2003-2004 Archives DWYER NAMED UCAA CO-PLAYER; ROOKIE OF THE YEAR May 4: Freshman Matt Dwyer earned multiple UCAA honors when the end-of-season awards were announced Tuesday. The Stowe, Vt. Native was named the Co-Player of the Year and the Rookie of the Year. Dwyer played at the #1 seed for the Saints this spring, finishing with a record of 14-2 and losing just seven sets. In tournament action, Dwyer finished 4-0, winning the "A" Singles Flight of the St. Lawrence Icebreaker Invitaional. Included among Dwyer's wins is a 6-3, 6-1 defeat over Peter Piné of Hobart, ranked 23rd in the Northeast by the ITA. In addition, he earned first-team singles honors and first-team doubles honors with partner, sophomore Mike Wiltshire. Dwyer/Wiltshire played at #1 doubles for the Saints this spring, finishing undefeated at 10-0. Included among their wins, are two 8-6 victories over Piné/McAndrew of Hobart, ranked 9th in the Northeast by the ITA. Senior John DeLorbe was named to the UCAA All-Academic team. The Wilmington, Del. native is majoring in Chemistry with a minor in math. To be honored, players must maintain an overall 3.2 grade point average and must have sophomore standing at St. Lawrence. SAINTS FINISH THIRD AT UCAA TOURNAMENT Apr. 25: The #4 seed Saints defeated #2 Vassar 4-1 in the consolation game to finish in third in the UCAA Tournament at Hobart on Sunday afternoon. In doubles action, Matt Dwyer/Mike Wiltshire defeated Jake Maslikowski/Ian Hartsough 8-0 at #1. Andrew Bell/Ian Graddock defeated Ben Leffler/Aaron Brookner 9-8 (7-5) at #2 after being down 7-4. At #3, John DeLorbe/Neil Cutter lost to Andrew Ezekowitz/Roger Kueny 9-7. In singles action, Dwyer defeated Maslikowski 6-0, 6-3 at #1. At #3 Wiltshire lost to Hartsough 6-4, 6-4. Cutter beat Brookner 6-3, 7-6 at #5 and George Barbieri beat Kueny 6-0, 6-0 at #6. Bell and Graddock were both winning at #2 and #4 respectively when the match was called. The Saints improve to 11-5 on the season with the win. SAINTS BLANK RPI; FALL TO HOBART IN UCAA TOURNAMENT Apr. 25: The #4 seed Saints won a fifth-straight match by a 7-0 score when they downed the #5 seed RPI in the opening round of the UCAA Tournament. St.Lawrence then met the #1 seed Hobart in the semi-finals. Hobart defeated the Saints 5-2 to advance to the championship. In singles action against RPI, Matt Dwyer won 6-4, 6-2 at #1. At #2, Andrew Bell won 6-2, 6-1. Mike Wiltshire won 6-3, 6-1 at #3. Ian Graddock won 7-5, 6-2 at #4. Cutter won at #5 4-6, 7-6, 10-5 and George Barbieri won at #6 6-3, 6-0. In doubles action, Dwyer/Wiltshire won 8-1 at #1 and Cutter/John DeLorbe won 8-3 at #3 to win the doubles point. Against Hobart, Barbieri won the lone singles match for the Saints at #6. He defeated Matt Jacobus 6-4, 6-3. Dwyer/Wiltshire defeated Peter Pine/Trevor McAndrew 8-6 at #1 and Cutter/DeLorbe beat Matt Silver/Jacobus 8-5 at #3 to take the doubles point. The Saints will face #2 Vassar in the third place game on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. SAINTS SEEDED FOURTH, WILL TAKE ON RPI IN UCAA TOURNEY Apr. 21: The St.Lawrence men's tennis team, seeded fourth in the UCAA Tournament, will take on fifth-seeded Rensselaer at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. The UCAA Tournament is being hosted by Hobart College. Tournament results are available at: http://www.hws.edu/statesmen/tennis/ucaa.asp SAINTS DOMINATE GOLDEN KNIGHTS; WIN 7-0 Apr. 21: The St.Lawrence men's tennis team continued its dominance of opponents with a 7-0 blanking of the Clarkson Golden Knights in Canton Wednesday afternoon. The Saints have not surrendered a point to an opponent since a 4-3 loss at Skidmore on April 3. In doubles action, Matt Dwyer/Mike Wiltshire playing at #1 blanked Sam Jain/Brent Carey 8-0. At #2, Andrew Bell/Ian Graddock downed Justyn Kinsley/Bryan Beckingham 8-1. Neil Cutter/John DeLorbe defeated Justin DeSantis/Anthony Cerchio 8-2 to win the first point for the