PERZANOSKI WINS SECOND STRAIGHT DECATHLON TITLE April 29: Nick Perzanoski got off to a great start in defense of his New York State Collegiate Track Conference decathlon title, but had to contend with poor weather as well as the rest of the field on Monday. While his point production did fall off with a combination of the weather and more difficult events, he met NCAA provisional qualifying standards, winning the event with 6304 points.
It was the fourth straight multi-event title for the Saint senior, who has won the last two indoor pentathlon
championships in addition to two straight decathlons.
Perzanoski had an outstanding opening day, winning two of the five events contested on day win and finishing in the top three in the other three events. He compiled 3513 points on day one, a NCAA-qualifying point pace, and had a 205 point lead on Cortland’s Noah Rappahan heading into day two.
Points in the decathlon are awarded based on time or distance in the ten events. Perzanoski earned 732 points and was third in the 100 meters with a 11.60 clocking, won the long jump with a 6.73 meter leap worth 750 points and picked up 533 points with a 10.79 meter throw, finishing third, in the shot put. He earned 679 points with a tie for second at 1.86 meters in the high jump and got a big point boost with a 49.90 clocking in the 400 meters, earning 819 points.
He opened Monday’s competition with a win in the 110 hurdles in 15:99, earning 734 points, finished fifth in the discus with a 29.40 meter throw worth 453 points, cleared 3.50 meters in the pole vault for 482 points, threw the javelin 40.37 meters for 447 points and wrapped up the championship with a win in 4:40.82, worth 675 points, in the 1500 meters.
Perzanoski’s victory gives the Saints ten points toward the team title in the NYSCTC Outdoor Championships which will be run at Rochester Friday and Saturday.
