Saint Facilities, Talent Among the State's Best

St. Lawrence University's men's indoor and outdoor track and field teams have been among the top programs in New York State for the past several years and will continue to excel with one of the finest collegiate indoor and outdoor track facilities in the East.

The Merrick-Pinkard track complex (top left) was the host site for the 2003 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships and has been the site for New York State Collegiate Track and Field Conference Championship meets as well as Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association and Liberty League championship meets. Newell Field House (right), which opened in the fall of 2001, includes an 8-lane 200 meter track and is home for the Saint indoor program. It has also been the site of NYSCTC and UCAA championship meets. Most recently, St. Lawrence hosted the 2007 NYSCTC Championships.

The Saints enjoyed tremendous success on the indoor track in 2007, winning both the Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championship and the NYSCTC Indoor Championship. The Saints also reached a No. 16 ranking nationally by the NCAA Power Rankings. Saints head coach Mike Howard and his staff were named NYSCTC Coaching Staff of the Year and Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year for the Saints indoor success 2007. St. Lawrence completed the 2007 league sweep when they won the outdoor title in April of 2007.

One of the top teams in New York State for several years, St. Lawrence won the 1987 and 1988 outdoor championships and the 2002 and 2003 indoor championships. It also finished second in the NCAA Indoor Championships in both 1987 and 1988 and were third outdoors in 1987.

The Saints were UCAA Outdoor Champions in three consecutive years, 2004, 2003 and 2002. The Saints were also UCAA Indoor Champions in 2003 and 2002. The men were also second indoors in 2004. The UCAA became the Liberty League in 2004-2005.

The Saints track and field and cross country programs have produced 73 All America performances and nine men's individual national champions. Tim McCrossen and Jukka Tammisuo, both members of the Saint Athletic Hall of Fame, are the most celebrated among men's track standouts with McCrossen earning All America honors 11 times and winning the NCAA indoor 400 and outdoor 100 meters in 1987. Tammisuo was 1987 NCAA Division III cross country champion and won the 1500 meters in the indoor championships. He earned All America status seven times during his Saint career.

St. Lawrence has been well represented on the national level in recent years as well. The Saints sent six athletes to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship in 2003 and four athletes to the 2003 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

Decathlete Zane Buckingham represented the Saints in the 2006 Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship and was named an All American. Most recently, freshman Alyssa Pirinelli and senior Geoff Grambo competed in the2007 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships with Pirinelli taking a third place finish.

Marty Dumoulin is the first athlete in Saint history to earn All America honors in each of the three seasons during a single academic year as he was All America in cross country and indoor and outdoor track in 1986-87. That feat was duplicated by Kris Enwright in 2002.
