PERZANOSKI DEFENDS NYSCTC PENTATHLON TITLE
Feb. 24: St. Lawrence University senior Nick Perzanoski was in the top five in four of five events and successfully defended his New York State Collegiate Track Conference pentathlon championship at the Newell Field House on Saturday.
The multi-event competition included 21 men and was the first event of the 2008 NYSCTC Indoor Track and Perzanoski, who won a year ago with 3230 points, improved his point output by 213 points in this year’s event. Points are awarded based on performance in the five-event competition which includes the 55 hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and concludes with the 1000 meters. Perzanoski’s win gave the Saint men’s team 10 points toward the NYSCTC team title. Buffalo State which had the second and third place performers in Tim Diegelman (3266 points) and Ray Shadowens (3216), earned 17 points.
The Saint senior won the long jump competition, earning 686 points with a 6.45 meter jump. He was second in the 55 hurdles in 7.95 points and earned 863 points as event winner Shadowens of Buffalo State set an event point record, earning 905 points with a time of 7.79 seconds. Perzanoski was eighth in the shot put with a 10.32 meter throw, earning 502 points, tied for third with a 1.83 meter high jump worth 653 points and finished fifth in the 1000 meters in 2:52.82, earning 736 points.
Saint freshman Chris Funch finished 17 th in his first collegiate pentathlon while sophomore Terrance Fox was 18 th.
Fox (pictured on right with Funch) won the 1000 meters in 2:36.52, earning 912 points while Funch was second in that race in 2:36.94, worth 908 points.
SAINTS TOUGH TO BEAT AT DENEAULT INVITATIONAL
Feb. 23: Rookie Dan Ramsey and senior Erik Donohoe had a 1-2 finish in the mile to lead the St. Lawrence University men’s indoor track team at the Marc Deneault Memorial Invitational Saturday afternoon, which was hosted by Cornell University. The meet featured several Division II teams, host Cornell, a Division I program and top Division III teams.
Ramsey took top honors in the event with a time of 4:18.99, while Donohoe followed closely behind, crossing the line at 4:19.87.
Junior Mark Burnham and senior David Lloyd finished second and third, respectively, in the 1000-meters, with Burnham clocking it at 2:32.08, with Lloyd on his heels, finishing the race with a 2:33.20.
Senior Geoff Grambo earned a second place finish in the shot with a 15.44 throw, while classmate Schuyler Heiss came in fifth place in the 400-meters, clocking in at 51.44, a season-best time.
Heiss added a seventh and Devaun McFarland was eighth in the 200 meters while Joe Shehata finished seventh in the 500 meters. Geoff Millard was seventh in the 800, the Saints were fourth in the 4x400 relay and seventh in the 4x800 relay and Eric Jones was fifth with a 16.25 meter throw and Jesus Ruiz was eighth in the wegith throw and Gabe McBride finished ninth in the shot.
