DWYER AND WILTSHIRE EARN LIBERTY LEAGUE HONORS

 

May 10: The Liberty League announced the Men’s Tennis end of season awards Tuesday afternoon. Junior Mike Wiltshire and sophomore Matt Dwyer were honored by the league. Dwyer earned Liberty League Singles honors. Wiltshire and Dwyer earned Liberty League Doubles honors.

 

Dwyer, playing at the #1 singles spot for the Saints, posted a 21-7 record this season. He went 8-1 in tournament play, winning the A Flight Singles Draws at both the Fall and Spring St. Lawrence Invitationals. Dwyer defeated three ranked opponents this spring. He beat Payum Payman of Wheaton, ranked 11th in the Northeast and 39th nationally, 6-3, 6-0. The following day, he beat Ethan Branum of Denison, ranked 30th in the Central Region, 6-1, 6-4. Later in the season, Dwyer defeated Peter Pine of Hobart, ranked 17th in the Northeast, 6-3, 6-2.

 

Dwyer and Wiltshire finished the season at 17-8 playing at the #1 spot. They have won seven straight and 10 of their last 12 matches. In tournament play, they went 6-2, winning the A Flight Doubles of the St. Lawrence Icebreaker Invitational in February. Dwyer and Wiltshire went 7-1 against league competition and have twice defeated the #1 doubles pair from Union and Rensselaer, most recently in the Liberty League Championships.

 

SKIDMORE WINS LIBERTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP; SAINTS TAKE THIRD IN 4-3 WIN OVER UNION

 

Apr. 24: Skidmore, the #1 seed, defeated Vassar 4-0 to win the Liberty League Championship. The Saints Men’s Tennis Team battled the Union Dutchmen to a tough 4-3 win in the third-place match of the 2005 Liberty League Tennis Championship Sunday afternoon in Canton, N.Y. Hobart defeated RPI 4-0 to finish fifth in the tournament.

 

In the championship match, Skidmore win at #1 and #2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Russell Cloder and Greg Sher defeated Andrew Ezekowitz and Roger Kueny 8-1 at #1. John Liszewski and Pouya Rebek of Vassar beat Greg Rodiloso and Ibardo Zambrano 8-0 at #3. At #2, Alex Iselin and Stephen Hibino beat Eric Weinstein and Pouya Rebek in a tight 9-7 match to take the doubles point for Skidmore. In singles action, Cloder downed Weinstein 6-0, 6-0 at #1 to give the Thoroughbreds a 2-0 lead. Jack Martin followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #6 over Kueny to push the lead to 3-0. Sher won the match and the championship for Skidmore with his win at #2 over Skartvedt. Sher dropped the first set 6-1 then rebounded to win the second 6-2 and the super-tiebreaker 10-5.

 

For the eighth consecutive match, the Saints opened their match by taking the doubles point. Matt Dwyer and Mike Wiltshire defeated Andrew Draznin and Billy Goldstein 8-2 at #1 doubles. Neil Cutter and George Barbieri followed with an 8-3 win at #2 doubles over Andrew Shohet and Drew Goldstein. Dwyer then beat Draznin 6-3, 6-3 at #1 singles to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. St. Lawrence won at #5 singles and Union then took wins at #2, 3, and 4 singles to knot the match at 3-3. Bill Goldstein defeated Neil Cutter at #4 singles. Goldstein took the first set 6-1 then lost the second 6-3. He then won the super-tiebreaker 12-10. Shohet defeated Barbieri at #3 in a marathon match. Barbieri won the first set 7-5 then Shohet took the second set 7-5. In the super-tiebreaker Shohet edged Barbieri 11-9. Terran Palmer-Angell then pushed that lead to 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Drew Goldstein at #5 singles. Trey Minter beat Mike Wiltshire 6-3, 7-6 (3) at #2 to knot the match at 3-3. The match then came down to the #6 singles spot. Amin Danai defeated Tom Haynes 6-2, 6-2 to win the match for St. Lawrence.

 

In the fifth-place match, Hobart opened by winning the doubles point with wins at #1 and #3 doubles. Peter Pine and Matt Silver downed Mike Heligman and Joe Black 8-3 at #1 and Nick Raho and Derrick Moore beat Ranjeet Minocha and Amadeus Lopez 8-6 at #3. In singles play, Hobart won at #1, 2, and 5 to take the match 4-0. Pine defeated Heligman 6-3, 6-2 at #1 to give the Statesmen a 2-0 lead. Moore beat Black 6-1, 6-2 at #5 and Silver defeated Byrne 6-2, 6-2 at #2 to give Hobart the win.

 

VASSAR AND SKIDMORE TO PLAY FOR LEAGUE TITLE

 

Apr. 23: Vassar, the #2 seed in the Liberty League Men’s Tennis Tournament, advanced to the finals with a 4-2 win over #6 Union on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers will meet Skidmore on Sunday afternoon to play for the Liberty League Championship at St. Lawrence University. The Thoroughbreds defeated the host Saints 4-2 in a tight match that included two super-tie breakers.

