2000-2001 Archives FREEMAN COACH OF THE YEAR, THREE SAINTS ALL-UCAA St. Lawrence University men's tennis coach Jeremy Freeman was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association men's tennis Coach of the Year while freshman Ian Graddock was second-team All-UCAA singles and the doubles team of senior Jay Cutter and sophomore Chris Tyler was first team All-UCAA doubles. St. Lawrence went 8-7 in 2001, finishing fourth in the UCAA. Anil Gupta of Union was named the UCAA Player of the Year while Ben Haynes of Rensselaer and Dan Williford of Rochester were the Co-Rookies of the Year. Freeman, in his second season at the helm of the program, led a team with nine sophomores and freshman to an 8-7 record. He has compiled a record of 20-11 since taking over the program and will lose just one senior from this year's team. Graddock, only a freshman, posted the best record on the squad, finishing the spring season 11-4, 2-0 at four-singles and 9-4 at five-singles, improving from just 2-4 in the fall season. Graddock started the season with five consecutive wins and twice had three-match winning streaks. The doubles team of Cutter and Tyler were named first team All-UCAA as they posted a team-best 10-4 doubles record, including a 2-1 mark at the conference championships. Like Graddock, they too reeled off five straight wins to open the 2001 season. Cutter was named the team's most valuable player and Tyler was most improved player as voted upon by St. Lawrence players and coaches. Graddock won the Coaches Award. St. Lawrence returns all but one senior to the team next season and should improve upon the 65-27 mark the team has accumulated over the last nine seasons. MEN'S TENNIS FINISHES FOURTH AT UCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS April 29, 2001-- The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team finished fourth at the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association tennis championships, beating Rensselaer in the quarterfinal round before falling to top-ranked Rochester in the semi's and Hobart in the third-place match. Jay Cutter went 2-1 on the weekend at number-two singles and Andrew Bell was 2-1 at number-three for the weekend. St. Lawrence entered the tournament as the number-four seed taking on fifth-seeded Rensselaer in the first round of the tournament. The Saints took the doubles point as the teams of Chris Tyler/J. Cutter and Bell/Adam Cutter won their contests. St. Lawrence then took second through sixth singles, Adam Cutter and Ian Graddock notched two-set sweeps, to take the win over Rensselaer, 6-1. The Saints advanced to the semifinals to take on Rochester. The Yellowjackets, the top-seed in the tournament, defeated #8 Clarkson in the quarterfinal round to advance. Bell picked up the only Saints point in the 6-1 loss. He defeated Dan Schoenherr 6-3, 4-6, (9-7) to win his match at three-singles. Hobart, the three-seed, greeted the Saints in the third-place match. Hobart defeated Vassar in the opening round before falling to second-seed Vassar in the semifinals. Tyler and Jay Cutter won their doubles match 8-6, but Hobart took second and third-doubles to claim the point. Jay Cutter was the only Saint to win his singles match, beating Ryan Tillmore 7-5, 6-3 at number two singles. Adam Cutter lost a three-set heartbreaker, 6-7, 7-5, 5-7, at four singles. Skidmore defeated Rochester in the championship round to take the UCAA crown. SAINTS PREPARE FOR UCAA TOURNEY April 25, 2001- The St. Lawrence men's tennis team will head into this weekend's Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association tennis tournament at Vassar College as the four-seed. The Saints, who went 7-5 through the regular season, will face Rennselaer in their first round match on Saturday, April 28. Rochester is the one-seed and will play #8 Clarkson. Skidmore earned the #2 seed and will play #7 Union, Hobart at #3 will play host Vassar. The tournament starts Saturday morning and will run through to Sunday afternoon. SAINTS OUST NORTH COUNTRY RIVAL CLARKSON April 19, 2001-- The St. Lawrence men's tennis won five of six matches and was leading comfortably in a match that was suspended by darkness as they defeated North Country rival Clarkson University 5-1 on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Saints improve to 7-5 on the season. The Saints took the doubles point by winning all three doubles matches. The team of Chris Tyler and Jay Cutter and the pairing of Andrew Bell and Adam Cutter won their matches easily while Ian Graddock and Aaron Cutter needed a tiebreaker to net the number-three doubles win. In singles action, Tyler, Bell, Adam Cutter, Graddock all had two-set sweeps in #1 through #4 singles. Cutter had the toughest win, posting scores of 7-6 (7-3) and 7-5 to take his point at three-singles. The match between SLU's Aaron Cutter and Sam Jian of Clarkson was suspended due to darkness with Aaron Cutter leading 6-2, 5-2. The Saints will next compete at the UCAA championship on April 28. SAINTS DROP TWO OVER WEEKEND April 16, 2001-- The St. Lawrence men's tennis dropped a pair