2005 Liberty League Men's Squash Match Recaps

St. Lawrence swept the field to win the 2005 Liberty League men's squash championship, losing only one individual match en route the championship. Two-time defending champion Hobart was dethroned when Hamilton pulled out a 5-4 win in the first Sunday match and the Saints sealed their championship with a 9-0 win over Hobart in the final match of the tournament.

Hobart 9, Rochester 0
Hobart opened its quest for a third straight Liberty League title with a 9-0 win over the University of Rochester at the Robie Squash Center at St. Lawrence Saturday morning. The Statesmen, who have never lost a match in Liberty League tournament play, won five matches in straight games. Andy Conrad of Hobart beat Ori Goldman of Rochester 3-2 as Goldman came from 2-0 down to tie the match before Conrad prevailed 10-8 in the fifth game at number five and Hobart's Ned Lanphier rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 at seven, 4-9, 7-9, 10-8, 9-0 and 9-1.

St. Lawrence 8, Hamilton 1
The host Saints opened tournament play with an 8-1 win over Hamilton in the Saturday morning match. The Saints won matches one through eight with Andrew Small of Hamilton earning the lone Continental point with a 3-1 win over Thomas Hollingsworth at nine. Rookie Scott Redpath won for the Saints 3-1 at four, dropping his first game to Rick Mayfield, but winning the next three. Saint transfer Dan Shafer also won in four, 3-1 over John Frazier of Hamilton.

Hamilton 6, Vassar 3
Hamilton's men evened their tournament record at 1-1 with a 6-3 win over Vassar in match three of the men's tournament. WHile Anshuman Beri won 3-1 at one for Vassar, Hamilton won matches two through five. Sander Doucette earned a five-game win over Andre Dennis, 9-7, 6-9, 0-9, 9-7, 9-1 in one of the highlight matches. Hamilton closed out the Brewers with wins by Peter Bartholomaus and Andrew Small at eight and nine.

St. Lawrence 9, Rochester 0
The Saints moved to 2-0 in the tournament with a dominating 9-0 win over Rochester Saturday afternoon. In the only match to go to five games, Scott Redpath defeated Dan Carson 9-4, 7-9, 9-3, 6-9, 9-5 at four. Only eight matches were played, as Paul Shin of Rochester forfeited to Marc Amigone of SLU.

Hobart 8, Vassar 1
Hobart won its second match of the tournament with an 8-1 win over Vassar in the final match on Saturday. Two of the matches went to five games, with Hobart winning them both. At three, Brian Shivet beat Andre Dennis in the final match 3-2 - winning the final game 9-7. At seven, Ned Lanphier held on for a 3-2 win over Austin Minkowski. Lanphier took a 2-0 lead, before Minkowski came back to tie at 2-2. Lanphier won the fifth game 9-1.

St. Lawrence 9, Vassar 0
The Saints set up a Sunday afternoon showdown with Hobart with a 9-0 win over Vassar in Sunday's morning match, guaranteeing the host team its best finish in the three years of league competition. The Saints won eight of the nine matches by 3-0 scores with Gene Ziegler of SLU and Akshay Aiyer of Vassar battling it out in a 3-2 match at seven. Aiyer won the first game 9-5, Ziegler took the next two 9-3 and 9-4, but Aiyer won 10-8 in game four before Ziegler finally closed it out with a 9-1 win in game five.

Hamilton 6, Rochester 3
Hamilton won its second match of the tournament in a tight match with Rochester. Rochester won matches one, three and five at the top of the lineup while Hamilton won at two, four and six. The difference was seven through nine where Hamilton;s Andrew Brooks and Peter Bartholomaus won 3-0 and Andrew Small was awarded a forfeit at nine.

Hamilton 5, Hobart 4
Anthony Bardaro came back from a two-game deficit to beat Hobart number one Prateek Patni 3-2 and give the Continentals the 5-4 win. The loss was the first for Hobart after ten straight wins in conference tournament play. Patni won the first two games, 9-3, 9-6, but Bardaro then won three straight 9-5, 9-1, 9-2 with the rest of the mtaches concluded to give Hamilton the dramatic win. Peter Bartholomaus also pulled out a five game win for the Continentals at number nine, beating Graham Gardiner 9-7 in the fifth game.

Vassar 6, Rochester 3
Vassar picked up its first win of the tournament with a 6-3 win over Rochester, winning matches two and three and sweeping the last four. Greg Kantrowitz won 3-1 at two, Akshay Aiyer won 3-1 at seven and Austin Minkowski won 3-1 at eight for the Brewers. Dan Carson won 3-1 at four for Rochester.

SLU 9, Hobart 0
The Saints completed their tournament with only one individual match loss, sweeping Hobart 9-0 to clinch the championship. The Saints won 3-0 in all but one match, a 3-1 win by Gene Ziegler over Ned Lanphier at seven. The Saints' top seven of Dan McElvaine, Jamie McAvity, Keith Merrill, Scott Redpath, Dan Shafer and Ziegler all went 4-0 for the tournament.