 

Union opened the semi-final match with a win at #1 and #3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Dutchmen then took a 2-0 lead with a win at #1 singles. Vassar then won at #2, 3, 4, and 5 singles to win the match and the right to play for the championship. Andrew Draznin and Bill Goldstein of Union defeated Vassar’s Andrew Ezekowitz and Roger Kueny 8-4 at #1 doubles. Eric Weinstein and Ashish Patel of Vassar then beat Union’s Andrew Shohet and Drew Goldstein 8-5 at #2 doubles. Tom Haynes and Trey Minter downed Vassar’s John Liskewski and Pouya Rebek 8-6 at #3 to take the doubles point. In singles action, Draznin defeated Weinstein at #1 singles, 6-3, 6-1 for Union’s final point. Erik Skartvedt beat Minter 6-1, 6-3 at #2. Liskewski defeated Shohet 6-2, 4-6, 10-2 at #3. Ezekowitz beat Bill Goldstein 6-1, 6-3 at #3. Finally, Rebek beat Drew Goldstein 6-4, 6-0 at #4 to give Vassar the 4-2 win.

 

Playing their second match of the day, he Saints opened their semi-final match against the Thoroughbreds with wins at #1 and #2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead. Skidmore, as the #1 seed had a bye in the first round. With Neil Cutter’s win at #4 singles, St. Lawrence took a 2-0 lead in the match. Matt Dwyer and Mike Wiltshire defeated Russell Cloder 8-6 at #1 doubles, followed by a 8-4 win at #2 doubles by Cutter and George Barbieri over Stephen Hibino and Alex Iselin. In singles action, Cutter then defeated Hibino 6-2, 6-3 at #4. Terran Palmer-Angell lost at #5 singles to Tyson Mckechnie 6-1, 6-3 to cut the Saints lead to 2-1. Iselin defeated Barbieri 6-3, 6-1 knotting the match at 2-2 for Skidmore. While at #2 singles, Wiltshire and Greg Sher went to a super-tiebreaker. Sher took the first set 6-2 but Wiltshire rebounded to take the second set 6-2. Sher then won the super-tiebreaker 10-5 and gave Skidmore a 3-2 lead. Then at #1 singles, Dywer and Cloder went to a super-tiebreaker in a marathon match. Dwyer took the first set 6-4 and the Cloder won the second 6-3. Cloder then won the super-tiebreaker 10-5 that decided the match.

 

In the consolation bracket, Hobart defeated Clarkson and will face RPI in the fifth place match Sunday morning. St. Lawrence and Union will meet Sunday in the third place match.

 

ST. LAWRENCE, UNION, VASSAR ADVANCE TO LIBERTY LEAGUE SEMI-FINALS

 

Apr. 23: Vassar, seeded #2 in the Liberty League Men’s Tennis Championship, opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over Clarkson. Union, seeded #6, followed with a 4-2 win over #3 Hobart. Host St. Lawrence, the #4 seed, defeated #5 Rensselaer 5-1 to advance. Vassar will face Union and St. Lawrence will face #1 Skidmore in the semi-finals Saturday afternoon. In the consolation bracket, Clarkson will face Hobart. RPI will face the winner of that match on Sunday.

 

Vassar’s Eric Skartvedt and Ashish Patil beat Clarkson’s Tim Anderson and Jon Fenson 8-0 at #2 doubles. John Liszewski and Pouya Rebek then beat Jon Williams and Brent Carey 8-1 at #3 doubles to put Vassar up 1-0. In singles action, Liszewski beat Justyn Kinsley 6-0, 6-0 at #2, Rebek beat Josh Sanders 6-0, 6-1 at #4 and Patil defeated Kyle Korman 6-1, 6-0 at #6 to give Vassar the 4-0 win.

 

Union took a 2-0 lead over Hobart with wins at #2 and #3 doubles and #3 singles. Andrew Shohet and Drew Goldstein defeated Charlie Davis and Neil Patel of Hobart 8-4 at #2 doubles. Trey Minter and Tom Haynes beat Matt Jacobus and Nick Raho 8-2 at #3 to give Union a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Shohet then won over Davis 6-2, 6-2 at #3 singles to give the Dutchmen a 2-1 lead. Hobart then earned wins at #5 and #2 singles to tie the match at 2-2. Goldstein beat Raho 6-3, 6-3 at #5 followed by Matt Silver’s 7-5, 6-3 win over Minter at #2. Union retook the lead at 3-2 when Bill Goldstein defeated Derrick Moore 6-1, 6-3 at #4. Andrew Draznin then won the match for Union at #1 singles in a super-tiebreaker over Peter Pine. Draznin won the first set 7-6 (7-5) but dropped the second set 6-3. He rebounded to win the super-tiebreaker 10-8 and give Union the win.

