2001-2002 Archives SAINTS NAMED ITA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM; CUTTERS EARN INDIVIDUAL HONORS The Intercollegiate Tennis Association recognized the St. Lawrence University men's tennis team as a 2002 All-Academic Team as the Saints carried a 3.2 team grade-point average in 2001-2002. Rising seniors Aaron and Adam Cutter earned 2002 ITA Academic All-America honors as individuals. Aaron had the best individual record on the team, positng a 10-5 mark at number-four singles. Adam was 5-10 at number-three singles. The Saints followed a tough fall schedule by going 5-7 in their traditional spring season and posted a 5-11 mark overall for 2001-2002. The Saints finished sixth in the UCAA while hosting the conference tournament this season and will return their entire lineup next year. Over the past ten seasons, the St. Lawrence tennis program has gone 70-38, a winning percentage of .648, and has consistently been among the top teams in the UCAA, winning the conference championship in 1998. The men's tennis team starts their non-traditional fall season on September 13 at the Flower City Inivitational. ROCHESTER WINS 2002 UCAA MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP; SAINTS SIXTH (April 28, 2002)-The University of Rochester defeated Skidmore College, 5-1, to win the 2002 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championship hosted by St. Lawrence University, avenging a loss to the Thoroughbreds in last year's UCAA championship. Skidmore was second while Hobart took third in the eight-team field. Rochester cruised through the tournament, taking a 7-0 decision over #8 Clarkson in the opening round and the taking out #5 Rensselaer by the same score in the semifinals. The top-seeded Yellowjackets met third-seed Skidmore in the championship match, taking a 5-1 decision to win the conference title. Colin Ryan, Avinash Reddy, Dan Schoenherr, Brian Shenker and Aaron Arfman all went 3-0 during the tournament while Dan Williford was 2-1 at number two singles. Skidmore advance to the title game with a 6-1 win over St. Lawrence and a 6-1 win over second-ranked Hobart College. Hobart beat Rensselaer in the third-place match, 6-0, while #4 Vassar College finished fifth with a win over host and six-seed, St. Lawrence, 4-2. Union took out Clarkson in the seventh place match, 4-1. SAINTS TENNIS DOWNED BY HOBART (April 21, 2002)-Hobart swept all nine matches and took all seven points in men's tennis action at St. Lawrence University on Sunday afternoon. Hobart won all three doubles matches and took two-set wins in all six singles matches to drop the Saints record to 5-11 on the season. The Statesmen improve to 14-3 overall with the win. Both teams will compete in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association hosted by St. Lawrence University next weekend starting on April 26 and finishing on Sunday, April 28. MEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO RENSSELAER (April 20, 2002)-Rensselaer took the doubles point and that proved to be the difference as the teams split the singles matches, giving the Engineers a 4-3 win over the St. Lawrence University men's tennis team in a Upstate Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at Sammis Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon. Rensselaer swept the doubles matches to take a point at the start of the match and then took the top-three singles matches to take the 4-3 win. The Saints took four through six singles, but fell one point short. Aaron Cutter, who has the team's best singles record at 10-4, cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Borjan Gagoski at number four singles. Ted Thorndike had a little more work to beat Jon Addison at number five. Thorndike dropped the first set, 6-7 (4), but bounced back to take the next two sets, 6-4, 6-3 and up his record to 10-5. John DeLorbe defeated Chris Laptic at number six, 7-5, 6-3, to earn the Saints' third point. Steve Matthews of RPI defeated Andrew Bell at number-one singles, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Ian Graddock lost to Rensselaer's Ben Haynes at number-two 6-2, 6-1, while Adam Cutter fell to Mike Heligman (RPI), 6-4, 6-3, in the three match. The