Saints. In singles action, Dwyer blanked Kinsley 6-0, 6-0 at #1. Bell downed Jain at #2, 6-1, 6-1. Graddock defeated Dave Twichell at #3 without surrendering a game, 6-0, 6-0. George Barbieri won at #4, blanking Carey 6-0, 6-0. Cutter downed Cerchio 6-4, 6-1 at #5. Terran Palmer-Angell beat DeSantis 6-1, 6-1 at #6. The Saints improve to 12-6 overall. St.Lawrence returns to action this weekend in the UCAA Tournament hosted by Hobart. DWYER, WILTSHIRE EARN UCAA HONORS Apr. 19: Sophomore Mike Wiltshire and freshman Matt Dwyer earned UCAA honors for their performance in the Saints 7-0 blanking of RPI on Friday. Wiltshire was named the UCAA Co-Performer of the Week. Wiltshire defeated RPI's #3 singles, Joaquin Denoya, without losing a game, 6-0, 6-0, helping lead the Saints to the 7-0 win. This season, Wiltshire is 9-3 at #3 and 2-1 in tournament play. Dwyer was named the UCAA Co-Rookie of the Week. Dwyer defeated RPI's #1 singles, Borjan Gagoski, losing just one game, 6-0, 6-1. This is the second week in a row that Dwyer has earned Rookie of the Week honors. Dwyer is 11-1 at #1 this season and 4-0 in tournament play. The Saints host Clarkson Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. before heading to the UCAA Championships at Hobart this weekend. SAINTS BLANK RPI 7-0 Apr. 16: The St.Lawrence men's tennis team shutout the RPI Redhawks 7-0 on Friday afternoon. The Saints have not surrendered a point since a 4-3 loss at Skidmore on April 3. The Saints improve to 11-6 on the season and will take on Clarkson on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Matt Dwyer/Mike Wiltshire downed Borjan Gagoski/Joe Byrne at #1 doubles 8-3. At #2 doubles, Ian Graddock/Andrew Bell defeated Joaquin Denoya/Joe Black 8-2. And rounding out the doubles, Neil Cutter/Jon DeLorbe defeated Delaney/Socaciu 8-2 to take the first point in the match. In singles, Dwyer defeated Gagoski at #1 singles 6-0, 6-1. Bell beat Byrne 6-4, 7-5 at #2 and at #3, Wiltshire shutout Denoya 6-0, 6-0. Graddock won at #4 6-3, 6-1 against Black. Cutter defeated RPI's #5, Amadeus Lopez, 7-5, 6-2. George Barbieri was winning 4-2 in the first set against Eric McDermott, when McDermott defaulted because of injury. DWYER NAMED UCAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Apr. 12: Dwyer defeated Nazareth's #1 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 on Friday to help the Saints to a 7-0 win over Nazareth. On Saturday, Dwyer defeated RIT's #1, 6-3, 6-3 to help the Saints to another 7-0 win. This season, Dwyer is 10-1 in singles at #1 and 4-0 in tournament action. In doubles, he has a combined record of 11-3. SAINTS BLANK NAZARETH AND RIT Apr. 11: The St.Lawrence men's tennis team improved to 10-6 on the year with 7-0 wins over Nazareth and RIT on the road. Against Nazareth on Friday afternoon, Matt Dwyer/Mike Wiltshire playing at #1 doubles defeated Ben Klempka/Mitch Graves 8-2. Andrew Bell/Ian Graddock defeated Andrew Baldwin/Matt Noble at #2 8-5 and Neil Cutter/George Barbieri defeated the #3 pair 9-8 (7-4) to take the first point of the match. In singles action, Dwyer downed Klempka 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 at #1. At #2, Bell defeated Noble 6-0, 6-0. Wiltshire beat Baldwin at #3 6-3, 6-1. Graddock won his match at #4, downing Tim Sorge 6-4, 6-2. Cutter downed Eric Traub at #5 6-3, 6-4 and Barbieri won his match at #6 over Mitch Graves 6-3, 7-6(5). Against RIT on Saturday morning, the Saints continued to dominate. Dwyer/Wiltshire defeated David Chachu/Darren Stanley at #1 doubles 8-3. Graddock/Bell downed Chris Leary/Rod Razavi at #2 8-5 and Cutter/Barbieri defeated Jon New/Tim Patterson 8-0 at #3 to take the first point in the match. In singles action, Dwyer defeated Stanley at #1, 6-3, 6-3. At #2, Bell downed Leary 6-4, 6-1. Wiltshire won his match at #3 against Frank Solome 6-3, 6-1. Graddock defeated New at #4 6-2, 6-2. Cutter defeated Razavi at #5 7-5, 2-6 (10-8) and Barbieri