 

St. Lawrence had wins at #1 and #2 doubles to open the match with a 1-0 lead for the hosts. Matt Dwyer and Mike Wiltshire defeated Mike Heligman and Joe Black 8-2 at #1. Neil Cutter and George Barbieri gave the Saints their first point with a 8-2 win over Joe Byrne and Aashish Kabra at #2. In singles action, Dwyer won 6-0, 6-1 over Heligman at #1 to give St. Lawrence a 2-0 lead. Byrne cut the lead to 2-1 for RPI with a super-tiebreaker win over Wiltshire at #2 singles. He won the first set 6-1, then dropped the second 6-2, but rebounded to win the super-tiebreaker 10-6. Terran Palmer-Angell gave St. Lawrence a 3-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Black at #5. Barbieri and Cutter then won simultaneously at #3 and #4 to give the Saints a 5-1 win. Barbieri beat Ranjeet Minocha 6-2, 6-3 and Cutter beat Kabra 3-6, 6-3, 10-1 at #4.

 

LIBERTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET NOW AVAILABLE

 

Apr. 21: The bracket for the 2005 Liberty League Men's Tennis Championship has been released. St. Lawrence University will be hosting the event on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24. Play is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.

 

The bracket and schedule is available to the right, below the Liberty League logo. The seeds are as follows: #1-Skidmore; #2-Vassar; #3-Hobart; #4-St. Lawrence; #5-Rensselaer; #6-Union; #7-Clarkson. As the #1 seed, Skidmore receives a bye in the opening round and will play the winner of the St. Lawrence-Rensselaer match. Vassar will play Clarkson and Hobart will play Union.

 

SAINTS DOMINATE IN 7-0 WIN OVER GOLDEN KNIGHTS

 

Apr. 20: The Saints Men’s Tennis team improved to 6-10 overall with a 7-0 blanking of the Clarkson Golden Knights Wednesday afternoon in Newell Field House. The match was the Saints fourth in the last six matches for St. Lawrence.

 

The Saints opened by sweeping all three doubles matches to take the first point of the match. Sophomore Matt Dwyer and junior Mike Wiltshire defeated Joshua Sanders and Tim Anderson 8-0 at the #1 doubles spot. Junior Neil Cutter and sophomore George Barbieri won 8-3 over Justyn Kinsley and Jeff Wysokowski at #2 to remain unbeaten at 5-0. At #3 senior Terran Palmer-Angell and sophomore Drew Kozlowski beat Jonathan Williams and Jon Fenson 8-1.

 

In singles action, Dwyer improved to 10-3 on the season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Anderson at the #1 spot. Wiltshire defeated Kinsley 6-0, 6-0 to improve to 11-4 on the season. Barbieri (10-7) beat Wysokowski 6-0, 6-0 at #3 singles. Cutter won over Sanders 7-5, 6-2 at the #4 spot. At #5 Palmer-Angell defeated Williams 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Matt Sattterly, playing in his first match of the spring, won at #6 over Brent Carey by the score of 6-0, 6-2.

 

St. Lawrence will host the 2005 Liberty League Championships on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24.

 

CLARKSON MATCH MOVED TO NEWELL FIELD HOUSE

 

Apr. 20: The Saints Men's Tennis team's final regular season match, a tune-up for the Liberty League Championhips to be held at SLU this weekend, has been moved from Potsdam to Canton.

 

The match, originally scheduled to be held at Clarkson has been moved due to weather conditions. The match will now be played on the indoor tennis courts inside Newell Field House on the campus of St. Lawrence. The match will begin at 4:00 p.m.

 

St. Lawrence will host the 2005 Liberty League Championships on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24.

 

DWYER NAMED CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK

 

Apr. 18: Sophomore Matt Dwyer was named the Liberty League Co-Player of the Week Monday afternoon. This is the second time this season he has been honored by the league.

 

Dwyer went 2-0 at #1 singles and 2-0 at #1 doubles last weekend as the Saints defeated previously-unbeated RPI 5-2 and then fell to Vassar 4-3. Against RPI, he beat Mike Heligman 6-7, 6-2, 7-5. In doubles action, partnered with Mike Wiltshire, the duo beat Heligman and Black 8-3. Against Vassar on Saturday, Dwyer defeated Eric Weinstein 6-1, 6-3. In doubles play, he and Wiltshire defeated Ezekowitz and Skartvedt 9-7.

 

SKARTVEDT WINS DRAMATIC THREE-SETTER AS VASSAR DEFEATS SAINTS 4-3

 

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - In a critical Liberty League tennis match between host Vassar College and St. Lawrence, the Brewers came away with a dramatic 4-3 victory on the heels of four singles victories after St. Lawrence secured a point after taking two of three doubles matches.

The Brewers, playing without the services of senior Roger Kueny at 6th singles, got a huge victory from senior Ashish Patil at the sixth position, who defeated Amin Danai in three tough sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. The clinching point for Vassar, however, came from senior Erik Skartvedt at second singles, who defeated SLU's Mike Wiltshire in a dramatic three-setter, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.  The match was tied at 3-3 with the Skartvedt-Wiltshire match the deciding point.

 

SAINTS END ENGINEERS WIN STREAK IN 5-2 WIN

 

Apr. 15: The Saints Men’s Tennis team defeated the Rensselaer Engineers 5-2 in Troy, N.Y. Friday afternoon, ending RPI’s undefeated season. The victorious Saints improved to 4-7 this spring by winning the doubles point and each of the top four singles. Rensselaer falls to 8-1 on the season.

