; Liz Hollenbach finished 24th in 19:40 and freshman Kate Underwood was 30th in 20:34.7 in Thursday's 5 kilometer freestyle technique cross country race at the NCAA Ski Championships in Park City Utah. Hollenbach and Underwood will compete in the classic technique race on Saturday. Josh Rothman finished 25th in the slalom in Friday competition. He combined runs of 53.36 and 57.47. SAINTS 11TH IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER MEN'S G.S. Josh Rothman finished 22nd and Zack Lambert was 26th in the giant slalom after the first day of competition in the NCAA Ski Championships at Park City, UT. Their combined points place St. Lawrence 11th in the 17 team field after one day's competition. Rothman combined runs of 1:13.45 and 1:15.89 for a total of 2:29.34 on the two run course while Lambert skied the first run in 1:13.94 and the second in 1:16.13 for a 2:30.07 total. Matt Knittle of Vermont was the NCAA champion in the event with a two run time of 2:21.32 with teammate Brandon Dyksterhouse second. The one-two finish helped Vermont establish a ten point lead on Colorado after the first day of competition which also included the women's giant slalom. The Saint women's Nordic duo of Liz Hollenbach and Kate Underwood will make their NCAA debut today when they ski the women's 5 kilometer freestyle race. SAINT SKIERS QUALIFY FOUR FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS St. Lawrence University's men's and women's ski teams will be represented by four skiers at the NCAA Ski Championships to be held at Park City, UT March 8-12. Saint senior Liz Hollenbach, Shelburne, VT will be joined by freshman Kate Underwood, Johnstown, NY in the Nordic competition while Josh Rothman, a senior from Wilmington, VT will be joined by sophomore Zach Lambert, New Castle, NH in the alpine competition. Hollenbach had one of the outstanding carnival seasons in Saint women's skiing history as she finished fifth in the EISA overall in freestyle Nordic skiing and was sixth in classical Nordic skiing. She finished fourth in the freestyle competitions at both the Vermont and Dartmouth Carnivals and had fifth place finishes in classic competition at New Hampshire and Vermont. She was named second team All EISA. Underwood capped an outstanding freshman season which included a tenth in the freestyle at the Vermont Carnival. She was consistently in the top 20 in both classical and freestyle competition and finished 16th overall in the final Nordic qualifying to earn her trip to Park City. Rothman finished 17th overall on the alpine qualification list and Lambert was 21st to earn their spots at the NCAAs. Rothman was 13th on the slalom list with a season best of seventh at the Williams Carnival while Lambert was 14th on the final slalom list with a season best of eighth at the Dartmouth Carnival. Rothman was 16th in the final giant slalom standings to go with his strong season in the slalom. The Saints finished seventh overall at the Middlebury Carnival, which doubles at the EISA Championships. SLU was fifth in the women's Nordic freestyle competition and sixth in the women's classic competition for its top finishes. Hollenbach led the women's Nordic team in the 5 kilometer freestyle competition with a seventh in 15:15.2 while Underwood was 18th and Brenna Knowles 27th. Underwood was 14th and Hollenbach 18th with Knowles 22nd in the classic competition. Melissa Henrichon wsa 37th, non-scorer Julie Zingerline was 41st, Kami Koleva was 49th and Anya Burke was 52nd in the slalom for the Saint women's alpine team while Henrichon's 28th led the team in the giant slalom with Zingerline finishing 36th and Burke 39th. Tobin Merganthaler finished 24th, Brian Welch was 25th and Lambert was 39th in the men's slalom at Middlebury while Rothman finished 19th, Welch 21st and Chad Jacob 43rd for the top three finishes in the giant slalom. Eric Tremble's 23rd place finish led the Nordic men in the 10 kilometer freestyle with Eric Pepper 38th and Zach Stegeman 42nd. Tremble also finished 23rd in the 20 kilometer classic race with Pepper 32nd and Stegeman 39th. HOLLENBACH, UNDERWOOD, ROTHMAN LEAD SAINT SKIERS AT WILLIAMS Women's Nordic standouts Liz Hollenbach and Kate Underwood had big weekends and men's alpine skier Josh Rothman came through with two top ten finishes as the Saint men's and women's