won his match at #6 7-5, 6-0, downing Patterson. The Saints return to action on Friday, April 16 against RPI at St.Lawrence at 4:00 p.m. SAINTS DOWN UNION 6-1, FALL TO SKIDMORE 4-3 Apr. 5: The St.Lawrence men's tennis team started off its weekend with a 6-1 win over Union in Schenectady, NY on Friday. On Saturday, the Saints lost a tough 4-3 match at Skidmore. The Saints won all three doubles matches to take a point to start off against the Dutchmen. Matt Dwyer and Mike Wiltshire playing at the #1 doubles spot defeated Andrew Droznin and Jimmy White 9-7. Andrew Bell and Ian Graddock defeated DeVer Warner and Sean Tuthill at the #2, 8-5. Finally, George Barbieri and Neil Cutter downed Drew Goldstein and Mitch Linder 7-2 at #3. In singles action, Dwyer defeated Droznin 3-6, 6-0 (10-8) at #1 while Bell downed Warner 6-4, 1-6 (10-5) at #2. Wiltshire playing at #3 lost to White 6-2, 6-3. Graddock defeated Tuthill 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) at #4 and Cutter downed Goldstein 6-4, 6-2 at #5. Barbieri, playing at #6, downed Linder 6-3, 6-2. On Saturday, Skidmore won two of the three doubles matches to take the point. Dwyer and Wiltshire won at #1 9-8 (7-5). Bell and Graddock lost at #2 8-5 and Cutter and Barbieri fell at #3 8-5. In singles action, Dwyer defeated Sher at #1 6-3, 6-4. Bell fell at #2 to Berkowitz 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Wiltshire won at #3 6-3, 6-3 and Graddock won at #4 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Cutter fell at #5 6-1, 6-4 and Barbieri fell at #6 6-3, 6-1. The Saints move to 8-6 overall this year and 5-4 this spring. St.Lawrence travels to Nazareth on Friday for a 4:00 p.m. match and on Saturday, the Saints meet RIT at 11:00 a.m. SAINTS FALL TO HOBART 4-3 Mar 28: The St. Lawrence University Men's Tennis (7-5) team fell to Hobart College, which is ranked 15th in the North East, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. Matt Dwyer defeated Peter Pine at the No. 1 singles 6-3 and 6-1. Pine is ranked 23rd in the North East. Dwyer later teamed with Mike Wiltshire to defeat Pine and Trevor McAndrew in No. 1 doubles 8-6. Pine and McAndrew are ranked 9th in the North East. The Saints will play at Union on Friday. SAINTS DEFEAT HAMILTON 6-1 Mar 27: The St. Lawrence University Men's Tennis team defeated Hamilton College 6-1 on Saturday afternoon in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association match up. The Saints won all of the double matches as Andrew Bell and Matt Dwyer defeated Duncan Cameron and Erick Volp 8-4. Neil Cutter and Mike Wiltshire beat Brad Polan and Mike Rapetti 8-3 and John DeLorbe and Ian Graddock won 8-6 over Jason Thomas and Brian Tilley. SAINTS WIN 4-3 AT ITHACA Mar 24: The St. Lawrence University Men's Tennis Team defeated Ithaca College in dramatic fashion in a Wednesday night match up at Cornell as #2 Andrew Bell came from behind to win the third match over Chris Ciolino to take the win and the match for The Saints improve their record to 6-4 while Ithaca falls to 5-7. Bell lost the first match 6-1 and was down 4-1 in the second before coming from behind and winning 7-6. Bell went on to win the third 6-4 which broke the tie between St. Lawrence and Ithaca. Matt Dwyer defeated Blair Watkins in the #1 spot in two sets of St. Lawrence took two wins in double matches as Wiltshire and Cutter downed Flynn and Young 9-7. John DeLorbe and Graddock overpowered Sherman and Zach Coletta 8-2. The Saints will next host Hamilton on Saturday and Hobart on Sunday. SAINTS WIN TWO IN HILTON HEAD Mar 23: The St. Lawrence University Men's Tennis Team split their matches in Hilton Head, SC over spring break. The Saints downed Stevens Institute 6-1 in the first match. Wheaton defeated the Saints the next day 6-1. St.Lawrence rebounded to defeat Macalester 7-0 on Wednesday. On Thursday, Denison prevailed in a tough and tight match with the Saints, 4-3. In singles action, the