 

Sophomore Matt Dwyer and junior Mike Wiltshire defeated Mike Heligman and Joe Black 8-3 at the #1 doubles position. Junior Neil Cutter and sophomore George Barbieri won at #2 doubles 8-2 over Joe Byrne and Aashish Kabra to take the doubles point for the Saints. Amadeus Lopez and Ranjeet Minocha beat senior Terran Palmer-Angell and freshman Amin Danai 9-7 at #3 doubles.

 

In singles action, Dwyer defeated Heligman 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-5 at #1 singles. Wiltshire won over Minocha 6-3, 6-1 at the #2 spot. At #3 singles, Barbieri beat Kabra 6-3, 6-2. Cutter defeated Byrne 6-3, 6-1 at #4 singles. Black beat Palmer-Angell at #5 6-4, 6-2 and Lopez defeated Danai at #6 6-3, 6-2.

 

SAINTS SPLIT WEEKEND

 

 Apr. 10: The St. Lawrence men's tennis team split on its road trip to Nazareth and RIT this weekend. Against Nazareth on Saturday, the Saints swept the singles matches and won two of three doubles matches to win the match 7-0. St. Lawrence then fell to the RIT Tigers 5-2 on Sunday. The Saints return to the court on Friday, April 15 at Rensselaer and at Vassar on the 16 th.

 

 In singles action versus Nazareth, sophomore Matt Dwyer defeated Ben Klempka at the #1 spot, 6-3, 6-2. Junior Mike Wiltshire won at the #2 singles spot, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 over Andras Putyera. Sophomore George Barbieri, playing at #3, defeated Tim Sorge 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). Junior Neil Cutter beat Terrance Nichols 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) at the #4 singles position. At #5, senior Terran Palmer-Angell beat Mitch Graves 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Freshman Amin Danai wrapped up singles play with a win at #6 over Kurt Meichtry 6-3, 6-4. In doubles action, Barbieri and Cutter defeated Graves and Sorge at the #2 spot, 8-6. Danai and Palmer-Angell won over Meichtry and Nichols at the #3 position 8-6. Dwyer and Wiltshire fell at the #1 spot 8-6 to Klempka and Putyera.

 

 On Sunday, Dwyer and Wiltshire won at the #1 doubles spot, beating Rod Razavi and David Chachu 8-4. Cutter and Barbieri won at #2 over Darren Stanley and Jason Swails 8-3. Amin and Palmer-Angell fell at the #3 position to Frank Salome and Jon New 8-2. In singles action, Wiltshire was the lone winner for the Saints. He beat Stanley 6-1, 6-0 at the #2 position.

 

SAINTS DOWN UNION 4-3

 

Apr. 1: The Saints Men’s Tennis team improved to 3-8 on the season with a 4-3 win over Union at Newell Fieldhouse Friday night.

St. Lawrence opened with a win at #1 doubles, before falling at #2 and #3. Sophomore Matt Dwyer and junior Mike Wiltshire paired to defeat Andrew Shohet and Jason Leibowitz 8-2 in the #1 doubles spot. Andrew Draznin and Trey Mintner beat juniors Neil Cutter and T.J. Rance at the #2 spot 8-1. Drew Goldstein and Sean Tuthill beat sophomore George Barbieri and senior Terran Palmer-Angell 8-3 at #3 doubles.

 

In singles action, Dwyer beat Draznin at #1 singles 6-3, 6-2, improving to 15-5 on the season. Wiltshire also won, at #2, 7-5, 6-0 over Mintner. Wiltshire is now 12-7 on the season. Cutter won the first set 7-5 at #3 singles, before falling 6-2, 7-6 (3) to Leibowitz in three. Barbieri defeated DeVer Warner at the #4 singles spot, 6-0, 6-4. Palmer-Angell downed Goldstein 6-2, 6-2 to win at #5. Shohet earned the win at #6 when Rance had to retire due to injury.

 

The Saints return to action on Saturday, April 9 at Nazareth.

 

PALMER-ANGELL NAMED TO ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

 

Mar. 29: Senior Terran Palmer-Angell was named to the Liberty League All-Academic Team. To be eligible, student-athletes must be atleast a sophomore and post a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. Palmer-Angell, a native of Plattsburgh, N.Y., is majoring in Psychology and Religion.

 

DWYER EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

 

March 28: Sophomore Matt Dwyer was named the Liberty League Player of the Week Monday afternoon. Dwyer improved to 8-1 on the season, going 2-1 this week at #1 singles. Dwyer defeated Ithaca's Chris Ciolino 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). On Saturday, he defeated Hobart's Peter Pine, ranked 17th in the Northeast by ITA, 6-3, 6-2. In doubles action with junior Mike Wiltshire, he went 2-1 with wins at #1 doubles against Ithaca (8-5) and Hamilton (8-5).

 

HOBART TIPS SAINTS 4-3, HAMILTON WINS 6-1

 

March 25: The Hobart College tennis team ended a five-match losing streak, defeating visiting St. Lawrence University 4-3 in the Bristol Field House on Friday. The Saints lost their second of the weekend 6-1 at Hamilton on Saturday.

