CORNELIUS MISSES FINALS IN NCAA LONG JUMP

May 23: St. Lawrence University junior Ohene Cornelius jumped 6.77 meters (22-2.5) in the NCAA long jump championship contested at Merrick-Pinkard Track on Friday, but missed advancing to the championship round.

Freshman Dion Ballentine of Carthage College won the event with a 7.38 meter jump (24-2.5).

SAINTS PLACE FOUR IN NCAA FIELD; CHAMPIONSHIP STARTS THURSDAY

May 19: St. Lawrence University will be represented by four athletes when the 2003 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships get underway at the Saints' Merrick-Pinkard Track and Field Complex on Thursday.

Saint seniors Alissa Bibb and Kate DePuy earned spots in the field as did junior Morgan Doherty and junior Ohene Cornelius (left) earned a spot in the men's long jump.

Bibb will compete in the 400 hurdles and the long jump while DePuy made the field in the long jump and has the sixth best jump among qualified competitors. Doherty, who won the ECAC 3000 steeplechase championship Friday has the eighth fastest time this season in that event and will run in Friday's race.

Bibb and DePuy will open their competition on Thursday with the long jump scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Cornelius, who earned his spot with a second place finish at the ECAC championships will compete on Friday.

The meet will bring nearly 700 athletes plus coaches, support personnel and fans to Canton with competition starting at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. A pre-meet banquet for athletes and coaches will be held at the Newell Field House on Wednesday night to officially open the championship.

CORNELIUS NEARS NCAA FIELD, SAINTS SIXTH AT ECAC

May 16: Ohene Cornelius leapt 7.11 meters (23-4) finishing second in the ECAC Championship long jump and earned provisional qualifying status for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships which will be held at the Merrick-Pinkard Track Thursday through Saturday.

Cornelius' distance places him in the top 15 nationally and could land a spot in the championship with the fields to be determined Sunday night.

Other scoring performances for the Saint men, who were sixth as a team, included a third by Zane Buckingham in the decathlon with 5770 points, a fourth in the hammer with a 52.05 (170-9) throw by Bryan Tolcser and a fifth in 4:00.49 in the 1500 by Adam Van Nortwick.

Eamonn O'Neil added a sixth in the discus with a 45.37 meter throw while Matt Migonis was sixth in the 10,000 meters in 32:24.48 and Rob Ames added a sixth with a 6.61 meter leap in the long jump.

SAINTS FINISH SECOND IN NYSCTC CHAMPIONSHIPS

May 3: Impressive victories by sophomore Jeff Homer and freshman Adam Van Nortwick highlighted day two of the New York State Collegiate Track Conference championships for the Saint men at the Merrick-Pinkard track complex.

The Saints finished second in a 14-team field as Rensselaer won the championship with 204 points, the Saints had 137 and Geneseo was third with 103.

Homer won the 400 meters in 49.84 seconds, pulling away from the field out of the final turn to win by over 1.5 seconds. Van Nortwick (left) outkicked Ithaca's Mike Styczynski coming off the final turn to win the 1500 meters in 3:59.64 winning by .17 second in one of the meet's most exciting races. The Saints also had an apparent win in a dramatic 4x400 relay as Homer took the lead on the backstretch and then held off a Rochester runner at the finish, but the team was disqualified for an early cut-in on an earlier leg.

Other scoring performances for the Saints included a fourth by Eamonn O'Neil in the shot with a 14.54 throw (47-8.5), a fourth by Ben Frisch with a 1.85 meter (6-0.75) high jump an da fourth by Rob Ames in the 110 high hurdles in 15.69 seconds. The Saint 4x100 relay team of Jason Grunert, Steve Coffin, Kyle Bigness and Homer finished fourth in 43.65 seconds.

Steve Coffin was third in the 400 hurdles in 56.01 seconds. Homer also scored with a seventh place finish in the 200 meters. O'Neil added a second place finish in the discus with a throw of 44.53 meters (146-1) and Bryan Tolcser was sixth with a 41.56 meter throw (136-4). Zane Buckingham finished sixth in the triple jump with a 13.10 (42-11.75) with Ames finishing 8th with a 13.02 meter series (42-8.75). Brian Hetzel finished eighth in the high jump, Byron Malcom was eighth in the 400 and Ryan Pollock was sixth and Jon Kent seventh in the 800 meters. Jon French was seventh and Matt Migonis eighth in the 5,000 meters.