of matches over the past weekend, 7-0, to Division I University of Buffalo and 4-3 to Rochester Institute of Technology. The Saints look forward to a Thursday meeting with North Country nemesis, Clarkson. Buffalo, a D-I scholarship program, took all seven points against the Saints on Saturday. On Sunday, St. Lawrence took the doubles point against RIT as Chris Tyler and Jay Cutter won their doubles match 8-6, and Ian Graddock and Aaron Cutter won 8-4. Graddock and Aaron Cutter carried their momentum into the singles, taking the Saints only two singles matches. Graddock won at five-singles with a three-set win, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, while Aaron Cutter made easy work of Brian Baver at six-singles, 6-1, 6-0. RIT took the top four singles matches. Tyler fell at one, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, while the other three matches were two-set sweeps by RIT. The Saints fall to 6-5 with the losses. They travel 10 miles north on Route 11 on Thursday, April 19, to take on the Golden Knights of Clarkson at 4:30. SAINTS SNAP LOSING STREAK WITH 6-1 WIN April 7, 2001--The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team posted a 6-1 win over the Union College Dutchmen, highlighted by Chris Tyler's three and a half hour, 7-6 (13-11), 5-7, 6-3, marathon win over Anil Gupta in number-one singles. Union took the doubles point, but St. Lawrence claimed all six of the singles points to post their first win in their last four matches. Gupta was ranked sixth in the East region and 27th nationally in the fall while Tyler was 29th in the East. Tyler took the first set 7-6 with a grueling 13-11 tiebreaker win. Gupta regrouped to win the second set 7-5, but Tyler showed his endurance in the third set. With the match nearly four hours old, Tyler put Gupta away with a convincing 6-3 win in the final set. "That's one of the biggest wins I've witnessed for our team since I arrived here," said Saints head coach Jeremy Freeman. "Gupta is a great player and Chris (Tyler) has come a long way from where he was last season. People that watched Tyler play last season would question his resolve but he has matured greatly this year and he deserved to win because he was the better player." Jay Cutter rolled to an easy 6-2, 6-1 win in the second singles. Ian Graddock and Aaron Cutter also posted two set sweeps, Graddock posting a 6-3, 6-4 win in number-fives over Brian Foy and Cutter with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in six singles against Oliver Collins. Andrew Bell came back from a 3-6 loss in the first set of third singles to win the last two sets 6-1, 6-4. Adam Cutter had a two-set win, 7-5, 7-6 (3) in four singles. The team of Bell and Adam Cutter won their doubles match 7-2, but Union took the other two doubles matches to earn their only point of the day. With the win, the Saints improve to 6-3 on the season after dropping their last three consecutive matches. Their next match is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, as they travel to take on the University of Buffalo. SAINTS DROP THIRD IN A ROW TO HAMILTON (March 31): Hamilton took four singles point to hand the Saints their third consecutive loss of the season on Saturday afternoon to fall to 5-3. After rattling off five wins in their first five matches, St. Lawrence has lost their last three- the last two by scores of 4-3. Chris Tyler and Jay Cutter took first singles 8-4 and Andrew Bell and Adam Cutter won second doubles with the same score to give the Saints the double point. Tyler rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win in number-one singles to improve to 7-1 on the season. Ian Graddock earned St. Lawrence's other single point with a 6-3, 6-3 decision in number-five singles. Adam and Aaron Cutter each fell in tough three-set decisions. HOBART TIPS SAINTS IN TENNIS (March 30): Hobart College earned the doubles point with a pair of victories and the Statesmen went on to a 4-3 win over St. Lawrence Friday, handing the Saints their second straight loss after a 5-0 start. Chris Tyler and Jay Cutter won 8-6 at first doubles, but Hobart won the other two matches 8-1 and 8-4 to earn the doubles point. Tyler beat Andrew Hunt 6-3, 6-1 at first singles, and Jay Cutter posted 6-4, 6-4 wins over Ryan Gilmore at second singles. The other Saint point came from Ian Graddock at fourth singles, who won 6-2, 6-4. Andrew Bell lost 6-0, 6-3 at third singles, Adam Cutter dropped 6-4, 6-1 decisions at fourth singles and Aaron Cutter was beaten 6-2, 6-4 at sixth singles. The Saints will play at Hamilton Saturday afternoon. ST. LAWRENCE ENJOYS EARLY SEASON SUCCESS March 28- The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team is off to an impressive start in the 2001 season, winning their first five matches of the season before falling to Middlebury last week. In singles action, the Saints own an impressive 27-9 match record, a .750 win percentage, while they have a 13-5 match record in doubles. The Saints started the season with a 5-2 win over Ithaca at Leithead Fieldhouse before heading south to Hilton Head, S.C. While