2002-2003 Archives SAINTS SWEEP RED HAWKS FOR FIFTH PLACE AT UCAA'S April 27, 2003 - The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team swept Rensselaer 7-0 on Sunday to finish in fifth place at the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association tournament hosted by Vassar over the weekend. Andrew Bell, Aaron Cutter, Mike Wiltshire, Ian Graddock and Adam Cutter all won their singles matches in straight sets, and Terran Palmer-Angell won a super tiebreaker to claim the win at sixth singles. The Saints also swept the doubles matches easily to finish in fifth place. On Saturday, the Saints lost to Vassar 4-1 indoors, with Adam Cutter getting the lone win for the Saints at fifth singles. With the weekend split, the Saints finish the season 8-8. SAINTS SWEEP CLARKSON April 24, 2003 - The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team swept Clarkson 7-0 in Newell Field House on Thursday afternoon to improve to 7-7 on the season entering the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association tournament this weekend at Vassar. Andrew Bell and Aaron Cutter both won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0. Aaron Cutter had little difficulty with his opponent, losing just six points in the match, which lasted just under 40 minutes. Mike Wiltshire, Ian Graddock and Adam Cutter also won in straight sets for the Saints, while Neil Cutter came back after losing the first set to win at fifth singles. The Saints also won all three doubles matches. St. Lawrence earned the No. 4 seed in this weekend's UCAA Tournament and will face fifth seed Vassar in the first round. SAINTS LOSE HEARTBREAKER TO RENSSELAER April 21, 2003 - Adam Cutter won a singles match and at first doubles with twin brother Aaron Cutter, but it wasn't enough to lead the St. Lawrence University men's tennis team to a third straight win, as the Saints fell to Rensselaer 4-3 in Troy on Saturday afternoon. The Cutter brothers won their first doubles match 8-2, and combined with Mike Wiltshire and Neil Cutter's 8-1 win at third doubles, the Saints held got the early lead with the doubles point. Adam Cutter won 6-4, 6-4 over Jon Addison at sixth singles for the Saints, but the Red Hawks rallied to win four of the other five singles matches to claim the victory. Ian Graddock also won at fourth singles for the Saints, beating Joe Black 6-1, 6-3. Andrew Bell, Wiltshire and Neil Cutter all came back to win second sets easily after dropping their first set, but all three lost in the third and deciding set. St. Lawrence, now 6-7 on the year, will face Clarkson in Potsdam on Wednesday before heading to Poughkeepsie for the UCAA Tournament on Friday. SAINTS IMPROVE TO .500 WITH WEEKEND SWEEP April 13, 2003 - The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team took a pair of matches against Rochester area opponents Nazareth and RIT over the weekend, improving to 6-6 on the year. The Saints have won three of their last four matches. On Friday, St. Lawrence beat Nazareth 6-1. Andrew Bell had an impressive three set win over Jefferson Dargout at first singles, winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Mike Wiltshire, Ian Graddock, Neil Cutter and Adam Cutter also won singles matches for the Saints. The Saints also claimed the doubles point on Friday, with Graddock and John DeLorbe winning at second doubles and Wiltshire and Neil Cutter winning at the third spot. On Saturday, the Saints faced RIT, defeating the Tigers 5-2. Wiltshire won at third singles, Graddock at fourth, Neil Cutter at fifth and Adam Cutter at sixth. The Saints again claimed the doubles point, with Graddock and DeLorbe winning at second doubles and Wiltshire and Neil Cutter winning the third doubles match. St. Lawrence goes back on the road this weekend to face Rensselaer. SAINTS SWEPT BY SKIDMORE DESPITE SOLID EFFORT April 6, 2003 - Skidmore's men's tennis team swept through St. Lawrence on Sunday afternoon in Newell Field House, but a number of St. Lawrence players had close matches, pressing the Thoroughbreds before falling 7-0. Aaron Cutter led the Saints at second singles, forcing Nate Termin to the limit in the first set before losing 7-5. Andrew Bell also played well for the Saints, losing to Russell Cloder 6-3, 6-3 at first singles. Neil Cutter and Mike Wiltshire led the Saints at second doubles, almost pulling out a win before losing 9-8 (7-2). The Saints fall to 4-6 on the year, and will travel to Rochester this weekend for matches against Nazareth and RIT. SAINTS SNAP LOSING STREAK WITH 5-2 WIN ITHACA April 2, 2003 - St. Lawrence University men's tennis coach Jeremy Freeman shook up the lineup on Wednesday afternoon, and apparently the strategy worked. The Saints beat Ithaca 5-2 in a dual match in Newell Field House, snapping a four-match losing streak. The match, originally schedule for Sammis Tennis Stadium, was moved inside to Newell Field House due to inclement weather. Ithaca started the day by winning the doubles point, but St. Lawrence's Ian