SAINTS SECOND AFTER FIRST DAY OF NYSCTC MEET

May 2: A strong performance in the long jump led by Ohene Cornelius' win produced 25 points and a win in the 4x800 relay highlighted day one of competition in the New York State Collegiate Track and Field Conference championships for the Saint men's team.

The Saints are second to Rensselaer after the first day of competition with Rochester a distant third. RPI leads with 82 points while the Saints have 63 and RPI 33 with 11 teams scoring first day points.

The team of Jon Kent, Adam Van Nortwick, Andy Dana and Ryan Pollock ran a 7:51.96 as Van Nortwick and Dana opened a good lead and Pollock finished strong to hold it with Rochester finishing second in 7:52.64.

Cornelius improved his own track record with a 6.98 meter (22-11) jump while Zane Buckingham finished third with a 6.60 meter (21-8) jump, Brian Hetzel was fourth at 6.56 meters (21-6.25) and Ben Frisch was fifth with a 6.55 meter jump (21-6) for the big point total in that event.

Matt Migonis turned in a strong performance in the 10,000 meters, finishing second in 31:27.02, meeting NCAA provisional qualifying status. Jon French added a fifth place finish in that event in 32:18.07.

Other Friday final results for the Saints included a third in the hammer by Bryan Tolcser at 51.50 meters (168-11). Brockport's Jesse Doty set a facility record with a winning throw of 57.77
(189-04). Jason Frank added a eighth in the pole vault with a leap of 4.11 meters.

Rob Ames advanced to the finals with the second best time in the 110 meter hurdles while Jeff Homer earned a spot in Saturday's finals in both the 400 and 200, running the fastest time of the day with a 49.44 in the 400. Byron Malcom also advanced to the finals in the 400.

 

BUCKINGHAM FOURTH IN DECATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP

April 28: St. Lawrence University freshman Zane Buckingham finished fourth in his first New York State Collegiate Track and Field Conference decathlon championship at Ithaca College Saturday and teammates Jon Kent and Garrett Coffin finished sixth and eighth to earn points in the NYSCTC championship.

The championship meet will continue Friday and Saturday at SLU's Merrick-Pinkard track complex. Buckingham, the first-day leader of the decathlon, finished with 5696 points in the ten-event competition, which is a St. Lawrence record. He had top four finishes in seven of the ten events including a tie for first in the long jump and a second in the 1500 meters.

Kent, who finished with 5524 points, was the winner of the 1500 and had the highest single-event point total with a time of 4:20.56, worth 808 points.

SAINTS WIN NINE EVENTS AT RIT INVITATIONAL

April 26: St. Lawrence athletes won nine events at the non-scoring RIT Track and Field Invitational Saturday, led by jumper Ben Frisch who captured the titles in both the long jump and high jump.

The Saints, who rested their multi-event athletes who will compete in the New York State Collegiate Track and Field Conference decathlon championships at Ithaca on Sunday and Monday, will host the NYSCTC championships at the Merrick Pinkard Track complex Friday and Saturday.

Frisch jumped 6-2 to win the high jump with teammate Brian Hetzel finishing second and had a winning leap of 6.51 meters in the long jump.

Other Saint winners at Rochester included Jeff Homer, who won the 400 in 50.49 seconds and was fourth in the 200; Ryan Pollock, who won the 800 in 1:57.47 with Jon Kent third and Andy Dana, who won the 1500 in 4:01.86. Sam Perry added a win in the 5000 meters in 15:59.30 while Zane Buckingham was first in the 400 hurdles in 57.66 seconds.

Eamonn O'Neil won the discus with a 45.45 throw, ws second in the shot put and fourth in the hammer while Bryan Tolcser won the hammer with a 49.60 throw.

SAINTS STRONG IN TWILIGHT MEET

Jeff Homer and Eamonn O'Neil won two events each and junior Ohene Cornelius made his return to competition from an injury an auspicious one as he won the long jump with a Merrick-Pinkard track record 6.91 meter jump as one of the highlights of the Saint Twilight Meet Friday night.

Homer won the 400 meter dash in 51.5 with Steve Coffin second in 51.8 and Byron Malcom third in 52.0 and came back to win the 200 in 22.97 with Andy Steele third.