ski teams finished sixth overall in the Williams Winter Carnival last weekend. The best performance of the weekend for the Saints came in the women's freestyle pursuit cross country competition where the Saints were third as a team, trailing second place Middlebury by just seven points. The Saint women's Nordic team was sixth in the 10 kilometer classical cross country competition on Friday. The Saint men's alpine team also had two good finishes, finishing fifth in both the slalom and giant slalom competition. Senior Hollenbach continued her consistent string of top ten finishes in both classic and freestyle Nordic competition. While times were not available due to problems on the part of the results service for the EISA, she finished a strong tenth in the 10 kilometer classic race with freshman Underwood just three spots back in 13th. Hattie Shelton was the third Saint scorer in 23rd place while Brenna Knowles finished 28th and Kristin Fellows 37th. In the freestyle pursuit race Hollenbach was sixth in a total time of 1:16:37.1 while Underwood was seventh with a total time of 1:17.28.4. Shelton came through with a top-20 finish as she turned in a time of 1:21.10.2 for 17th place and Kowles finished 20th in 1:21.56.6. Rothman had two top ten finishes to pick up important NCAA qualification points in the alpine competition. He finished ninth in a two run time of 1:38.13, in the Friday giant slalom and was seventh with a two run time of 1:35.45, just .29 seconds out of fourth in Saturday's slalom competition. Zach Lambert added an 18th place finish in the slalom while Tobin Mergenthaler was 22nd and Chad Jacob 27th. Brian Welch was 15th and Kacey Cowan was 22nd in the men's giant slalom. Eric Tremble had the top finish for the men's Nordic team in the 10 kilometer classic race as he finished 24th. Dustin Williamson was 29th and Zach Stegeman finished 34th with Eric Pepper 36th. In the freestyle pursuit, Tremble again finished 24th to lead the Saints with Stegeman 28th, Pepper 36th and Williamson 37th. Melissa Henrichon's 30th place finish led the Saint women's alpine team in the giant slalom with Andrea Ferri finishing 33rd, Kami Koleva 34th and Emmy Jervey 36th. Lauren Bennett was 39th, Henrichon 40th and Koleva 41st in the slalom. HOLLENBACH, UNDERWOOD HAVE STRONG SHOWINGS AT DARTMOUTH CARNIVAL Senior Liz Hollenbach recorded her fourth straight top five finish Friday as she was fourth in the 10 kilometer freestyle cross country race at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival on Friday and freshman Kate Underwood had one of the top times of the day in the 3x5 kilometer women's relay on Saturday. The Saints were seventh overall in the Carnival, which was won by the University of Vermont. Hollenbach toured the course in 25:24.3, less than 13 seconds out of third, to continue an outstanding senior season which has seen her post two fourth place finishes and two fifth place finishes in her last five races. Underwood also picked up valuable NCAA points as she finished 13th in 26:47.6 on Friday while Hattie Shelton was SLU's third scorer with a 25th place finish. The Saints were fifth as a team in the event with 68 points. The Saint men were seventh as a team in the 15 kilometer men's freestyle race. Eric Tremble scored NCAA points with an 18th place finish in 45:00.1 with Zach Stegeman's 32nd and a 36th by Eric Pepper completing the Saint scoring. The women's alpine team was eighth and the men's team ninth in giant slalom competition at the Dartmouth Skiway. Melissa Henrichon's 47th was the top Saint finish while Anya Burke and Laurel Buell were the other Saint scorers in 52d and 53rd. Lauren Bennett added a 50th place finish as the Saints' designated non-scorer in the race. Josh Rothman's 30th led the Saint men while Zach Lambert was 38th and Brian Welch was 44th. The Saint women were seventh as a team in the 3x5 kilometer relay with a total time of 50:24.0. Sheldon skied the lead leg, Underwood turned a 15.58, the fourth fastest time of the day overall on the second leg and Hollenbach anchored the team with a 16:43 leg. The Saint men were 12th in the 3x5 kilometer relay with a time of 42:01.0. Stegeman had the fastest leg for the Saints with a 13:53 anchor. Tremble skied the course in 14:12 on the leadoff and Pepper turned a 13:56 on the second leg. The highlight of