Saints were led by Mike Wiltshire who won all four of his matches at the #3 spot. Wiltshire partnered with Neil Cutter and the duo went 2-2 in their matches at the #2 spot. Matt Dwyer returned with a 3-1 record at the #1 spot for the Saints. Dwyer paired up with Andrew Bell for the #1 doubles spot. The duo returned with a 2-2 record. Bell finished the week with a 2-2 record in the #2 singles spot. Ian Graddock finished the week with a 2-2 record. He partnered with John DeLorbe. The pair returned with a 2-2 record at the #3 doubles spot. DeLorbe playing the final two matches at the #6 singles spot returned with a 1-1 record. Neil Cutter, playing the first two matches at the #5 singles spot, finished with an 0-2 record. George Barbieri played at the #6 spot in the first two matches, splitting the two. He moved to the #5 spot for the final two matches and won both of those. The Saints are now 2-2 in the Spring and 5-4 overall this year. St.Lawrence returns to the courts on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Ithaca for a 4:00 p.m. match. ST. LAWRENCE EARNS THREE WINS AT SLU ICEBREAKER INVITATIONAL Feb. 22: The St. Lawrence University Men's Tennis Team earned two wins in the singles bracket and a win in the "B" doubles bracket. Matt Dwyer defeated Jefferson Dargout of Nazareth going 6-0, 6-1 for a win in the "A" Singles bracket. George Barbieri notched another win for St. Lawrence with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Ithaca's Zach Coletta in the "C" Singles bracket. In the "B" Singles match, Colin Flynn of Ithaca defeated Sean Tuthill of Union 7-6, 2-6, 14-12 for the win. In "A" Doubles action, Dargout/Klempka of Nazareth beat Bell/Dwyer of St. Lawrence 8-4. In the "B" bracket, teammates Graddock/DeLore and Rance/Barbieri faced off in the final of the "B" bracket. Graddock/DeLorbe prevailed 9-8 (11-9). DAY ONE COMPLETE AT SLU ICEBREAKER INVITATIONAL Feb. 22: Results from the first day of competition at the St.Lawrence Icebreaker Invitational are now up. SAINTS WRAP-UP FALL SEASON Nov. 20 - The Saints finished out their non-traditional season with a 3-2 record. Saints doubles faired well in the fall, finishing 10-4 in team competition and 11-4 in individual/tournament competition. Freshman George Barbieri finished with a 4-0 record in individual competition and a 3-0 doubles record when partnering with classmate Jim Cleaver. Cleaver finished with a 3-1 individual record. The Saints traditional season takes place in the spring and will be kicked off this year with the Saints Ice Breaker Invitational on March 6 and 7. SAINTS SPLIT WEEKEND Oct. 5 - The Saints closed out fall competition by splitting their matches this weekend. St. Lawrence fell 5-2 to Vermont on Friday and then bounced back to down St. Michael's 7-0. Against Vermont, Mike Wiltshire/Neil Cutter won 9-8 (7-4) at #2 doubles. Vermont won at #1 and #3 doubles to win the point. Moving into singles action, Andrew Bell lost 7-5, 6-3 at #1 singles. Matt Dwyer won 7-5, 6-2 at #2. Wiltshire won at #3 when Tom Whittaker retired in the third set. Ian Graddock fell 6-3, 6-3 at #4 and Cutter fell 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 at #5. John DeLorbe fell 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) at #6. Versus St. Michael's, the Saints rallied. Bell/Dwyer won 8-1 at #1 doubles, Wiltshire/Cutter won 8-0 at #2 and Graddock/DeLorbe won 8-2 at #3. In singles action, Bell won easily, 6-0, 6-1 at #1. Dwyer won handily at #2, 6-0, 6-0. At #3, Wiltshire won 6-1, 6-2 and Graddock won at #4 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Cutter won 6-1, 6-4 over St. Michael's #5 and DeLorbe downed the #6 6-2, 6-1. The Saints end their fall campaign with a 3-2 record. SAINTS COMPETE AT ITA CHAMPIONSHIPS Sept. 27 - The Saints traveled to Vassar to compete in the ITA Championships. Sophomore Mike Wiltshire and freshman Matt Dwyer make it to third round. Sophomore Mike Wiltshire defeated