 

All square at three points apiece, the match was decided by the sixth singles showdown between Hobart first-year Nick Raho and St. Lawrence junior T.J. Rance. With all eyes focused on the final pairing of the 4-hour and 15-minute match, Raho showed a poise and shot selection well beyond his years, dispatching Rance in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.  

 

Hobart swept the doubles to earn the doubles point while Matt Dwyer won at first singles, Mike Wiltshire at second singles and George Barberi at fourth singles for the Saint points.  

 

Wiltshire had the lone Saint point at Hamilton , beating Zach Kahn 6-3, 6-1 at second singles. He also teamed with Dwyer to win at first doubles 8-5.

SAINTS TOP ITHACA IN MEN’S TENNIS

 

March 23: St. Lawrence University’s men’s tennis team won its first dual match of the spring portion of the schedule at the Newell Field House on Wednesday, turning back Ithaca College 5-2 .

 

The Saints, now 2-6 in dual match competition for the year and 1-4 in the spring schedule, earned the doubles point by taking two of the three doubles matches. The team of Matt Dwyer and Michael Wiltshire beat Ithaca’s Colin Flynn and Joe Young 8-5 at first doubles, while Ithaca’s Chris Ciolino and Scott Gerbereaux beat Neil Cutter and T.J. Rance 8-5 at second doubles. Amin Danai and George Barberi then beat Jeff Buffum and Darren Hochberg of Ithaca 8-2 to give the Saints the 1-0 lead after the doubles competition.

 

Dwyer improved to 7-1 on the season with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win at number one over Ithaca;s Ciolino. Wiltshire beat Flynn 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at second singles and while Mike Abitbol of Ithaca beat Cutter 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 at third singles the Saints clinched the match as Barberi beat Young 6-2, 6-3 at fourth singles and Terran Palmer-Angell beat Buffum 6-3, 6-3 at fifth singles. Hochberg earned Ithaca’s second point of the match with a 7-5, 6-0 win at sixth singles.

 

SAINTS ENCOUNTER TOUGH SCHEDULE IN SOUTH CAROLINA

 

Mar. 23: The Saints Men’s Tennis Team (1-6) encountered a tough schedule as they made their annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. Three of the four opponents St. Lawrence faced were ranked in their respective region.

 

In their first match outdoors since last fall, the Saints faced Colby-Sawyer with winds gusting over 30mph. The team started out by winning all three doubles matches. Neil Cutter and T.J. Rance won at the #1 spot over Chris Pugliese and Pete Christenson 8-3. Matt Dwyer and Terran Palmer-Angell followed with a win at #2 over Danny Munsey and Matt Pallota 8-3. George Barbieri and Amin Danai downed Brendan O’Neill and Justin Tardiff 8-6 at the #3 spot. Colby-Sawyer responded with wins at #1, 3, 5, and 6 singles. Mike Wiltshire won 6-0, 7-6 at #2 and Barbieri won at #4 6-1, 6-1. Twice the Saints had match point at five singles to win, but were unable to convert.

 

The Saints then faced a tough Wheaton team that is ranked ninth in the Northeast by the ITA. The highlight of the match was Dwyer’s win at #1. Dwyer defeated Payum Payman 6-3, 6-0 for the lone Saints win. Paymna is ranked 11 th in the Northeast and 39 th nationally. Later in the day, the Saints faced Denison, ranked 12 th in the Central region by the ITA. Once again, the highlight of the match was a huge win by Dwyer. He defeated Ethan Branum 6-1, 6-4 at the #1 spot. Branum is ranked 30 th in the Central region.

 

In their final match in Hilton Head, the Saints faced the College of Wooster, ranked 17 th in the Central region. The temperature was 37 degrees with the windchill, the second coldest day ever in Hilton Head for that date. The men and women played at the same time on just four courts, so the men never got to play doubles. It was a close match, with St. Lawrence winning at #1 and #2 right off the bat. The Saints then fell at #3 and 5 in superbreakers.

 

SAINTS TAKE THREE OF FIVE AT 2005 ICEBREAKER

 

Feb. 27: Sophomore Matt Dwyer won his second straight “A” Bracket at the SLU Icebreaker on Sunday afternoon. The Saints also won the “A” and “B” Doubles Brackets.

 

Dwyer defeated Vladimir Vecher of Hartwick 6-1, 6-2 in the semi-finals to make it to the championship game. In the final game, Dwyer beat Andrew Draznin of Union 6-2, 6-1. Dwyer won the “A” Singles Bracket of the 2004 Icebreaker as a freshman.

 

Ithaca’s Mike Abitol won the “B” Singles Bracket, defeating Saints sophomore George Barbieri 2-6, 7-5 (13-11). Abitol had defeated Terrance Nichols of Nazareth 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 to make it to the finals. Barbieri had defeated teammate Amin Danai 6-2, 6-4 to advance. The loss in the finals was the first for Barbieri in a St. Lawrence tournament.

