DUROCHER NAMED LIBERTY LEAGUE COACH OF THE YEAR; EIGHT SAINTS AWARDED

ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS

Nov. 1: St. Lawrence University head men’s soccer coach Bob Durocher was selected as Liberty League Coach of the Year Thursday, while eight members of the Saints soccer team earned all-conference honors after winning the Liberty League regular season title this year. In addition, six Saints were named to the 2007 Liberty League All-Academic Team this season.

 

Junior midfielder Paul LaMarca and senior forward and captain Axel Galeano were named first-team all-conference selections, while senior backs Mike Bobbie and Sean Charles and junior midfielder Ryan Moore were named to the second team. Saints keeper and captain Emilio Coletta, a junior, junior midfielder Ian Fairlie, and senior forward David Osorno were honorable mentions.

 

Durocher, who is in his 18th year as the head coach of the Saints men’s soccer program, coached his team to the title in 2007, the ninth regular season title the team has won throughout his tenure. It is the first time since 2004 that Durocher has been the voted Coach of the Year by his colleagues.

 

LaMarca (left) has 17 points (6 goals, 5 assists) in the 2007 season. The Mesa, AZ native leads the Saints in total points, assists, shots, and shots on goal, and is tied for the lead in goals and game-winning goals. Hehas scored at least one point in nine games, including five Liberty League contests, and had five games where he has tallied multiple points for St. Lawrence.

 

Galeano (right), a second year captain for the Saints, has been a consistent leader to his teammates throughout his time as a Saint. He is a player who often sets up plays and creates scoring opportunities for his teammates. He has three assists in 2007, including two in the 2-0 win over Clarkson. The Queens, NY native also assisted the tying goal against RPI.

 

Liberty League Second Team

Both Bobbie and Charles have been strong players for the Saints in the back. Charles has played a major role in the seven shutouts the Saints have had this season. The goal he assisted against SUNY Potsdam tied the game at 2-2 before heading into overtime, with the Saints eventually winning.

 

Bobbie (right) has anchored the back for the past couple of years for the Saints, and this season has been no different. In addition to the outstanding job he has done defensively, Bobbie, a captain for the Saints, has netted seven points in 2007, including 2 goals and 3 assists, which also includes the game winning goal in the game against Clarkson. The Higganum, CT native also assisted the tying goal in the Brockport match and scored the tying goal in the Potsdam game.

 

Moore and Fairlie, have both been impressive midfielders for the Saints the last couple of seasons. In 2007, Moore battled illness throughout much of the beginning of the season and in his first game back since the first couple of weekends, scored the game-winning goal for the Saints against Union College and assisted a goal the following day against Skidmore.

 

Fairlie (left), who has started in all 16 games thus far, hass been the heart of the Saints midfield line, playing defensive center mid throughout the vast majority of the season. This is the first season the Owego, NY native has started in all of the Saints' games.

 

Liberty League Honorable Mention

Osorno is tied with LaMarca in goals for the Saints in 2007 with six, including two game-winners. The Elmhurst, NY native had three goals in the game against Vassar, including one that occurred at only 1:17 into the game. He has a .500 SOG percentage.

 

Coletta, a captain, has played over 1578 minutes in goal this season for St. Lawrence, including eight games that went into overtime and six that concluded after two full overtime periods. He has seven shut outs in his junior season and has made 71 saves and only allowed 13 goals. The Montreal, Quebec native also had three assists this season for the Saints. Coletta is also a member of the Liberty League All-Academic Team.

 

In addition to Coletta, five Saints were named to the Liberty League All-Academic Team for their performance off the field: junior midfielders Marco Falcon-Viale and Dan Quitt, and sophomore midfielders Reed Carr, Yoon Sik Jung and Charlie Mildrum. Student-Athletes with a full year in residence at their institution who carry a 3.2 cumulative grade point average into a season of competition are eligible for Liberty League All-Academic Teams.

 

The Saints, who are the first seed heading into this weekend’s Liberty League Tournament, will face fourth-seeded Hobart on Friday, November 2 nd at 11:00am. The tournament will be held at St. Lawrence University and all tournament games will be played on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
