SAINTS DOMINATE RENSSELAER FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE WIN April 13: The St. Lawrence University men’s tennis picked up its fourth consecutive win on Sunday morning with a 9-0 victory over the Rensselaer Red Hawks in the Newell Field House. The Saints (8-5, 2-1) are 35-1 in the four wins, and finished the weekend with clean sweep of Hobart and RPI.
St. Lawrence ripped through the doubles portion of the match, dropping only two games to Rensselaer. Junior co-captain Jon Satkowski and sophomore Chris McDonald beat Rensselaer’s Ed Cullen and Rohit Kumar 8-1 at the top doubles spot, while first year students Ryan Gillard and Will Cook teamed to defeat Alex Franz and Evan Creer, 8-0.
The Saints built a 3-0 lead heading into singles play when sophomores Chris Rodilosso and Christopher Tamm handled Jamie Fitzgerald and Eric Polesky 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
The Scarlet and Brown continued to cruise, winning all six singles matches in straight sets to pick up the 9-0 win over the Red Hawks. Satkowski knocked off Cullen, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while junior Pete Abernethy followed at the No. 2 spot with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kumar.
McDonald defeated Franz at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0, and Cook overmatched Adam Generale, 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 4 position. Gillard did not drop a game to Creer in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 slot, while senior co-captain Amin Danai completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Joey Redmond.
The Saints will look to carry their recent momentum when they play host to next weekend’s Liberty League Tournament, beginning on Saturday, April 19.
SAINTS ROUT STATESMEN 9-0 IN LIBERTY LEAGUE ACTION April 12: The St. Lawrence University men’s tennis team put forth a dominant performance on Saturday, knocking off Hobart College 9-0 in Geneva, NY. The victory moves the Saints to 7-5 on the season and 1-1 in Liberty League play, while the Statesmen fall to 7-10 (0-2).
St. Lawrence won each of the three doubles matches by the score of 8-1 to take a 3-0 cushion into singles play. Junior Jon Satkowski and sophomore Chris McDonald outplayed Charlie Davis and Harry King at No. 1 doubles, while rookies Ryan Gillard and Will Cook tamed Adam Cohn and Matt Chin in the No. 2 slot.
The sophomore duo of Christopher Tamm and Chris Rodilosso then served up a victory over Zach Schulz and Parker Pedersen at No. 3 doubles for the sweep.
The Saints would put the match away in singles play, as only one match saw three sets. Satkowski was too much for Davis at the No. 1 position, winning 6-1, 6-4, while junior Pete Abernethy, who was the Liberty League’s Co-Performer of the Week last week, knocked off Cohn 6-0, 7-5 at No. 2.
McDonald and Cook added straight set wins at No. 3 and 4 singles over King and Chin, respectively, while senior co-captain Amin Danai handled Will Tucker 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Finally, Gillard found himself down a set to Schulz before battling back and forcing a third set tiebreak. The Keene, NH native came through with an 11-9 win in the tiebreak, winning 6-2, 6-3, 11-9 to give the Saints a 9-0 victory over Hobart.
The Scarlet and Brown will look to sweep the weekend when they host Rensselaer for a conference dual-match tomorrow, Sunday, April 13 in the Newell Field House beginning at 8:30am.