 

In the “C” Singles Bracket, Union’s Sean Tuthill beat his teammate Vic Ravikumar 6-1, 6-2. Tuthill had defeated teammate Zach Warner to advance. Ravikumar beat Ithaca’s Darren Hochberg in the semifinals to advance.

 

Dwyer teamed with junior Mike Wiltshire to win the “A” Doubles Bracket, 8-4 over Weaver and Klempka from Nazareth. Dwyer and Wiltshire defeated Vecher and Klein 8-6 of Hartwick in the semifinals. Weaver and Klempka beat Flynn and Young of Ithaca 8-2 to advance from the semifinals. In the “B” Doubles bracket, Barbieri and Danai teamed to defeat Goldstein and Tuthill to win 9-7. Barbieri and Danai had beaten Buffum and Hochberg 8-3 in the semifinals. Goldstein and Tuthill beat Nichols and Meitry 8-2 to advance out of the semifinals.

 

SAINTS IN GOOD POSITION GOING INTO SECOND DAY

 

Feb. 26: Several Saints are in good position after one day of play at the St. Lawrence 2005 Icebreaker tennis tournament. Matt Dwyer beat Chris Ciolino of Ithaca 6-2, 6-2 to advance in the “A” Singles Bracket. Dwyer will face Vladimir Vecher of Hartwick tomorrow. Vecher defeated Jason Leibowitz to advance.

 

Also in the “A” Singles Bracket, Andrew Draznin of Union bested SLU’s Mike Wiltshire 6-3, 4-6, (10-3). Hartwick’s Vanja Ljubribratic beat Ben Klempka of Nazareth and will face Draznin tomorrow.

 

George Barbieri beat Jeff Buffum of Ithaca 4-6, 6-3 (13-11) and Dever Warner of Union 6-0, 6-4 to advance in the “B” Singles Bracket. Amin Danai of SLU controlled Andrew Shohet of Union 7-6, 6-4, (7-4) and Tim Sorge of Nazareth to advance, and he will face Barbieri tomorrow.

 

Mike Abitol of Ithaca bested Neil Cutter and David Plossl of Hamilton to advance. He will face Terrance Nichols of Nazareth tomorrow. Nichols defeated Drew Goldstein of Union and Terran Palmer-Angel of SLU to advance.

 

In the “C” Singles Bracket, Union’s Vic Ravikumar beat Kurt Meitry of Nazareth and Eric DesRoberts of Hartwick to advance. Ithaca’s Darren Hochberg bested TJ Rance of SLU and Dan Meininger of Hartwick to move on. Hochberg and Ravikumar will meet tomorrow.

 

Zach Warner of Union beat Adam Benson and Matt Satterly of St. Lawrence to advance. Union’s Sean Tuthill beat Drew Kozlowski of SLU and Jerry Stoker of Nazareth to move on. He will play Warner tomorrow.

 

In the Double’s “A” Bracket, Draznin/Mintner of Union topped Wiltshire/Dwyer of SLU 8-1, and will face Vecher/Klein of Hartwick tomorrow. Flynn/Young of Ithaca beat Cutter/Rance of SLU 8-5, and will compete against Weaver/Klempka tomorrow.

 

In the “B” Bracket, Buffum/Hochberg of Ithaca advanced and will face Barbieri/Danai of ALU tomorrow. Barbieri/Danai beat Warner/Ravikumar 8-3 to advance. Nichols/Meitry of Nazareth advanced and will face Goldstein/Tuthill tomorrow. Goldstein/Tuthill bested SLU’s Palmer-Angel/Kozlowski 8-3 to advance.

 

The second half of the tournament will be played tomorrow in the Newell Fieldhouse at St. Lawrence University.

 

ICEBREAKER BRACKETS NOW AVAILABLE

 

Feb. 23: The 2005 St. Lawrence Icebreaker Brackets are now available. The tournament begins Saturday, February 26 at 9:00 p.m. The matches will be played on the tennis courts inside the Newell Field House on the campus of St. Lawrence.

WILTSHIRE ADVANCES IN ITA AT VASSAR

 

Sept. 25: Mike Wiltshire won his first two matches and advanced to the quarterfinals in the Wilson/ITA East Regional tennis championships at Vassar.

Wiltshire beat Jeff Lahmann of Hamilton 6-2, 6-4 in his opening match and turned back Vikram Rao of Drew 6-3, 6-3 in his second round match. He lost to top seed Partha Bhattacharya of Rochester in the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-2.

Fifth seeded Matt Dwyer beat Terrance Nichols of Nazareth 6-3, 6-1 in the first round, but was upset by Aaron Haak of St. John Fisher in the second round, losing 7-6 (5), 6-2.

Terran Palmer-Angell lost to Ryan Carty of the College of New Jersey 6-1, 6-0 and Neil Cutter last to Vladimir Vecker of Hartwick 6-1, 6-2 in the other first round Saint singles matches.

Dwyer and Wiltshire beat Skidmore 8-0 in the first round of doubles play, but were beaten by Rochester 9-7 in the second round while Cutter and T.J. Rance were beaten by NYU 8-4 in the first round and lost to Skidmore 8-3 in the consolation round.