O'Neil won the shot put with a 14.01 meter throw and completed his double with a win in the discus, throwing 46.60 meters with Ryan Gagne second.

Jason Grunert won the 100 meter dash in 11.51 seconds, leading a Saint sweep of the top three spots with Zane Buckingham second at 11.65 and Andy Steele third in 11.66. Steele joined Homer, Steve Coffin and Rob Ames on the winning 4x100 relay team which ran 43.73.

Aaron Ladd was the winner of the 10,000 meters in 35:36.18 with Kevin Emblidge second. Ames won the 110 high hurdles in 16.24 seconds with Garrett Coffin second. Bryan Tolcser won the hammer throw with a 50.48 meter throw, meeting NCAA provisional standards while O'Neil was second. Dennis Leahy added a win with a 12.42 series in the triple jump. . Brian Hetzel added a win for the Saints in the high jump with a 1.85 meter leap with Gagne finishing second.

Other top three finishes for the Saint men included a second by Ali Piascik and a third by Garrett Coffin in the pole vault, a third by Piascik in the long jump; a second by Jamie Kennedy in the javelin and a third by Leahy in the 400 hurdles. Ryan Pollock was second in the 800 meters and Matt Burton-Kelly was second and Eric Seyes third in the steeplechase. Matt Migonis was second and Andy Dana third in the 5000 meters

 

AMES WINS TWO EVENTS, FRENCH IS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AT UCAA

St. Lawrence University's men's track team had seven individual champions and a relay win in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association championships at Rensselaer Saturday afternoon.

The Saints, who were without senior star Kris Enwright, who is out with an injury, won the outdoor championship for the second straight year and joined the Saint women in a sweep of the UCAA track titles for the second consecutive year as well. SLU also won the UCAA indoor championships earlier this year.

Jon French earned UCAA rookie of the Year honors for his performance in the meet which included a win in the 5000 meters in 15:42.98 and a second place finish in the 10,000 meters. Saint coach Mike Howard was named UCAA Coach of the Year for both men's and women's track.

Rob Ames was a double winner for the Saint men as he won the 110 high hurdles in 15.99 seconds and the long jump with a 6.84 meter leap. Other Saint champions included Jeff Homer with a 50.51 win in the 400 meters, Adam VanNortwick with a 4:11.17 win in the 1500 meters, Matt Migonis with a 32:32.4 win in the 10,000 and Andy Dana with a 10:01.57 win in the steeplechase. The Saints also won the 4x800 relay in 8:21.19 with a team of Jon Kent, Dana, Kevin Lozeau and Ryan Pollock and the 4x400 relay with a team of Homer, Andy Steele, Byron Malcom and Zane Buckingham.

Homer added a third and Steele was fourth in the 200 while Steele was third and Malcom fourth in the 400. Dana was fourth in the 800 and Pollock was third and Migonis fourth in the 1500. Migonis also added a third with Aaron Ladd fourth in the 5,000 meters. Steve Coffin was second in the 400 hurdles with Ames fourth. Ryan Gagne was second and Brian Hetzel was third in the high jump while Buckingham was third and Ben Frisch fourth in the long jump.

Buckingham was second, Dennis Leahy third and Ames fourth in the triple jump while Eamonn O'Neil was third in the shot and second in the discus, Bryan Tolcser was second in the hammer and Hetzel added a second in the javelin.

DMR FINISHES SIXTH AT NATIONALS

Mar. 14: The Saint distance medley relay team of Andy Dana, Jon Kent, Kris Enwright and Matt Migonis earned All America status with a sixth place finish in 10:16.03 at the NCAA indoor championships at DePauw on Friday evening.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the race in 10:10.07, a three second vicotry over Wisconsin Lacrosse in a highly competitive field. The Saints, who had the fourth best time in the country this year at 10:02.98 in the ECAC championships, where hindered when Dana was tripped early in the race and couldn't make up all the lost time.

 

BIBB, DEPUY, MEN'S DMR AT NATIONALS

Mar. 11: Six members of the Saint track teams will compete in the 2003 NCAA Division III Indoor National Track and Field Championships which get underway at DePauw University on Friday.

Seniors Alissa Bibb and Kate DePuy will represent the women's team with Bibb competing in both the long jump and 55 hurdles and DePuy in the long jump while the men's Distance Medley Relay team of Andy Dana, Jon Kent, Kris Enwright and Matt Migonis will compete in that event on Friday.

