SAINTS CHRISTEN COURT WITH 6-3 WIN Feb. 9: St. Lawrence University’s men’s squash team christened its new championship glass court at the Robie Squash Center on Saturday with a 6-3 win over Hamilton College, setting Saint record for wins in a season.
The Saints, 12-6 on the year, will play in the CSA team championships at Harvard beginning Thursday, Feb. 14.
The match included the first competitive matches on the new court which features three glass walls and a spectator gallery. Dan McElvaine became the first Saint player to win on the court, beating Hamilton’s John Dewitt in the battle of number one players 3-0 with 9-6, 9-5 and 9-0 wins.
Hamilton’s Ben Clayman turned back Alex Dodge in the other match on the glass court at two, 3-0, but the Saints took matches three through seven on the regular courts in the Robie Squash Center to set up the team victory, surpassing the program record of 11 set by the 2006 team and matched last year.
Scott Redpath beat Mario Magana of Hamilton 3-1 at three, winning games one and two by 9-1 and 9-2 scores before Magana took a 9-3 decision in game three. Redpath picked up his 11 th win of the year with a 9-4 win in game four. Nick Pearson also went four games, beating John Peters 9-6, 9-6, 0-9, 9-3 for his 14 th win of the year and Tyler Stout matched Pearson’s win total with a 3-0 win over Brett Morell of Hamilton at five.
Dan Shafer turned back Sander Doucette 3-1 at six, winning three straight after dropping game one 9-7 and Ben Ross beat Rick Munschauer 3-0 with 9-6, 9-3 and 9-3 wins.
Tom Whelan lost in four at eight and Nick Calandra fell 3-0 at nine for Hamilton’s other two wins. |