DWYER SEEDED FIFTH AT ITA REGIONALS

 

Sept. 23: The seeds were announced for the ITA Northeast Regional this afternoon. Sophomore Matt Dwyer was given a #5 seed in the draw. This season, Dwyer is 5-2 overall and 4-0 in tournament action. He will be facing Terrance Nichols of Nazareth in the first round. Competition begins Friday, September 24 at Vassar College and continues through Sunday, September 26.

 

Also competing for St. Lawrence are senior Terran Palmer-Angel and juniors Mike Wiltshire and Neil Cutter. Palmer-Angel will face the #6 seed, Ryan Carty of the College of New Jersey in the opening round. Wiltshire will meet Jeff Lahrmann of Hamilton in the opening round. Cutter will face Vladimir Vecher of Hartwick in the first round.

 

SAINTS DROP TWO AT FLOWER CITY INVITATIONAL

 

Sept. 19: The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team (1-2) dropped matches to Rochester and Hobart at the Flower City Invitational this weekend. The Saints lost to the Yellowjackets Saturday 7-0, then fell to the Statesmen 6-1 on Sunday.

 

Against the Yellowjackets, the Saints gave Rochester a run in doubles action. Matt Dwyer and Mike Wiltshire lost to Reddy and Bhattacharya at the #1 spot 8-5. At #2, Neil Cutter and T.J. Rance fell 9-7 to Hausen. Terran Palmer-Angell and George Barbieri lost at #3 to Prince and Sheuker 8-2. The Saints did not fare well in the singles, losing all six matches to the Yellowjackets.

 

Against the Statesmen, the Saints won two out of three doubles to earn the only point for St. Lawrence. Cutter and Rance defeated Silver and Raho 8-2 at #2. Barbieri and Palmer-Angell won at #3, beating Koenia and Davis 8-5. Hobart won at all six singles spots to earn the 6-1 win over St. Lawrence.

 

The Saints travel to Vassar Sept. 24-26 for the ITA Tournament, their final competition of the fall season.

 

SAINTS DOMINATE ITHACA 6-1 AT FLOWER CITY TOURNAMENT

 

Sept. 18: The St. Lawrence men's tennis team (1-0) defeated Ithaca 6-1 in day one of the Flower City Tournament, co-hosted by Nazareth College and the University of Rochester. The Saints won two-of-three doubles to start and then five-of-six singles to down the Bombers.

 

Matt Dwyer and Mike Wiltshire improved to 3-1 in doubles with a 8-5 win over Colin Flynn and Joe Young at the #1 doubles. Chris Ciolino and Scott Gerebereux won the lone doubles match for the Bombers at #2 by defeating Neil Cutter and T.J. Rance 8-2. George Barbieri and Terran Palmer-Angell won at #3, blanking Mike Abitbol and Stefan Berglund 8-0, improving their doubles record to 4-0.

 

In singles action, Matt Dwyer improved to 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ciolino at the #1 spot. Wiltshire defeated Flynn at #2 with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Abitbol won the only singles match for the Bombers at the #3 spot, with a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Cutter. Barbieri improved his singles record to 4-0 with a tough three-set win over Young. He won the first set 7-5, lost the second 3-6 then rebounded with a 11-9 win in the tiebreaker. Palmer-Angell defeated Jeff Buffum 6-3, 6-3 at #5 and Amin Danai went to 3-1 in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Berglund at the #6 spot.

SAINTS WIN FOUR AT ST. LAWRENCE FALL CLASSIC

 

Sept. 12: The 2004 St. Lawrence Fall Classic concluded Sunday afternoon in Canton, N.Y. With Saints winning four of the five brackets.

Sophomore Matt Dwyer won the "A" Singles Bracket by defeating Ben Klempka of Nazareth 4-6, 6-2, (10-8). Dwyer had defeated Jon Weaver of Nazareth 6-0, 6-2 in the semi-finals to advance. Klempka downed junior Mike Wiltshire 6-3, 7-5 to advance.

 

In the "B" Singles Bracket, sophomore George Barbieri defeated Zach Blaze of RIT 7-5, 1-6, (10-5). Barbieri beat Jon New of RIT 6-4, 6-4 to advance out of the semi-finals. Blaze defeated freshman Amni Danai 6-1, 6-1 to advance.

 

Junior T.J. Rance won the "C" Singles Bracket to complete the Saints sweep in singles action. Rance defeated freshman Jacob Levenson 6-1, 6-0. Rance had beaten Adam DePuit of RIT 2-6, 6-2, (10-8) to advance out of the semi-finals. Levenson had beat sophomore Drew Kozlowski 6-7(2), 7-6(4), (10-6).

 

Jon Weaver and Ben Klempka won the "A" Doubles Bracket after beating Wiltshire and Dwyer 9-7. Senior Terran Palmer-Angel and Barbieri won the "B" Doubles Bracket with a win over New and DePuit 8-5.

 

The Saints return to action at the Flower City Invitational Saturday, September 18.

