VETERANS SHINE AS SAINTS KICK-OFF INDOOR TRACK SEASON

Dec. 8: The St. Lawrence University men’s track and field team kicked off the 2007-08 Indoor season on Saturday as they played host to the “Saint Holiday Relays” in the Newell Field House. Anchored by a corps of veteran returnees including senior Nick Perzanoski and junior Geoff Grambo, the Saints had a very solid opening meet.

Five teams competed in this year’s Holiday Relays, including the Saints, Cortland State, Ithaca College, Oswego State and Plattsburgh State. Though the meet isn’t scored by team, St. Lawrence had several impressive individual performances throughout the day.

Perzanoski, who figures to be one of the key point-scorers for the Saints during his senior campaign, won both the long jump (6.12m) and the high jump (1.91m).

A pair of rookies, Dan Ramsey and Brandon Kenny, finished 1-2 in the 1 mile run with times of 4:27.31 and 4:32.10, respectively. St. Lawrence also had senior John Ostler tally a win in the 5000m run with a time of 15:49.89.

The Scarlet and Brown also looked solid in the throwing events, as Grambo earned a win in the shot put with an ECAC Qualifying toss of 14.45m to pick up the win. Sophomore Gabe McBride finished 2nd to Grambo in the event with a throw of 13.50, while his fellow classmate Eric Jones finished 2nd in the weight throw with a distance of 13.92m.

“We’re excited about the season, as we return several of our veteran point scorers,” said St. Lawrence University Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Mike Howard. “Our team seems to be picking up where we left off last year, which puts us ahead of the bar going into the season.”

The Holiday Relays are the Saints’ lone event this semester, as the men’s track team will next compete after the Winter Recess on January 19th when they host the St. Lawrence Open.

SAINTS OPEN INDOOR SEASON SATURDAY

Dec. 6: St. Lawrence University’s men’s indoor track team will open its 2007-08 season with the Saint Holiday Relays at the Newell Field House on Saturday, and the Saints are looking for another outstanding season.

Defending Liberty League and New York State Collegiate Track Conference champions, the Saints return a number of key performers from last season and have added some young talent with outstanding potential.

The Saints will run the first three meets of the indoor season at home and will also host the Liberty League Championships, the NYSCTC Pentathlon Championships and the NYSCTC Championships.

Seniors Erik Donohoe, Nick Perzanoski, Geoff Grambo, Schulyer Heiss and David Lloyd are among the key returning veterans for the Saints and all have performed well in big meets. Donohoe, who was an All America in cross country this past fall, runs everything from the 800 to the 5000 indoors and was second in both the 3000 and 5000 in the NYSCTC indoor championships last season and is the defending Liberty League 5000 champion. Perzanoski is the defending NYSCTC pentathlon champion and is a consistent scorer in the hurdles and jumps while Grambo, who missed the spring season last year with an injury, is the defending Liberty League champion in the shot and was second indoors in the NYSCTC championships. Heiss scored in both championships last season in the 500 and 400 and was Liberty League champion in the 400 while Lloyd was state champion in the 1000.

Other key returnees for the Saints included middle distance runners John Ostler, sophomore middle distance runner Terrance Fox, who was Liberty League champion in the mile, junior sprinter Jay Thornhill, NYSCTC and Liberty League 200 meter champion and sophomore Devaun McFarland, who contributes both in the sprints and jumps. Senior Craig DiGiovanni and junior Kevin Burrall are also strong sprinters while Mark Burnham, Geoff Millard and Jeremy Beaudette will contribute in the middle distance and distance events as well as on relay teams.