Saturday competition for the Saints was a fourth as a team by the men's alpine squad in the slalom. Lambert scored NCAA points with an 11th place finish and a two-run time of 1:37.97 while Rothman was 22nd and Welch 32nd. The Saint women were ninth in the slalom with Courtney Walter's 32nd place finish leading the way. Bennett was 53rd and Henrichon 57th for the Saints. HOLLENBACH HAS TOP FINISH FOR WOMEN'S NORDIC, MEN'S ALPINE SHINE AT VERMONT CARNIVAL While it took a better part of a week to get official results after problems with the scoring system, Saint senior Nordic skier Liz Hollenbach continued her outstanding season with a fourth and a fifth and strong team showings by the women's Nordic team and the men's alpine squad helped St. Lawrence finish fifth overall in the Vermont Winter Carnival. The women's Nordic team was fourth, beating Dartmouth and just three point behind third place New Hampshire in the team competition in the 5 kilometer freestyle race and finished fifth in the 15 kilometer classic cross country team competition. Josh Rothman had two outstanding races to lead the men's alpine team which finished fifth as a team in the slalom and sixth in the giant slalom. Hollenbach locked up a second straight trip to the NCAA Championships with her second and third top-five finishes of the season. Her fifth at the UNH Carnival was the top Nordic finish for a Saint woman at the Division I level, and she improved that by one spot with a fourth in the 5 kilometer freestyle race at UVM on Friday. She finished in 16:14.6, just seven seconds out of third, and came back with a fifth in the 15 kilometer classic race on Saturday, touring the course in 56:14.0. Freshman Kate Underwood also had two outstanding races and earned points toward NCAA qualification. Underwood was 10th in the 5 kilometer freestyle race in 16:46.6 and finished 16th in the longer classic race in 59:07.l0. Hattie Shelton was the third Saint scorer in the classic race with a 20th while Brenna Knowles was 26th and Shelton added a 26th in the freestyle competition. The men's Nordic team's top finish of the weekend was a 20th by Eric Tremble in the 20 kilometer classic race. Dustin Williamson was 30th and Zach Stegeman 31st in that race while Stegeman's 26th led the men in the 10 kilometer freestyle race with Tremble 30th and Eric Pepper 34th. Rothman picked up NCAA points in both the giant slalom and slalom to lead the alpine teams. He was 10th in the slalom with a two-run time of 1:39.60 and Zach Lambert added a 13th in 1:40.58 with Brian Welch 26th to help the team to its best team finish of the season. Rothman was 11th in 1:53.93 in the giant slalom with Welch 28th and Chad Jacob 30th. Melissa Henrichon was 29th, Anya Burke 36th, Courtney Walter 39th and Julie Zingerline 41st in the women's giant slalom while Kami Koleva was 39th, Henrichon 41st and Burke 42nd in the slalom for the Saint women. HOLLENBACK FIFTH IN UNH NORDIC RACE Saint senior Liz Hollenback toured the ten kilometer cross country course at the University of New Hampshire Winter Carnival in 39:30.0 to finish fifth in the classical style Nordic race on Friday for the top carnival finish by a Saint woman in several seasons. Hollenback's previous best EISA finish was a ninth in last season's Middlebury Carnival and the fifth place finish at New Hampshire and the NCAA points which go with it, will go a long way toward guaranteeing a second straight appearance in the NCAA Championships. The Saints placed two in the top 15 as freshman Kate Underwood was 15th and earned NCAA points as well with a time of 40:22.7. Brenna Knowles finished 24th, Kristen Fellows was 25th and Hattie Shelton was 27th for the Saints, who were fifth as a team in the race. The men's Nordic team was sixth with Eric Tremble's 25th place finish leading the way. Tremble toured the men's course, also 10 kilometers, in 34:09.9 while Zach Stegeman was 26th in 34:11.5. Brent Freeman finished 32nd in 35:43.3 and Dustin Williamson was 36th in 36:28.6. The alpine teams did not have as strong a day in the giant slalom. The Saint men were seventh in the giant slalom while the women finished ninth. Zach Lambert's 22nd in a two run time of 1:49.04 led the men with Chad Jacob 27th in 1:51.96 and Brian Welch 28th in 1:53.29. Tim Witman was 36th and Josh Rothman was 40th. Kami Koleva was 