SAINTS IN TOP FORM AT ST.LAWRENCE FALL CLASSIC

 

Sept. 11: The Saints men's tennis team was in top form at the 2004 St. Lawrence Fall Classic on Saturday. Saints players are in the semi-finals of all three singles brackets and the finals of both doubles brackets.

 

Sophomore Matt Dwyer will play Jon Weaver of Nazareth in the first semi-finals game of the "A" Bracket on Sunday after downing Brent Carey of Clarkson 6-0, 6-0 and Darren Stanly of RIT 6-1, 6-1. Weaver defeated Jason Swails of RIT to advance to the semi-finals. In the other "A" Bracket semi-finals, junior Mike Wiltshire will meet Ben Klempka of Nazareth. Wiltshire defeated Frank Solome of RIT 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) after a bye in the first round. Klempka downed Justyn Kinsley of Clarkson 6-0, 6-1 then beat junior Neil Cutter 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the meeting with Wiltshire.

 

Sophomore George Barbieri will meet Jon New of RIT in the semi-finals of the "B" Bracket on Sunday. Barbieri defeated Kurt Meichtry of Nazareth 6-3, 6-0 to advance after a bye in the first round. New downed Justin DeSantis of Clarkson 6-1, 6-1 after an opening round bye. In the other semi-finals match, Amin Danai will meet Zach Blaze of RIT. Danai beat Terrance Nichols of Nazareth 5-7, 7-6, 10-8 and then beat Rod Razavi of RIT 6-3, 6-1. Blaze beat senior Terran Palmer-Angel 6-2, 6-4 and then downed Mitch Graves of Nazareth 6-0, 6-2.

 

In the "C" Bracket, junior T.J. Rance will play Adam DePuit of RIT in the first semi-final match. Rance beat Jerry Stocker of Nazareth 6-0, 6-2. He then downed Tom Fountain of RIT 6-2, 6-2. DePuit beat freshman Matt Sutterly 6-3, 6-3 after an opening round bye. Freshman Jacob Levenson will meet teammate, sophomore Drew Kozlowski in the second semi-final match. Levenson beat teammate and classmate Adam Benson 6-2, 6-1 after a bye in the opening round. Kozlowski beat Nick Peone of Nazareth 6-1, 3-6 (10-3) and then downed Nat Weeks of Clarkson 6-0, 6-0 to advance.

 

Weaver and Klempka will square off against Wiltshire and Dwyer in the "A" Doubles Bracket championship. Wiltshire and Dwyer beat Kinsley and Carey 8-0 and then downed Swails and Stanley of RIT 8-1. Weaver and Klempka beat Danai and Sutterly 8-0 and then Solome and Razavi 8-5 to advance.

 

In the "B" Doubles Bracket championship, Palmer-Angel and Barbieri will meet New and DePuit on Sunday. Palmer-Angel and Barbieri first beat Fountain and Blaze 8-4 and then defeated Nichols and Peone 8-6. New and DePuit beat DeSantis and Weeks 8-0 in the first round. In the second round, the duo beat Levenson and Kozlowski 8-5 to advance.

 

Action will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. on the outdoor tennis complex on the St. Lawrence campus.

 

KURVINK JOINS SAINTS TENNIS STAFF

 

Aug. 26: David D. Kurvink has joined the St. Lawrence University coaching staff as an assistant coach for the men's and women's tennis teams. Kurvink is a 2003 graduate of Moravian College and was a four-time all-conference tennis player. He was named team MVP and captain in both his junior and senior seasons and posted the second highest win total in school history with a record of 50-17.

 

After spending a year at Van Der Meer Tennis Academy, Kurvink is now a USPTR teaching professional and has worked extensively in a variety of international training academies.

 

DELORBE, PALMER-ANGELL NAMED 2004 ITA SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

 

July 26: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its 2004 ITA Scholar-Athletes today. John DeLorbe, '04, and Terran Palmer-Angell, '05, were named honored. Both DeLorbe and Palmer-Angell were ITA Scholar-Athletes in 2003.

 

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).

 

DWYER RANKED IN SINGLES; DWYER/WILTSHIRE RANKED IN DOUBLES IN NORTHEAST BY ITA

 

June 23: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its final rankings for the 2003-2004 season. Freshman Matt Dwyer, the Liberty League Co-Player and Rookie of the Year, was ranked 23rd in the Northeast Region. Dwyer and doubles partner sophomore Mike Wiltshire were ranked 16th in doubles in the Northeast.

 

Dwyer played at the #1 seed for the Saints this spring, finishing with a record of 14-2 and losing just seven sets. In tournament action, Dwyer finished 4-0, winning the "A" Singles Flight of the St.Lawrence Icebreaker Invitaional. Included among Dwyer's wins is a 6-3, 6-1 defeat over Peter Pine of Hobart, then-ranked 23rd in the Northeast by the ITA.

 

Dwyer/Wiltshire played at #1 doubles for the Saints this spring, finishing undefeated at 10-0. Included among their wins, are two 8-6 victories over Pine/McAndrew of Hobart, then-ranked 9th in the Northeast by the ITA.
