SAINTS CLAIM ICE BREAKER TOURNEY

The men's tennis team won the SLU Ice Breaker Tournament with a 28-point total this weekend. Ithaca came in second place with 18 points, it was then RIT (14 points), Hobart (10 points), Hartwick (4 points) and Clarkson (3 points).

Danny Graham claimed A Singles, by defeating Ithaca's Matt Schultz 8-6. Mike Berner took B Singles, downing Kevan Marvasti of Hobart 8-1. It was then the brother duo of Adam Cutter and Aaron Cutter defeating Ithaca's Eric Ritter and Art Roberts in B Doubles by a score of 9-7.

The Saints improve to 9-2 overall on the season.

SAINTS ADVANCE FOUR IN ICE BREAKER TOURNEY

Four members of the Saint men's tennis team have advanced to singles championship play in the SLU Ice Breaker Tournament, which will wrap up today. Doubles action will also resume today, with all four Saint duos competing.

Danny Graham, who received a bye in first-round A Singles, defeated Joe Neely of RIT (8-7, 7-5) and Scott Rubens of Ithaca College (8-6) yesterday. He will face Matt Schultz, also of Ithaca College in today's match. Jay Cutter, who also competed in A Singles yesterday, defeated Ash Vettercourt of Clarkson University (8-2), but then lost to Schultz (8-2).

In B Singles, Mike Berner also received a first-round bye and went on to defeat Ted Kuch of Hartwick College (8-0) and Andy Thompson of RIT (8-1). Berner will face Hobart's Kevan Marvasti in today's match. Carson Roy advanced to second-round B Singles action with a win over Paul Lavigne of Ithaca (8-5), but then fell to Marvasti (8-6).

Aaron Cutter received a double-bye in C Singles, as his match against Matt Rice of RIT was won by default due to an injury. Cutter then posted a 8-5 win over Brian Pare of Ithaca College. Today, he will face Brian Barvian of RIT. Andy DiCicco claimed a 8-1 first-round victory over Hartwick's Nick Rupwani before losing to Barvian (8-2).

In D Singles, both Adam Cutter and Kayle Morrison advanced to second-round action with wins over Nick Labruna of Hartwick (8-6) and Ben Weiss of Hobart (8-5) respectively. Morrison then fell to Ithaca College's Mike Medvin (8-1). Cutter, meanwhile, defeated Clarkson's Josh Wilson (8-1) and will face Medvin in today's match.

Doubles second-round action today will feature Graham and Roy against RIT's Joe Neely and Luke St. Georges in A action. Berner and Jay Cutter will match up against RIT's Gus Epelbaum and Andy Thompson. In B Doubles, DiCicco and Morrison will play Hobart's Tom Cranston and Mark Beaudoin, while Adam and Aaron Cutter will face Dave Winkler and Erin Wendt of Clarkson.

SAINTS THIRD IN UCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

St. Lawrence University's men's tennis team saw its dual match win streak snapped at eight in the semifinals of the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association tournament at Hobart on Saturday as second seeded Rochester pinned a 7-0 defeat on the Saints. The Saints came back to earn third place in the tourney with a 4-3 win over Rensselaer.

SLU, now 9-2, was the third seed in the tournament and advanced to the semifinals with a 4-3 win over Hamilton. The Saints won the doubles point with a sweep against Hamilton as Jay Cutter and Mike Berner won 8-3 at first doubles, Danny Graham and Carson Roy won 8-4 at second doubles and Adam Cutter and Chris Tyler won 8-4 at third doubles. Singles wins by Graham (6-4, 6-2), Berner (6-1, 6-2) and Aaron Cutter (6-2, 6-1) sent the Saints into the semifinal round.

Rochester dominated the Saints with the closest matches an 8-5 loss by Jay Cutter and Berner at first doubles and Aaron Arfman's 6-4, 7-6 win over Jay Cutter at third singles.

In Sunday's third place match the doubles team of Aaron Cutter and Chris Tyler came through with the key win in doubles to earn the Saints the doubles point and it was the deciding point. Cutter and Tyler won 9-7 to go with a 8-2 doubles win by Graham and Roy to give the Saints the point which was pivotal after the teams went 3-3 in singles competition. Graham won 6-2, 6-3 at first singles, Tyler won 6-3, 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker at second singles and Mike Berner won 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to give the Saints third place in the tournament.

SAINTS BEAT UNION 5-2 FOR SEVENTH STRAIGHT

St. Lawrence University's men's tennis team earned the doubles point with victories at second and third doubles and took four of six singles matches to earn their seventh straight victory Saturday afternoon at Union, 5-2.