Bibb will run in the hurdle preliminaries on Friday and will also compete in the long jump where DePuy has the third best jump in the country this year with a 5.87 meter leap.

The men's relay team has a 10:02.98 clocking which is fourth best in the country this year.

AMES WINS PENTATHLON, 4X800 RELAY WINS SAINTS FINISH THIRD IN ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Mar. 9: St. Lawrence University’s men’s track team had two championship performances and went on to finish third behind the College of New Jersey and Rensselaer in the 44-team ECAC Indoor Championships at Tufts.

Saint sophomore Rob Ames and freshman Zane Buckingham finished first and second in the penthathlon and the 4x800 relay team won a championship to highlight the meet for the Saint men. Ames won the multi-event title with 3503 points and also added a ninth in the long jump. The 3503 points is a Saint record and Ames had personal best performances in four of the five events. Buckingham was second in the pentathlon with 3342 points and was 14th in the long jump.

The 4x800 relay team of Andy Dana, Matt Migonis, Jon Kent and Kris Enwright won that event in 7:56.66 while the Saint Distance Medley Relay team of Dana, Kent, Enwright and Migoinis took second in 10:02.98 and set a new SLU record.

Other top ten performances for the Saints included a seventh in 4:01.63 by Dana in the 1500 with Migonis eighth in 4:01.77; a seventh in the pole vault at 4.40 meters by Jason Frank; a seventh in the 800 by Enwright in 1:54.65 and an eighth in the weight by Bryan Tolcser with a 16.02 meter throw.

Eamonn O’Neil added an 11th in the shot while Jeff Homer was tenth and Kent 11th in the 500 meters.

ENWRIGHT IS RUNNER OF THE MEET, SAINTS REPEAT AS INDOOR CHAMPS

Mar. 1: The St. Lawrence University men’s indoor track and field team capped the New York State Collegiate Track Conference championship meet with a win in the 4 x 800 meter relay, and the 4 x 400 relay placed third to close out Rensselaer and win their second consecutive indoor title.

Kris Enwright, named the Male Runner of the Meet by the NYSCTC coaches, capped a strong day by anchoring the 4 x 800, holding off a late charge by Rensselaer to break the field house record by one hundredth of a second. Enwright won the 1,500 by passing the field with two laps remaining, placed third in the 800, and was on the Saints’ third place distance medley relay on Friday night.

The Saints finished with 127 points, 12 ahead of second place Rensselaer. Ithaca was third with 117, and Geneseo finished fourth in the men’s team standings with 79 points.

Dwaine Alleyne led Rensselaer, breaking the field house records in the 55 hurdles and the triple jump to repeat in both events. Alleyne was selected as the Field Event Performer of the Meet. Saint head coach Mike Howard was voted the Coach of the Year.

Rob Ames was another top performer for the Saints, finishing third in the 55 hurdle finals a day after breaking his own school record in the event. He was also third in the long jump on Friday night, fourth in the pentathlon last weekend, and sixth in the triple jump today.

Brian Tolscer won the 35# weight throw and Eamonn O’Neil was third in the shot put to lead the Saint throwers. Jeff Homer was third in the 500, Andy Dana and fourth in the 1,000 and Andy Steele was sixth in the 400. Matt Migonis and Jon French, who finished in second and fourth respectively in the 5,000 yesterday, came back to placed fourth and sixth in the 3,000 today.

Brian Hetzel had a second in the long jump and a fourth in the high jump yesterday, and Zane Buckingham was fourth in the long jump, fifth in the triple jump, and sixth in the pentathlon last weekend.

Ithaca’s Jim Ravener set a meet and field house record in the 500 and helped the distance medley relay break both records as well. Mike Styczynski also set a field house record for Ithaca in the 3,000.

AMES, HETZEL LEAD SAINTS TO LEAD AFTER DAY ONE OF NYSCTC CHAMPIONSHIP

Feb. 28: The St. Lawrence University men’s track and field team holds a 14-point lead in the team standings, and the women’s team sits in second place, 13 points behind Geneseo after the first day of competition in the New York State Collegiate Track Conference indoor championship in Newell Field House on Friday.

