SEVEN SAINTS EARN ALL LIBERTY LEAGUE HONORS IN SQUASH

March 17: Senior Dan McElvaine, the all-time Saint leader in wins led a group of seven Saint players who earned all league honors in voting by Liberty League squash coaches.

 

McElvaine was joined on the first team by freshmen Alex Dodge and Tyler Stout and sophomore Nick Pearson. Junior  Scott Redpath, sophomore Ben Ross and senior Dan Shafer were honorable mention selections.

 

Stout and Pearson share the single-season wins record for the Saints with 17 this season and Stout’s 17 wins are a rookie record.

 

McELVAINE, DODGE COMPETE IN CSA INDIVIDUAL NATIONALS

Mar. 2 : Dan McElvaine went 1-1 and Alex Dodge lost both of his matches in the CSA individual nationals at Navy this weekend.

 

McElvaine, seeded 11th in the Malloy Division, beat Colgate's Robert McCary 9-0, 9-5, 9-4 in his first match, but lost to Yale's Naishadh Lalwani, 9-4, 9-0, 9-2 in his second. He finishes his season with a 16-8 record and his career at 58-26 and as the all-time win leader in program history.

 

Dodge lost his opening round game to Colin Campbell of Yale 9-7, 9-2 and 9-6 and fell to John Paul Sardi of Middlebury 3-1 in the consolation round, losing 9-4, 9-3, 4-9 and 9-4. Dodge completed his rookie season with a 13-10 record.

 

 

 

SAINTS CAPTURE SUMMERS DIVISION TITLE AT NATIONALS

Feb. 16: The score was the same, but it was a different winner and with a lot more at stake when St. Lawrence University’s men’s squash team took on Tufts at Harvard on Sunday.

 

Tufts defeated the Saints 6-3 at Yale in mid-January and was ranked as the top seed in the Summers Division at the College Squash Association team nationals in Boston with the Saints the division’s second seed. Both teams held their seeding and advanced to the Summers final on Sunday, and this time the Saints turned the tables, beating the Jumbos 6-3 to win the Summers Division and finish 17 th nationally, the highest finish in program history.

 

The Saints, who finish their team season with a program best 16-6 record, turned back Stanford in their opening match, 9-0 and beat Northeastern 6-3 in the Summers semifinals.

 

In the showdown with Tufts, rookie Alex Dodge at two, junior Scott Redpath at three and sophomore Ben Ross at seven turned around results from the previous match with key victories to help the Saints to the win.

 

Dodge was named Liberty League co-Rookie of the Week and Nick Pearson was named co-Player of the Week for their performances in the national tournament.

 

While senior Dan McElvaine, who holds the Saint record for career wins, lost 3-1 to Jake Gross at one, Dodge earned a wins over Alex Gross at two and Redpath beat John Subranni 3-1 at three. Pearson earned his 17 th win of the season with a 3-0 decision over Kris Leetavorn of Tufts at four and rookie Tyler Stout matched Pearson’s win total with his 17 th over Nelson Schubart in a 3-2 thriller at five. Senior co-captain Dan Shafer won 3-0 at six and Ross came through with a win over Ben Rind, 3-1 at seven to insure the match victory. Thomas Whelan dropped a tough 3-2 match at eight and Nick Calandra lost 3-0 at nine to make it a 6-3 final.

 

In Saturday’s semifinal against Northeastern, McElvaine and Dodge each won 3-0 at one and two and while Chris Birkins of Northeastern beat Redpath in a tightly contested match 9-6, 9-7, 9-7 at three, the Saints won the next four matches, all by 3-0 scores to advance.

 

Pearson won 9-0, 9-5, 9-1 at four, Stout came through with a 9-4, 10-8 , 9-6 win over Pedro Souza at five, Shafer won 9-5, 9-3, 9-1 at six and Ross prevailed 10-9, 9-4, 9-0 at seven. Northestern won at eight and nine with the Saints' Pete Montesano winning 3-0 in the exhibition at ten.

 

The Saints had some tight matches against Stanford in their opening match of the tournament, but won all ten matches played.

 

McElvaine won his opening match at number one 3-1, beating Sam Gould 9-1 and 9-1 in games one and two before Gould came back with a 9-4 win in game three. McElvaine closed it out with a 9-0 win in the fourth game.

 

Dodge, Redpath and Pearson all dispatched their Stanford opponents in three straight in matches two through four and Ross was a 3-0 winner at six.

Stout went four games with Ben Peterson, dropping game one 9-3, but coming back with 9-2, 9-6 and 9-2 wins to take the match. Shafer beat Dave Herbert 3-2 at five, coming from 2-1 down to win the match. Whelan came back from a 2-0 deficit against Ananth Shridar at eight to win 3-2 with 9-4, 9-4 and 9-1 wins in games three, four and five while Calandra was also a 3-2 winner at nine, beating Jon Dunlap 9-6 in the decisive fifth game. Montesano also won 3-2 in the exhibition match at ten.