While Danny Graham lost in straight sets at first singles and Union picked up a win over Carson Roy at fifth singles, the Saints won second, third, fourth and sixth singles to secure the victory. Chris Tyler won 6-2, 6-3 at second singles, Jay Cutter was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at third singles; Mike Berner won 6-3, 6-3 at fourth singles and Aaron Cutter won 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles.

Jay Cutter and Berner were beaten 8-3 in the first doubles match, but Graham and Roy won 8-4 at second doubles and Tyler and Aaron Cutter won 8-2 at third doubles to earn that point. Andy DeCicco and Adam Cutter each won exhibition singles matches, DeCicco winning 6-3, 6-2 and Cutter 6-2, 7-5 and they also teamed up for a 8-2 win in an exhibition doubles match.

SAINTS BLANK ARCH-RIVAL CLARKSON

For the second time this week, the men's tennis team swept their opponent by a score of 7-0. With the blanking over host and arch-rival Clarkson on Wednesday, the Saints are now 6-1 overall.

Jay Cutter claimed first singles 6-2, 7-5 over Steve Tarocci. Mike Berner downed Ash Venkatraman 6-1, 6-2 in second singles. Chris Tyler blanked Marc Lafave 6-0, 6-0 in third singles. Carson Roy took a 6-1, 6-4 victory over John Ebulh in fourth singles. Aaron Cutter defeated Brian Dow 6-3, 6-3 in fifth singles and Andy DeCicco beat David Winter 6-2, 6-3 in sixth singles.

Jay Cutter and Berner took first doubles by a score of 8-2. Kaplan and Adam Cutter claimed second doubles over Ebulh and Matt Rizzolo, also 8-2. DeCicco and Kayle Morrison won in third singles by a score of 8-4.

SAINTS BLANK HOBART TO IMPROVE TO 5-1

The men's tennis team improved to 5-1 overall over the weekend by defeating Hamilton 5-2 on Saturday and then blanking Hobart 7-0 on Sunday.

Danny Graham won 6-3, 6-2 over Andrew Hunt in first singles, Jay Cutter edged Ryan Gillmore (3-6, 7-5, 7-5, 7-2) in second singles, Mike Berner defeated Kevan Marvasti 6-3, 6-0 in third singles, Chris Tyler eased past Tom Cranston 6-0, 6-1 in fourth singles, Carson Roy claimed fifth singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Doug Limbach and Aaron Cutter took sixth singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mark Beaudoin.

In doubles action, Jay Cutter and Berner took a 9-8 (7-3) victory over Hunt and Gilmore in first doubles. Graham and Roy defeated Marvasti and Limbach 8-2 and Tyler and Aaron Cutter defeated Cooper Schmidlapp and Beaudoin 8-0.

SAINTS TURN BACK HAMILTON

St. Lawrence University's men's tennis team swept the doubles matches to earn one point and won four of six singles matches to post a 5-2 win over Hamilton College on Saturday and improve to 4-1 on the season.

The Saints, who will host Hobart Sunday at 11 a.m., won all three pro-set doubles matches as Jay Cutter and Mike Berner won 8-4 at first doubles, Danny Graham and Carson Roy won 8-0 at second doubles and Chris Tyler and Aaron Cutter won 8-4 at third doubles.

Graham won at first singles, beating Ryan Thorpe 6-4, 6-1, but Hamilton took second and third singles as Peter Tucker stopped Jay Cutter 6-2, 6-1 and Ash Pajoohi took a three set match from Mike Berner, dropping the first set 6-4, but coming back with 7-5 and 6-3 wins. The Saints closed out the match with straight set wins at fourth through sixth singles as Tyler beat Phil Cameron of Hamilton 6-1, 6-3, Roy beat Sean Fair 6-2, 6-2 and Aaron Cutter stopped Mike Cleary 6-2, 6-2.

SAINTS EARN 3-1 RECORD AT HILTON HEAD

The men's tennis team kicked off the 2000 season at Hilton Head, South Carolina this past week and lost just one of four matches. Wooster claimed the first match of the trip (5-2), but the Saints went on to defeat NYU (4-3), Wheaton (4-3) and Knox (6-1) to earn a 3-1 overall record.

Danny Graham led the Saints by capturing all four first singles matches. He defeated Rob Ogg (Wooster), Scott Levin (NYU), Chris Abildgaard (Wheaton) and Mike Fang (Knox) in eight straight sets.

Mike Berner went three for four in third singles, losing only to Paul Wiley of Wooster. Chris Tyler defeated two of three opponents in fourth singles, while Aaron Cutter went two for three in sixth singles and earned a victory in his only fifth singles match against Luke Southwarth (Knox).

In doubles action, Graham and Carson Roy won two of three matches and Graham and Adam Cutter claimed another victory in second doubles. Jay Cutter and Berner went two for four in first doubles.

The Saints will host Hamilton College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 1st.