Brian Hetzel led the Saints with a second place finish in the long jump and a fourth place finish in the high jump. Rob Ames and Zane Buckingham finished in third and fourth, respectively in the long jump.

Ames also qualified for the 55 hurdle final, just .03 behind the overall leader after the preliminary rounds, breaking his own school record by .02 seconds. Ames and Jason Wagner both earned spots in Saturday’s final round.

Matt Migonis and Jon French led the Saints distance corps, finishing in second and fourth in the 5,000. Geneseo’s Ted Turner won the race with an NCAA providsional qualifying time of 14:52.60.

The distance medley relay of Andy Dana, Jeff Homer, Jon Kent and Kris Enwright finished in second behind Ithaca, which set a NYSCTC and field house record with a time of 10:05.30.

Eamonn O’Neil was third in the shot put, and Andy Steele qualified for the finals in the 400.

The NYSCTC championship meet will conclude on Saturday afternoon in Newell Field House. Events will begin at 10 a.m.

AMES, BUCKINGHAM SCORE IN NYSCTC PENTATHLON

Feb. 23: Saint sophomore Rob Ames finished fourth and freshman Zane Buckingham was sixth to pick up five points toward the team title in the New York State Collegiate Track and Field Conference championship in the NYSCTC indoor pentathlon championship at Rochester on Sunday.

The Saints will host the remainder of the NYSCTC indoor championship on Friday and Saturday at the Newell Field House.

Ames had the highest single-event point total in the 19-athlete competition as he won the 55 hurdles in 7.98 seconds to record 814 points. He was fifth in the long jump with a 6.31 meter leap, tenth in the shot, tied for ninth in the high jump and was seventh in the 1000 meter run.

Buckingham finished seventh in the hurdles, sixth in the long jump, ninth in the shot, fifth in the high jump and fourth in the 1000 for his scoring finish.

Grad student Brian Hetzel finished seventh and sophomore Ben Frisch was ninth in the event. Frisch was second with a 5.48 meter (21-3.25) jump and Hetzel third at 6.39 meters (20-11.75) in the long jump and Hetzel was among four athletes tied for first at 1.89 meters (6-2.25) in the high jump.

FRENCH WINS DENEAULT MILE

Feb. 22: St. Lawrence freshman Jon French won the mile run in 4:30.42, leading a field of 23 entrants, to highlight the Saint men's performance in the Deneault Invitational at Cornell on Saturday.

Other top five performances for the Saints included a fourth by Rob Ames in 8.69 seconds in the 60 hurdles, a third by Andy Steele in 51.88 in the 400 meters, a fourth by Andy Dana in 2:33.83 and a fifth by Jon Kent in 1:08.13 in the 500 meters. Bryan Tolcser added a fourth in the weight throw with a 15.41 meter heave (50-6.75).

Several members of the Saint team will compete in the NYSCTC Indoor Championships at Rochester Sunday and the Saints will host the NYSCTC Indoor Championships at the Newell Field House beginning Friday afternoon

SAINTS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT UCAA INDOOR TITLE

The St. Lawrence University men’s indoor track team won nine of 16 events and the women’s team won ten events en route to the second consecutive St. Lawrence sweep of the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association indoor track and field championship meet.

The men’s team finished with 209 points, 32 ahead of Rensselaer. The women ran away with the meet, scoring 268 points while Rensselaer finished in second with 136 points. The Saint men won nine events, were second in nine more and had three third place finishes.

Kris Enwright and Adam VanNortwick had record setting days for the men’s team. Enwright’s time of 1:55.53 broke his own meet record by more than two seconds, and rookie Van Nortwick broke teammate Andy Dana’s record in the 3,000, finishing in 8:51.96, more than two seconds faster than Dana’s time last season. Enwright was named the outstanding running event performer while VanNortwick was the UCAA Rookie of the Year and coach Mike Howard was named Coach of the Year for both men and women.

Enwright also won the 1,500 and was on the winning 4x800 relay. Brian Hetzel won the high jump and the long jump for the Saints, Steve Coffin won the 400 and Jon French won the 5,000. Enwright was joined by Ryan Pollock, Matt Migonis and Davis Rogers on the winning 4x800 relay, and the Saints also had the winning 4x400 relay.

Bryan Tolcser added a second in the weight throw and Eamonn O'Neil finished third in the shot. Zane Buckingham was second in
the long jump and added a third in the triple jump while Jason Frank was second in the pole vault.