38th to lead the Saint women in 1:59.13 while Melissa Henrichon was 45th, and Julie Zingerline, who had a strong second run with a 58.32 clocking, was 49th overall after difficulty on the first run. The UNH Carnival will conclude with a mixed Nordic relay and slalom competition for both men and women. SAINTS FINISH SEVENTH OVERALL IN ABBREVIATED SKI CARNIVAL While severe cold on Saturday resulted in the cancellation of first day competition in the St. Lawrence University Winter Carnival ski events at Lake Placid, conditions improved on Sunday as the Saints finished seventh overall in the final team standings. Sixth place finishes by both the men's and women's Nordic teams highlighted the Saint performances. Liz Hollenback had the top SLU finish as she was 11th in the 7.5 kilometer freestyle Nordic competition in a time of 26:35.5. Tessa Benoit of Vermont won the race in 24:05.6. Kate Underwood was the second Saint finisher and also scored NCAA points with a 15th place finish in 27:16.8 while Hattie Shelton was the third Saint finisher and scorer in 27th in 28:21.4. Melissa Hayman was 28th while Kristin Fellows was 31st and Brenna Knowles finished 38th. In the men's Nordic competition, Eric Tremble's 17th place finish led the Saints as he toured the 15 kilometer course in 43:42.4. Zach Stegeman was 25th in 45:12.3, and Eric Pepper finished 36th in 47:05.8. Ben Hicks was 46th, Brent Freeman 47th and Spencer Newell finished 48th. Dave Stewart of Vermont won the race in 41:05.4. In Sunday's alpine competition, both the Saint men's and women's teams finished eighth in the giant slalom. Melissa Henrichon led the Saint women with a 35th place finish with runs of 1:28.60 and 1:30.33. Freshman Emmy Jervey was 38th and Andrea Ferri was 41st to complete the Saint scoring. Josh Rothman's 21st place finish with runs of 1:15.92 and 1:16.35 led the Saint men. Chad Jacob finished 29th, Brian Welch 31st, Zack Lambert 36th and Takeshi Tarui was 41st for the Saint men. MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SKIING, WOMEN'S HOCKEY HIGHLIGHT ST. LAWRENCE WINTER CARNIVAL AT LAKE PLACID St. Lawrence University's 2000 Winter Carnival Weekend in Lake Placid will feature some of the nation's best teams and competitors in both men's and women's skiing and in women's ice hockey Saturday and Sunday. The Saints will host Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association rivals in alpine competition at Whiteface Mountain Saturday and Sunday with Nordic events running concurrently at the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Nordic complex. St. Lawrence's Division I women's ice hockey team, currently ranked seventh nationally, will join Western Collegiate Hockey Association entry Minnesota-Duluth, Cornell of the ECAC and Concordia University from Montreal in a two-day High Peaks Hockey Classic tournament at the Olympic Arena. Competition in skiing will begin with the men's giant slalom to be followed by the women's giant slalom at Whiteface with the first run for men beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The women's race will follow the men's race with the second run taking place in early afternoon. The races, on the Parkway trail, will include skiers from the University of Vermont, University of New Hampshire, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Dartmouth, St. Michael's and Williams colleges and Harvard University in addition to the Saints. Nordic competition, featuring skiers from the same teams, will begin with a 20 kilometer men's freestyle race at 10 a.m. at Mt. Van Hoevenberg with a 15 kilometer women's race to follow. Saturday's athletic events will conclude with the women's hockey tournament with Cornell playing Concordia in the 5 p.m. first game and the Saints taking on Minnesota-Duluth in the 8 p.m. second game. Sunday's skiing competition will begin with a 9 a.m. women's 3x5 classic Nordic relay at Mt. Van Hoevenberg with a men's 3x5 classic relay to follow at 10:30 a.m. The alpine teams will compete in slalom on the Wilderness trail at Whiteface with the women's first run scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and the men to follow. The consolation game for women's ice hockey will be played at noon at the Olympic Arena with Saturday's winners meeting for the High Peaks Hockey Classic Championship at 3 p.m.