there, they rattled off five consecutive wins, including a 7-0 win over Division I LaSalle. St. Lawrence won all but four out of a possible 28 points during the weeklong trip. The spring trip started with a 6-1 win over Scranton followed by a pair of 7-0 whitewashes against LaSalle and Heidelberg. Ohio Wesleyan provided a tougher challenge on March 17, but the Saints came through with a 4-3 win to end the trip with a perfect 4-0 mark. Chris Tyler has posted a 5-1 record at number-one singles aand has teamed with Jay Cutter has a 5-1 record in doubles as well. Jay Cutter, playing number-two singles, is 3-2. Andrew Bell is 4-2 and Adam Cutter is 3-3 in singles action, while they have teamed up for a 4-2 record in doubles action. Ian Graddock, 6-0, and Aaron Cutter, 5-0, have perfect records at five and six singles, respectively. The doubles team of Graddock and Aaron Cutter has a 4-2 record at number-three doubles. Ted Thorndike has a win and a loss in number-six singles. St. Lawrence's only loss of the spring season came on a very fast surface to eighth-ranked Middlebury College on March 21. However, with the early season success, the Saints are well on their way to a solid finish in the UCAA's and beyond. SAINTS WIN SEASON OPENER AGAINST ITHACA (March 3, 2001)--The St. Lawrence men's tennis team won four of six singles matches and the doubles point to take a 5-2 win over Ithaca College at the Leithead Field House. The match was the first of the season for St. Lawrence who will head south to Hilton Head, S.C., next weekend. St. Lawrence took the top three singles matches. Chris Tyler posted a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win in # singles while Jay Cutter and Andrew Bell took just two set to win in the two and three spots. Cutter won by scores of 6-3, 6-3 and Bell won 7-5 and 6-1. Ian Graddock won his first set at number four 6-4 and dropped the second 6-7. Due to the lateness of the match, the third set was played in a tie-breaker format which Graddock won 11-9. In doubles action, Chris Tyler and Jay Cutter took first doubles 8-3 and Andrew Bell and Adam Cutter took second doubles 9-8. SAINTS RANK 14TH IN EAST REGION Nov. 27:-- The St. Lawrence men's tennis team is ranked 14th in the WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis East Region rankings after finishing the 1999-2000 season ranked 17th. The Saints move up in the rankings despite losing four seniors from last year's squad, including their number one and two other starters. Individually, Chris Tyler tops the St. Lawrence roster with a #29 ranking in the region. Williams, MIT and Trinity (Conn.) round out the top three teams int he region. ST. LAWRENCE FIFTH AT FLOWER CITY INVITATIONAL The St. Lawrence men's tennis team finished fifth at the Flower City Invitational hosted by Nazareth College and the University of Rochester. Carnegie-Mellon placed first at the eight team tournament. The Saints, who totaled 31 team points, had a 100% victory rate in opening round singles matches. In the first flight, Jay Cutter defeated Phil Harvilla of Nazareth 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 before falling to Higg Horwell of Alleghany. Cutter also lost his consolation match. Chris Tyler defeated Mike Davis of Nazareth 6-4, 6-4 before falling to John Dymond of Alleghany. Tyler also lost his consolation match. In the second flight, Adam Cutter defeated Cedric Gaddis of Nazareth 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. Cutter lost his next match to Mike Rugger of Oneonta, as well as both consolation matches. Andrew Bell defeated Andrew Baldwin of Nazareth 6-3, 6-0 and Chris Howell of Alleghany 6-4, 6-3 to reach the semifinals, but lost to Oneonta's Ruger 6-4, 6-3. Bell won his consolation match. In the third flight, Ian Graddock defeated Eric Traub of Nazareth 7-5, 6-2. He then fell to Brandon Grove of Alleghany 7-5, 6-4. Graddock won his first consolation match 8-2, but lost the second 8-6. Jon Kaplan defeated Matt Noble of Nazareth 6-3, 6-0. He then took a 6-2, 6-1 win over Justin Weisenthal to reach the semifinals. Kaplan was the only Saint player to make a championship match, defeating Grove of Alleghany 6-1, 6-3 in the semis. He lost to Jon Krauz of the University of Rochester in the Championship match 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. In doubles action, Tyler and Jay Cutter lost their opening round match and won the consolation to go 1-1. Aaron Cutter and Bell won their opening match, but lost both consolation matches. Graddock and Adam Cutter lost their opening match and won their consolation match. SAINTS FALL TO ITHACA, 4-3, IN PRESEASON SCRIMMAGE In a preseason match against Ithaca, the Saints swept the doubles pairings, but dropped the match 4-3. Saint Jay Cutter defeated Paul Lavigne, 6-1, 6-2, in second singles and Adam Cutter rolled past Evan Greenburg of Ithaca, 6-3, 6-2, in fourth singles. In doubles action, the duo of Chris Tyler and Jay Cutter took first doubles, Andrew Bell and Aaron Cutter took second doubles and Ian Graddock and Adam Cutter finished the sweep, taking third doubles.