In running events, Migonis and Dana backed Enwright's win in the 1500 with second and third place finishes and Andy Steele was second behind Coffin in the 400. Rob Ames added a second in the 55 hurdles and Van Nortwick was second in the 800 meters. Migonis was second to French in the 5000 and Dana added a second in the 3000.

The Saints continue the indoor season at the Denault Invitational at Cornell next weekend.

ENWRIGHT IN ON TWO RECORDS, MEN 2ND AT COLGATE MEET

St. Lawrence University's men's track team took five event titles and finished second overall behind Division I Buffalo at the Class of '32 Invitational track meet at Colgate on Saturday.

While Saint coach Mike Howard was more concerned with trying some different things in different events in preparation for the upcoming UCAA and NYSCTC Championship meets, the Saints showed solid depth in their second place showing in the nine-team field.

Saint senior Kris Enwright set a meet record in winning the 800 in 1:53.60 and was part of another meet record on the Distance Medley Relay team which ran 10:16.26. He was joined on the relay team by Jon Kent, Andy Dana and Matt Migonis.

Dana also had an individual title for the Saints, winning the 1500 in 4:19.19 while Brian Hetzell won the high jump at 1.91 meters (6-3) and Bryan Tolcser was champion in the weight with a 15.57 (51-1) throw.

Steve Coffin added a second in the 400 in 51.19 with Andy Steele fourth while Jeff Homer was fifth in the 500 and Ryan Pollock was fourth in the 1000.

Other scorers for the Saints included Rob Ames, who was fifth in the 55 hurdles and sixth in the triple jump, Ben Frisch was fourth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump, Zane Buckingham was fifth in the long jump and triple jump, Jason Frank was third in the pole vault and Eamonn O'Neil was sixth in the shot and fourth in the weight.

The Saints, who will run at the UCAA Championships at Hamilton next Saturday, also scored with a third in the 4x400 relay and a fourth in the 4x800 relay.

DANA, TWO RELAY TEAMS WIN TITLES AT DARTMOUTH MEET

Feb. 1: A one-two finish in the 3,000 meters by Andy Dana and Jon French and wins by the 4x200 and 4x800 relay teams were among the highlights for the Saint men's indoor track team at the Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday.

Dana won the 3,000 in 8:41.85 while French, who like Dana is a graduate of Gouverneur High School, trimmed over 16 seconds off his collegiate best with a second place finish in 8:49.51. The team of Brian Hetzel, Rob Mallory, Andy Steele and Jeff Homer won the 4x200 relay in 1:35.52 while Kris Enwright, Matt Migonis, Adam VanNortwick and Ryan Pollock combined to win the 4x800 in 8:01.72.

Other top five finishes for the Saints included a second in the mile by UCAA track performer of the week VanNortwick in 4:17.38, just .2 seconds off the lead and a fifth Migonis in the same event. Steele was second in 51.56 and Byron Malcom was fourth in 52.49 in the 400 while Jon Kent was third in 1:59.08 in the 800.

Bryan Tolcser added a second in the weight with a 15.30, a personal best. Rob Ames added a second in 8.63 in the 60 hurdles, establishing a new SLU record in that event with Jason Wagner fifth, while Pollock was fifth in the 500 in 1:08.30. Ames added a fourth in the long jump with a 5.28 meter leap while Hetzel was third at 1.88 meters and Ryan Gagne was fourth with a 1.78 meter jump in the high jump. Eamonn O'Neil added a fifth in the shot at 13.88 meters and Jason Frank was fourth in the pole vault at 3.97 meters.

FIELD EVENT PERFORMERS LEAD SAINTS TO HOME INVITE TITLE

January 25: The St. Lawrence University men’s track and field team dominated the jumping and throwing events to pull ahead of an eight-team field in the St. Lawrence Invitational, winning the team title by over 64 points on Saturday afternoon in Newell Field House.

The Saints scored 186.5 points, with Rochester finishing second with 122 points. Buffalo State was third with 84 points, and Geneseo fourht with 82.

Ben Frisch and Eamonn O’Neil each claimed a first- and third-place for the Saints, with Frisch winning the long jump and placing third in the high jump and O’Neil winning the shot put and taking third in the 35# weight throw.