Saints fall to 5-10 on the season and 5-6 in the spring with the loss. They host Hobart tomorrow afternoon at 11 a.m. MEN'S TENNIS CRUISES PAST CLARKSON (April 17, 2002)-St. Lawrence University took all seven points from Clarkson in men's tennis action at Sammis Tennis Complex in Canton on Wednesday afternoon. The Saints even their spring record to 5-5 and are 5-9 overall. The Cutter twins, Adam and Aaron, shutout Clarkson's Matt Rizzollo and Sergey Demidenko in first doubles 8-0. Andrew Bell and Ian Graddock also won easily at number two doubles, beating Aaron Wendt and Ashwin Venkatraman 8-1 while the Golden Knights took third doubles, 8-5, as Samrat Jain and Josh Wendt took out the Saints team of Jon DeLorbe and Ted Thorndike, 8-5. St. Lawrence won all six singles matches, five on them in straight sets. Adam Cutter went three sets at three singles, defeating Venkatraman, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-2. Bell, Graddock, Aaron Cutter, Ted Thorndike and DeLorbe all took singles wins. St. Lawrence is back in action this weekend at home against Rensselaer and Hobart to end the regular season. Sammis Tennis Complex will host the UCAA Championships the following weekend. MEN'S TENNIS DEFEATS DEFENDING EMPIRE EIGHT CHAMPS April 14, 2002-The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team registered a win over defending Empire Eight conference champions, Rochester Institute of Technology, 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Saints improve to 4-5 in the spring season and 4-9 overall. Due to time restraints, the match was played to decision and all third sets were played as super tie-breakers (first to 10 and win by two points). Aaron Cutter improved on his team-best record, recording a 7-5, 1-6, (13-11) win over Noel Camardo at number four singles to improve to 9-5. The Saints three through six players all registered wins to help the team to the win. Adam Cutter took three singles with a score of 6-4, 6-2, over Luke St. Georges. Ted Thorndike won in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, (10-5) at the four game while John DeLorbe improved to 8-6 with a win at the number six game. The Saints next match is scheduled for Saturday, April 20 as they host Rensselaer at noon. MEN'S TENNIS SPLITS OVER WEEKEND April 8, 2002-The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team went 1-1 over the past weekend, defeating Union College 5-2 on Saturday before falling to Skidmore 7-0 on Sunday. The Saints are now 3-8 on the season as Skidmore snapped the team's three-match win streak. The Saints started well against Union, sweeping the doubles matches to earn a single point. At number one, the Cutter twins, Aaron and Adam teamed to defeat Andy Shohelt and Drew Goldstein 8-1. Andrew Bell and Ian Graddock earned a the win at number, 8-4, while John DeLorbe and Ted Thorndike needed an extra set to put away Adam Rosen and Zak Bryden, 9-7. The Dutchmen won at one and two doubles, with Bell losing at the top spot to Shohet, 7-6 (4), 6-4 and Graddock falling at number two, 6-4, 6-2. However, the Saints won every other singles match to take the win. Adam Cutter took out Goldstein easily at number three, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1, straight set win. Aaron Cutter beat Zak Levey nearly as easily with a 6-2, 6-2 win. After dropping the first set at number five, 6-0, Thorndike responded to win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-3, to improve his singles record to 8-4. DeLorbe also improved his record with his straight set 6-2, 6-3, win at number six. Skidmore ended the Saint three-match win streak on Sunday, winning every match on the day. The Saints next match is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, as they take on Rochester Institute of Technology on the road. SAINTS BEAT HAMILTON IN FIRST HOME DUAL MATCH (March 30, 2002)- The St. Lawrence University men’s tennis team won its second match of the season with a 6-1 win over Hamilton in Newell Field House on Saturday afternoon. The Saints swept the opening doubles matches to earn their first point, and Ian Graddock, Adam Cutter and Aaron Cutter won in straight sets to sweep from second to fourth singles to