ST. LAWRENCE FINISHES FALL PORTION OF

SEASON RANKED 16th IN THE EAST

Nov. 9: The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team, which concluded the fall portion of the 2007-08 season with a 2-1 record, has been ranked 16th in the Eastern portion of the ITA Rankings.

The Saints beat Ithaca and Oneonta before falling to Skidmore at the Flower City Invitational in September, with those matches counting for the team's record thus far. Behind the leadership and strong play of junior Jon Satkowski, the Saints are in position to make a move when their spring season begins on March 2nd.

"Our men's team had a solid fall season despite a limited schedule," said Saints head coach Jeremy Freeman. "I think we have both the experience and talent needed to make a run in the spring."

St. Lawrence will host the Ithaca College Bombers in the team's opening dual-match of 2008 on March 2nd.

SATKOWSKI ELIMINATED IN ITA QUARTERS;

McDONALD REACHES CONSOLATION SEMIS

Sept. 29: Junior Jon Satkowski’s run at the 2007 ITA Championships came to an end on Saturday, as the Salisbury Mills, NY native was defeated in the quarterfinals by top-seeded Mikhail Gurevich from NYU 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Chris McDonald, who lost his first round match in the Championship Singles bracket, is still alive in the Consolation Singles draw, as he advanced to the semifinals with an 8-4 win over Skidmore’s Jeremy Hogan.

Satkowski got his tournament underway in style on Friday, earning victories over Lance Dorife of Morrisville 4-6, 6-1 (10-5) and Oneonta’s Shane Raymo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. After defeating Jonathan Yu from the College of New Jersey 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, Satkowski met Gurevich in the quarterfinals where he met his match.

Satkowski and his doubles partner first year student Will Cook won their opening match against Drew’s Rao and Pivor 8-4 before bowing out of the tournament to Rochester’s pairing of Bowman and Kovaleski, 8-5. The only other competing doubles team was sophomore tandem of Christopher Tamm and Chris Rodilosso, who earned a first round win against RIT’s Guzman and Schember, 9-8 (2), before losing the Vassar’s Greg Katz and Max Willner (8-0).

Junior Pete Abernethy was the only other Saint to win his Championship Singles opening round match, as he knocked off Nazareth’s Jon Weaver 6-3, 6-4. However, he fell to Katz in the second round, 6-1, 6-0. Cook was unable to get anything going in his singles match, losing to Willner 6-1, 6-0, while McDonald put up a great fight against the No. 4 seed Mike Mattelson from Vassar. McDonald won the first set 7-6 (0) before dropping the second set 6-3. In the third set tiebreaker, Mattelson was able to hold off McDonald for a 15-13 victory.

However, McDonald’s solid tennis in the first round has carried over to the Consolation Singles draw, where he defeated Ithaca’s Liam Berkowitz 8-1, earning the right to face Hogan. The Manchester, MA native continued to impress with the 8-4 win over Hogan.

The ITA Championships are the final event for the St. Lawrence University men's tennis team in the fall portion of their season. The Saints will begin their spring competitions with a dual-match on March 2nd, 2008 against Ithaca College in Canton, NY.
