SAINTS FALL TO KNIGHTS, 2-0 Sept. 8: The St. Lawrence University men’s soccer team was scoreless in their match against SUNY Geneseo Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field. Although the Saints out-shot the Knights 17-15, Geneseo had two more shots on goal than St. Lawrence, and those two shots made all the difference with the Knights winning the game 2-0.
The first half remained quiet until the 33rd minute of play, when Geneseo’s Joey Mort had a corner kick and got the ball to teammate Joe Walter, who fired a shot at Saints keeper Emilio Coletta, who deflected the shot back into the six. Walter was waiting for the ball and got it to the foot of Ben Ariola, who shot it into the net for the first goal of the game and his first goal of the season.
The Saints had six shots, including two shots on goal, prior to the goal being scored in the first half. They were unable to gain their momentum back before the end of the 45-minute period, having only one shot in the last 12 minutes of play, while the Knights nearly doubled their number of shots after Ariola’s goal, evening out the number of shots in the half to eight for each team.
Much like Friday’s game, the Saints came back into the game following half time with a bit more energy, and senior forward and captain Axel Galeano had the first shot of the period within 90 seconds of the start of the half, but Knights keeper Jeremy Reeves made the save, keeping the score at 1-0.
With a little more than ten minutes left in the second half, Knight Nick Prosser got control of the ball after a corner kick by Saint Terrence O’Brien. Prosser stormed down midfield, where he met Coletta with no pressurenear the left post. He shot the ball past Coletta and into the back right corner of the net, bringing the score to 2-0 and insuring the win for Geneseo.
The Saints, now 2-1-1 in the season, will travel to Rochester, NY next Friday, September 14th, to take on the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers in a non-conference match-up, with the game set to begin at 4:00pm. They will then face Elmira Saturday afternoon in Elmira, NY at 2:00pm. |
