HEAD COACH JEREMY FREEMAN

A 1996 graduate of St. Lawrence, Jeremy Freeman returned to his alma mater as the men's and women's tennis coach after spending the previous two years as a tennis coach and athletic administrator at Earlham College in Indiana.

 

A member of the men's tennis team as an undergraduate, Freeman has an extensive background in tennis coaching and instruction. He has worked as an assistant tennis professional at Court One Athletic Club in Okemos, MI and spent three years as the head tennis professional for the Lake Placid Resort in Lake Placid, NY.

 

Freeman joined the Saint staff in August of 1999 after serving as the assistant athletic director and men's and women's tennis coach at Earlham College, leading both his teams to their most successful seasons in several years.

 

In the 2004-2005 season, Freeman led the women's team to a 12-6 record and a ranking of 23rd in the ITA Northeast region. The Saints captured three titles at the William Smith Invitational that concludes the season. On the men's side, the Saints finished at 8-11 and took third place in the 2005 Liberty League Championship. In the 2003-2004 season Freeman guided his women's team to their best ever finish in his tenure at 13-3, finishing third in the UCAA Tournament and a North East ITA regional ranking of #16. The men finished their year in impressive fashion with a 14-7 match record, which included a run of 5 consecutive match victories of 7-0. The men's team finished the year third at the UCAA Tournament. Over the past 5 years Freeman has coached 10 ITA Scholar-Athletes and numerous recipients of All-Conference and All-State honors.

 

Freeman was named the 2001 UCAA Men's Tennis Coach of the Year as well as the 2003 UCAA Women's Coach of the Year. In 2004 Freeman was selected by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee as the Bernie McKinnon Coach of the Year Award recipient, which is given to a Saint coach in recognition of outstanding contribution to athletics at St. Lawrence.

 

An instructor in tennis skills classes and wellness at Michigan State where he earned his maters degree in Kinesiology, he also coached varsity boys tennis at Everett High School in Lansing, MI prior to his position at Earlham.

 

 

ASSISTANT COACH TARA HARTNESS

Tara Hartness brings four-years of Division I collegiate playing experience to the Saints coaching staff, having been a four-year letterwinner and a captain of the Wofford College women’s tennis team.

 

Hartness was the number two singles player for the Terriers, and a member of the number one double’s team during her senior season. She captured seven straight decisions in the spring of 2006, and reached a double-digit win plateau as a single’s player during her freshman and junior seasons. In 2003, Hartness was selected to play in the NCAA Regional Tournament.

In the summers of 2003 and 2004, Hartness worked Wofford Tennis Camp, and the following summer joined the coaching staff at John Eagleton's Tennis Training Academy in Greenville, SC. After completing her first season on the Saints coaching staff in 2007, she was employed by the Kinyon/Jones Tennis Camp at Dartmouth College.

Hartness graduated from Wofford College in 2006, earning a B.A. in Sociology and Education. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Education Administration.

 

Hartness will work with both the men’s and women’s programs during the fall and spring seasons in 2007-08.
