SAINTS TIE BROCKPORT 1-1 WITH LATE GAME GOAL Oct. 27: First year midfielder James Stewart netted the tying goal for the St. Lawrence men’s soccer team Saturday afternoon with 1:29 left on the clock in their game against SUNY Brockport in Brockport, NY, where, after two overtimes, the Saints tied the Golden Eagles 1-1.
Brockport took a very early lead, scoring only 4:05 into the first half after Golden Eagle Mike Breman crossed the ball to teammate Bryce Barker, who shot it past Saints keeper Emilio Coletta to put Brockport up on the board 1-0.
While the Golden Eagles led on the scoreboard, the Saints had a 25-13 shot advantage and an 11-6 shot-on-goal edge, but they wouldn’t tie the game until senior Mike Bobbie had a hard service into the six, where the ball deflected off Brockport keeper Jack Burgasser and out in front of the net and to the foot of Stewart, who was able to knock it in at 88:31. It was the St. Davids, ONT native’s second goal of the season.
Both teams remained scoreless in the two overtime periods, with the Saints only allowing one shot in the last 20 minutes of the game.
Sophomore Eric Wolcott had seven shots with three on goal, while senior Charlie Bogosian had five shots and two on goal. Juniors Paul LaMarca, Ian Fairlie and senior David Osorno also had scoring opportunities that were stopped by Burgasser.
Coletta had four saves for the Saints, while Burgasser had ten 10 for Brockport.
The Saints, now 8-2-6 this season, will host the Liberty League Tournament next Friday and Saturday on Sandy MacAllaster Field. They will face fourth-seeded Hobart Friday morning at 11a.m. and will be competing for a spot in the championship game at noon on Saturday. St. Lawrence is the first seed in the tournament after winning the Liberty League regular season title. Hamilton is the number two seed, while Union is the number three seed. |