earn the win over the Continentals. The Cutters won their match at first doubles, and Andrew Bell and John DeLorbe won at second singles. The Saints improve to 2-3 overall on the spring season and will travel for another dual match with Ithaca on Wednesday. MEN'S TENNIS 1-3 AFTER SPRING TRIP (March 25, 2002)-The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team defeated SUNY-Oneonta in their first team match of the spring, and then dropped three in a row while in Hilton Head, S.C., for their spring trip. Aaron Cutter and John DeLorbe each posted 3-1 marks in singles play to lead the Saints. St. Lawrence opened the trip with a 4-3 win over SUNY-Oneonta on March 18. Aaron and Adam Cutter had the Saints only win in doubles with a 8-5 win at number one. The Cutter's also tallied wins in singles action, along with Ted Thorndike and John DeLorbe at three through six singles. Andrew Bell lost at number one and Ian Graddock fell at number two. The Saints took on Allegheny College on the following day, dropping a close match, 4-3. St. Lawrence won the doubles point as Bell and DeLorbe teamed at number two to win easily 8-0 and Graddock and Thorndike at number three took a 8-2 win. In singles action, Aaron Cutter and DeLorbe were the only Saints to take wins, at four and six singles. A pair of 5-2 losses followed after that, one to Dickinson and one to Illinois Wesleyan. Against Dickinson, the Saints' Bell and Aaron Cutter each came up with wins. In the loss to Illinois Wesleyan, Adam Cutter and DeLorbe picked up wins in singles with Graddock and Thorndike getting together for their second win at three-doubles on the week. The Saints are 1-3 in the spring season and host Hamilton on Saturday, March 30 with the match scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. ITHACA WINS FOUR OF SIX FLIGHTS AT ICE BREAKER TOURNEY (March 3, 2002)-Ithaca's Mike Medvin and Brian Pare had a hand in winning two flights at the St. Lawrence University Ice Breaker Invitational men's tennis tournament over the weekend. Medvin won the B Singles bracket and also won in the B Doubles bracket. Pare took the C Singles flight and teamed with Paul Lavigne to win the C Doubles flight as well. Ted Thorndike has the best finish of the Saints, losing to Pare in the C Singles championship. RIT's David Chachu won the A Singles flight defeating teammate Joe Neely in the finals of that bracket. The Nazareth duo of Mike Magnone and Ben Klempka teamed to win the A bracket of the doubles competition. Ted Thorndike rolled to the championship match of C singles where he lost to Pare, 7-5, 1-6 and 10-7 in the super tie-breaker. Thorndike rolled over his first round opponent Andy DeSouza 6-2, 6-0, in his first match and took out Lavigne in the semifinals to earn a spot in the championship match of the C flight. St. Lawrence Andrew Bell and Ian Graddock each lost in singles action in the A flight. However, they both came back to win in their consolation matches. In B singles, Aaron Cutter won his first match over RIT's Luke Murray 6-0, 6-3, before falling to Klempka in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-2. Adam Cutter lost to Jeff Sluker in the quarterfinals in a three set marathon, but came back in his consolation match with a 8-6 win. John DeLorbe won his first match of C singles over James Schibuk of Hamilton, 6-1, 5-7 and 10-5 before losing to Pare in the semis. Andrew Bell and DeLorbe rolled over a pair of Hamilton players in A doubles, but fell to eventual A flight champions Magnon and Klempka in the semifinals. The Cutter brothers, Aaron and Adam, lost to Chachu and Murray of RIT in the first round of B doubles, 9-7. Graddock and Thorndike played Pare and Lavigne in their match in C singles, nearly beating them, losing 8-6 in the tiebreaker. The men's tennis team will next see action on their spring break. FIRST VARSITY ACTION AT NEWELL ST. LAWRENCE FALLS TO DIVISION I BUFFALO IN THE FIRST VARSITY ACTION IN NEWELL FIELD HOUSE (October 15, 2001)—The St. Lawrence University men’s tennis team lost to Division I University at Buffalo, 7-0, in the first varsity athletic event held in brand-new Newell Field House. Newell, which holds five tennis courts and a 200-meter track