SAINTS EARN CONFERENCE REGULAR SEASON TITLE IN 2007
One of the nation's most successful soccer programs on any level since 1998, the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team earned its ninth conference regular season title and appeared in its sixth consecutive conference tournament championship game under Head Coach Bob Durocher in 2007, as the Saints finished the season with a 9-3-6 overall record and a 4-1-2 record in the Liberty League.
Durocher has guided the Saints to a 218-66-35 record since 1998, a mark which includes a perfect 22-0-0 national championship season in 1999, a 40-game regular season win streak and a 60-game unbeaten streak. The Saints have been a consistent top ten team in the NSCAA rankings, most recently placing sixth in the NSCAA Northeast Regional Poll in 2006.
The Saints made nine straight NCAA tournament appearances from 1998 to 2006 and were the host institution for the 2002 NCAA Division III championship.
They have won four NCAA Northeast titles since 1998 and have been a Northeast finalist 10 times since 1996. The Saints have also won seven Upstate Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season titles since that conference was formed in 1995 and have won both of the UCAA post-season tournaments to determine the conference NCAA bid since that tournament was introduced in 2002. The UCAA became the Liberty League for the start of the 2004-2005 academic year, and the Saints went on to be the first ever Liberty League Season Champions. Since the League's inception, the Saints have been a consistent threat to the other teams in the conference as they have appeared in each of the four Liberty League tournament championship games, taking the tournament title in both 2005 and 2006.
Saints soccer had a modest beginning with a 4-1-0 record in its first season of 1962. That team, coached by then athletic director Tom Cartmill, laid the groundwork for what was to become a perennial conference champion in the 1970s and 1980s. Bob Goodwin took over as Saint coach in the 1963 season and remained as head coach until 1990, compiling a record of 202-138-33 in 27 seasons. Goodwin's teams made NCAA tournament appearances in 1976 and 1981 and won two ECAC titles. They won nine Independent College Athletic Conference championships and appeared in six ECAC tournaments.
Durocher, who was associate head coach in the 1989 season, took over as head coach in 1990 and after a brief transition period, established his program as one of the best in the nation. He had his first winning season as a head coach in 1993 with an 8-4-3 team and his 1994 team won the Empire Athletic Association championship in the Saints' final year in that conference, the first of his 11 conference titles. In his 17 seasons as head coach, the Saints have a 210-73-27 record and his teams have produced 14 individual national All-Americas including the 1999 national Player of the Year, have had 59 spots on the regional All-America team and have dominated the conference all star squads. The Saints play their home games on Sandy MacAllaster Field, a new facility which opened in 2001.
The Saints had their first unbeaten and untied regular season in 1998 and went 16-0-2 including post-season play. The 1999 team went 17-0-0 in the regular season and then became the first team in NCAA Division III history and the ninth men's team among all NCAA divisions to run the table en route to a national title, finishing 22-0-0. Those two teams were a major part of a 40-game regular season winning streak and a 60-game overall unbeaten streak.