Brian Tolscer won the weight throw, and Brian Hetzel took second in the high jump for the Saints. Jason Frank placed second in the pole vault, and Rob Ames placed second in the 55 hurdles and third in the triple jump.

Kris Enwright and UCAA Track Athlete of the Week Adam Van Nortwick paced the Saints mid-distance and distance runners, with Enwright winning the 800 in 1:55.92, and Van Nortwick claiming the 1,000 in 2:34.68. Matt Migonis placed second in the 5,000, but earned 10 points as the first collegiate runner behind Travis Kuhl, who was running unattached. Andrew Steele added a third-place finish in the 400 for the Saints.

Enwright and Van Nortwick were joined by Andy Dana and Steve Coffin in the distance medley relay, which set a field house record and hit an NCAA provisional mark with a time of 10:10.49.

The Saints will go on the road next weekend for the Dartmouth Invitational.

INDOOR CLASSIC

January 18: The St. Lawrence University men's indoor track and field team opened the spring semester with a dominant performance, netting 18 top-three finishes in 17 events in the seven team SLU Indoor Classic to win the meet by 40 points.

The Saints totaled 186.5 points, while Queens placed second with 146.5. Ithaca was third with 111.5. The Saint men used depth to open an early lead and built the advantage to 30 points through the first 11 events of the meet.

Matt Migonis was first in 4:02.20 and freshman Adam Van Nortwick second in 4:02.28 in the 1500 meters and the Saint 4x800 relay team of Andy Dana, Van Norwick, Jon French and Kris Enwright ran a meet and field house record 7:57.20 for the Saints.

Dana added a win in the 1000 meters in a meet record 2:37.81 while Enwright finished third and Jon Kent was fourth in the 500 meter run. Migonis and French helped cap a strong day for the Saints middle-distance and long-distance corps with a second- and third-place showing the 3,000, taking the top two spots among collegiate competitors.

Ben Frisch and Brian Hetzel tied for second in the high jump at 1.95 meters with Ryan Gagne tied for fourth and Garrett Coffin sixth. Frish added a second place finish in the long jump, and Rob Ames was also second in 8.07 in the 55 hurdles with freshman Zane Buckingham third in 8.2.

Bryan Tolcser added a third in the weight with a 15.18 meter throw, while Eamonn O'Neil was third in the shot put. Jason Frank tied for second in the pole vault, while Buckingham took second in the triple jump.

The Saints capped the day with second-place finishes in the 4x400 and 4x200 relays, with Enwright, Jeff Homer, Andrew Steele and Steve Coffin finishing the 4x400 in 3:30.25 and Rob Mallory, Dennis Leahy, Hetzel and Jason Grunert finishing the 4x200 in 1:36.17.

The Saints will welcome more teams to Newell Field House next weekend for the St. Lawrence Invitational.

SAINTS IMPRESSIVE AT HOLIDAY RELAYS

December 15: The men's competition in the 2002 St. Lawrence Holiday Relays at the Newell Field House Saturday was highlighted by a pair of field house records for the Saint men's track team.

The 4x800 relay team of Andy Dana, Adam Van Nortwick, Kris Enwright and Matt Migonis ran 7:57.22 to trim nearly two full seconds off the Newell Field House record while the sprint medley relay team of Rob Ames, Ben Frisch, Byran Malcolm and Ryan Pollock took 10 seconds off the SLU record and clipped the field house record to 3:40.19 with their victory.

Ames also won the 55 meter hurdles in 8.29 seconds, Frisch won the high jump in a meet record 1.90 meters and Al Piascik won the pole vault in a meet record 3.51 meters. Brian Hetzel won the long jump with a 6.40 meter leap while Saint sophomore Jason Grunert was second in a photo finish with Oswego's Charlie Moon in the 55 with both runner timed in 6.86 seconds.

The Saint team of Van Nortwick, Steve Coffin, Kris Enwright and Migonis also set a meet record in the distance medley relay with a 10:26.09 clocking, Ames set a meet record in the triple jump with a 12.99 meter series and Eamonn O'Neil set a meet record in the shot put with a 13.21 meter throw.

Other Saint winners included Andrew Steele in the 500 meters in 51.97 seconds and the 4x400 relay team of Jon Kent, Malcolm, Zane Buckingham and Ryan Pollock, who won in 3.37.34.