Graddock won a quick match at fifth singles 6-2, 6-2 to square the team score 1-1. After Neil Cutter and Aaron Cutter also won in straight sets for St. Lawrence, the team needed just one more point to claim the win. Saints rookie Mike Wiltshire, playing at number three for the Saints, had won the first set in a tiebreaker, and the second set was on serve until Wiltshire broke Mike Medvin's serve to take a 6-5 lead. Medvin, however, broke Wiltshire right back to force a second tiebreaker. Wiltshire came back to win the final four points of the tiebreaker for a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) win to give the Saints the team victory. The sixth singles match did not start at the same time as the rest of the singles matches due to the venue change, but St. Lawrence's Terran Palmer-Angell won his first collegiate dual match 6-1, 6-0. Scott Rubens beat the Saints' Andrew Bell at first singles and also won at first doubles for the Bombers, who fall to 6-5 on the season. The Saints, now 4-5 on the year, will host Union on Saturday and Skidmore on Sunday. Both matches are tentatively schedule to be played at Sammis Tennis Stadium, but will be moved into Newell Field House if weather does not permit outdoor matches. GRADDOCK, CUTTER LEAD SAINTS IN 5-2 LOSS TO HAMILTON
March 29, 2003 - Ian Graddock and Neil Cutter won singles matches in their match with Hamilton, but the Saints were unable to beat the Continentals on their home court, falling by a 5-2 score on Saturday afternoon. Graddock beat Erick Volp 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 at fourth singles, and Cutter defeated Jason Thomas 6-3, 6-4 at fifth singles. The Saints fell to 3-5 with the loss. The team will host Ithaca on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. SAINTS SWEPT BY HOBART IN GENEVA March 28, 2003 - The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team lost to Hobart 7-0 in Geneva on Friday afternoon, falling to 3-4 on the season. Ian Graddock was the only Saint to take a set off a Statesmen, falling to Jimmie Banta 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. The Saints will wrap up the weekend with another dual match against Hamilton in Clinton, NY, on Saturday afternoon. SAINTS SPLIT IN FIRST TWO MATCHES AT HILTON HEAD March 21, 2003 - The St. Lawrence University men's team has returned from the spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. after being swept in their final match over the break. The Saints were defeated 7-0 by Calvin. Aaron Cutter came back to win the second set 6-4 at third singes, but Calvin's Tom Zeilstra won the third set 6-3. Andrew Bell forced two tiebreakers in his match at first singles, but was defeated in straight sets by Calvin's Kevin Van Haitsma. The Saints, now 3-3 on the year, will go on the road to face UCAA oppoenents Hobart and Hamilton this weekend. SAINTS SPLIT IN FIRST TWO MATCHES AT HILTON HEAD March 20, 2003 - The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team has had to dodge rainstorms and tornado watches during their Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina, but did manage to get a pair of matches in earlier this week. The Saints beat Macalester 5-1 in singles matches and the doubles matches were suspended due to darkness. Andrew Bell won at first singles for St. Lawrence, beating Peter Lokin 6-4, 6-3. Aaron Cutter came back to beat David Yesilevskiy 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), (12-10). Adam Cutter and Ian Graddock also won in super tiebreakers, while Neil Cutter won in straight sets. In their only other match of the week, the Saints were swept by Trinity 7-0. Jimmie Ames won at fourth singles and first doubles for the Titans. St. Lawrence's match with Colby Sawyer, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was cancelled. The team will still play a match against Calvin on Friday. CUTTER WINS "B" SINGLES TITLE IN ICEBREAKER INVITATIONAL
Nazareth’s Jefferson Dargout won two titles, claiming the “A” singles title with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) win over Ithaca’s Medvin and teaming up with Ben Klempka to win the “A” doubles title, beating Ithaca’s Scott Rubens and Chris Ciolino 8-2 in the final. The Saints have a break before their next matches, which will take place over Spring Break in Hilton Head. SAINTS OPEN SEASON WITH HOME "ICEBREAKER" February 22, 2003 - The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team opened the 2003 spring season with their home Icebreaker Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Newell Fieldhouse. The six-team tournament consists of three singles and three doubles flights, with 48 athletes competing. After the first day of singles play, Aaron Cutter and Neil Cutter have advanced to the "B" semifinals, and John DeLorbe and Terran Palmer-Angell each won a pair of matches to advance to the "C" semifinals. Four St. Lawrence doubles teams also advanced to semifinal rounds, including Michael Wiltshire and Andrew Bell in the "A" bracket.