Hamilton's #1 Verun Vasudeva 6-4, 3-6 (10-2) in the first round. In the second round, Wiltshire downed #13 Jason Thalmann of Drew, 6-2, 6-2. Wiltshire fell to #4 Peter Pine of Hobart, 6-2, 6-1 in the third round. Freshman Matt Dwyer downed Mitchell Graves, Nazareth, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. In the second, Dwyer defeated Aaron McCormick of Drew, 6-3, 6-1. Dwyer fell to #3 Mike Thompson of NYU 6-2, 6-2 in the third round. Senior Andrew Bell defeated Chris Irving of RPI 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. In the second, Bell fell to #11 Lucas Coene of Oneonta, 6-1, 6-2. Ian Graddock fell in the opening round to #5 Dave Chachu of RIT, 6-2, 6-1. In the consolation bracket, Graddock defeated Blair Watkins, Ithaca, 8-3. Graddock will face Matthew Noble of Nazareth in the second round of the singles consolation. In the doubles bracket, Graddock/Wiltshire fell to #1 Williford/Bhattancharya, Rochester, 8-5. They will face White/Goldstein of Union in the first round of the doubles consolation. Bell/Dwyer fell to Prince/Shenker, Rochester, 8-7 (7-4) in the opening round of the doubles bracket. SAINTS SWEEP DOUBLES FLIGHTS AT FALL CLASSIC Sept. 21 - The Saint men's tennis team performed well at the St. Lawrence Fall Classic this weekend, sweeping the both doubles flights and winning the "C" Singles Flight. Freshman George Barberi defeated Kenji Tabery of Hamilton to win the "C" Singles Flight this afternoon, 6-3, 6-3. Barberi defeated Mike Simon (Union), Ryan Saucier (Nazareth), and teammate Jim Cleaver on his way to the finals. Tabery defeated Pat Riley (Nazareth), Drew Kozlowski (St. Lawrence), and Prashant Sadarangani (Hamilton) on his way to the finals. David Chachu of RIT defeated Verun Vasudeva of Hamilton to take the "A" Singles Flight championship, 6-2, 6-4. Chachu beat Andrew Draznin (Union), Matt Dwyer (St. Lawrence), Zach Kahn (Hamilton) on his way to the championship. Vasudeva beat Andrew Bell (St. Lawrence), Ben Klempka (St. Lawrence), VrshWanath Srinagesh (Union) on his way to the finals. Dave Sands from Hamilton defeated Sean Tuthill of Union to win the "B" Singles Flight championship. Sands downed Justyn Kinsley (Clarkson), Billy Goldstein (Union), and Eric Traub (Nazareth) on his way to meet Tuthill. Tuthill defeated Chris Leary (RIT), Jon New (RIT), and Brad Polan (Hamilton) on his way to the finals. Bell and Dwyer (St. Lawrence) teamed up to win the "A" Doubles Flight, defeating teammates, Wiltshire and Cutter, 8-4. On their way to the finals, Bell/Dwyer downed Noble/Traub (Nazareth) and Srinagesh/Draznin (Union). Wiltshire/Cutter defeated Agostino/Goldstein (Union), Vasudeva/Kahn (Hamilton) and Chachu/Nembhard (RIT) to make their way to the finals. Cleaver and Barberi (St. Lawrence) defeated teammates Ian Graddock and John DeLorbe to win the "B" Doubles Flight. Cleaver/Barberi downed Sands/Briggs (Hamilton) and Razavi/New (RIT) on their way to the finals. Graddock/DeLorbe defeated Sadarangani/Tabery (Hamilton), Riley/Saucier (Nazareth) and Solome/Stanley (RIT) to make it to the finals. SAINTS FALL TO HOBART IN FINALS OF FLOWER CITY TOURNAMENT Sept. 14 - The Saints (2-1) faced the Hobart Statesmen in the finals of the 2003 Flower City Tournament hosted by Nazareth College. St. Lawrence defeated Oneonta 4-3 then Nazareth 6-1 to advance to the finals. Hobart beat RIT 6-1 and Ithaca 6-1 to meet St. Lawrence in the finals. The Statesmen came out on top 7-0 to win the championship. The Statesmen took the point in doubles by winning at #1 and #3. Neil Cutter and Mike Wiltshire won for the Saints at the #2. Cutter/Wiltshire defeated Adam Raffa and Matt Silver 8-3. Hobart swept the singles, winning all but one set. Hobart finished ranked 15th in the region in the ITA's final spring poll. Junior Peter Pine finished ranked 18th in the final spring poll, as a sophomore. The Saints hit the courts again on Sept. 20-21 when they host the SLU Invitational.
