SAINTS, CARDINALS TIE IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

Oct. 23: The #23 St. Lawrence men’s soccer team and the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals battled it out on a very wet Sandy MacAllaster Field Tuesday afternoon, and after 110 minutes of intense play which included two overtimes, the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

The teams appeared evenly matched throughout much of the game. In the first half, St. Lawrence had a slight 6-5 edge in shots, but had a three shot on goal advantage over the Cardinals, who did not have any shots on Saints keeper Emilio Coletta in the first 45 minutes. Senior forward Charlie Bogosian went one-on-one with Cardinal keeper John San Flippo in the 39 th minute of play, but the shot just barely deflected off San Flippo’s gloves and went wide of the goal to keep the Saints off the board.

The second half saw one fewer shot from each team, with the Saints maintaining the edge 5-4 in the last 45 minutes of regulation. But the Cardinals continued to attack the Saints defense and pour on the pressure and had three corner kick opportunities, but were unable to convert.

In the last 20 minutes of the game, Plattsburgh had five shots and was able to contain the Saints to only one, but the buzzer sounded at the end of the second overtime before either team was able to put anything in the net.

Bogosian led the Saints with three shots on San Flippo, while junior forward Kiel Dwyer had two, and senior captain Axel Galeano had one.

Coletta tallied his sixth shutout of the season and made two saves for St. Lawrence. San Flippo, who has only let in four goals throughout the entire season, had his 13th shutout of 2007.

It is the Saints second double overtime tie in a row and their fifth this season. It’s the Cardinals’ third scoreless overtime in 2007. The Cardinals are now 12-2-3.

St. Lawrence, now 8-2-5 overall, will play in their last regular season match on Saturday, October 27th in Brockport, NY and will face SUNY Brockport in non-league play at 3:00pm to prepare themselves for the Liberty League Tournament, which will be held on Sandy MacAllaster Field on November 2nd and 3rd.