in its field house section, opened in September. Buffalo won all three doubles matches to gain and single point and then swept the Saints in singles action to cruise to the 7-0 win. The Cutters, Adam and Aaron, led at number two doubles before Randy Rocchio and Nick Zieziula of UB came back for the 8-4 win. The Saints fall to 0-4 in their non-traditional season and look forward to their spring trip to Hilton Head, SC, as their next action. THREE SAINTS ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND AT ITA NORTHEAST REGIONAL (October 1): Three players advanced to the second round of the Intercollegiat Tennis Association Northeast Regional hosted by Vassar College over the weekend. Ian Graddock, Adam Cutter and Andrew Bell all registered first round wins in the singles championship draw while Bell teamed with Jon DeLorbe to advance to the second round in the doubles championship draw. New York University's Demetris Leontis, the three-seed in the tournament, won the singles championship draw over teammate Mike Thompson, 6-4, 7-5. Rochester's Colin Ryan and Dan Williford won the doubles championship draw as the three-seed, 8-3, over the top-seeded duo from the College of New Jersey. Graddock won his first round singles match, 6-0, 6-2, over Briam Palmenteri of SUNY New Paltz, while Adam Cutter took a 7-5, 6-1, win over Hobart's Cooper Schmidlapp before falling to the number-five seed in the second round. Bell won 6-1, 6-1, against Jamie Schibuk of Hartwick. Bell and DeLorbe defeated Medvin and Sherman of Ithaca, 8-3, before falling to eventual champions Ryan and Williford in the second round. SAINTS DROP THREE AT FLOWER CITY TOURNAMENT (September 19): The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team dropped three matches at the Flower City Invitational Tournament at Nazareth College over the past weekend. Hobart took the championship by defeating Hamilton 6-1 in the final round. The Saints fell to RIT in the first round 5-2. Aaron Cutter and Ted Thorndike earned points for the Saints. St. Lawrence fell to host Nazareth in the consolation round, 4-3, as Graddock and Thorndike each earned their second wins and John DeLorbe also won. In their final match of the weekend, the Saints were edged by Ithaca, 4-3. Thorndike improved to 3-0 in the fall and Aaron Cutter took his second win of the tourney. The doubles teams of Adam Cutter and Aaron Cutter and Graddock and Thorndike won their doubles matches the earn the Saints a point. The men's team will travel to Vassar this weekend for the ECAC Tournament. FREEMAN COACH OF THE YEAR, THREE SAINTS ALL-UCAA St. Lawrence University men's tennis coach Jeremy Freeman was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association men's tennis Coach of the Year while freshman Ian Graddock was second-team All-UCAA singles and the doubles team of senior Jay Cutter and sophomore Chris Tyler was first team All-UCAA doubles. St. Lawrence went 8-7 in 2001, finishing fourth in the UCAA. Anil Gupta of Union was named the UCAA Player of the Year while Ben Haynes of Rensselaer and Dan Williford of Rochester were the Co-Rookies of the Year. Freeman, in his second season at the helm of the program, led a team with nine sophomores and freshman to an 8-7 record. He has compiled a record of 20-11 since taking over the program and will lose just one senior from this year's team. Graddock, only a freshman, posted the best record on the squad, finishing the spring season 11-4, 2-0 at four-singles and 9-4 at five-singles, improving from just 2-4 in the fall season. Graddock started the season with five consecutive wins and twice had three-match winning streaks. The doubles team of Cutter and Tyler were named first team All-UCAA as they posted a team-best 10-4 doubles record, including a 2-1 mark at the conference championships. Like Graddock, they too reeled off five straight wins to open the 2001 season. Cutter was named the team's most valuable player and Tyler was most improved player as voted upon by St. Lawrence players and coaches. Graddock won the Coaches Award. St. Lawrence returns all but one senior to the team next season and should improve upon the 65-27 mark the team has accumulated over the last nine seasons.
