TOP SEED UNION HOLDS SAINTS SCORELESS

Union has clinched the Liberty League championship and will host the league tournament on Nov. 4-5. The Saints will enter the tournament as the second seed.

A back and forth duel ensued from the opening whistle and neither team backed down. Chances were few in the first half but quality opportunities. Union 's came first in the 11th minute off a long throw in by Ftorek to Tripp Pietrak who sent a one-timer sailing just over the crossbar.

Eight minutes later St. Lawrence was denied a prime scoring chance thanks to the quick reflexes of Union goalie Rob Kramer. Sean Charles eluded the Dutchmen defense and dribbled in on goal, firing a point-blank shot from 10 yards out. Kramer got a beat on the shot though and turned it aside to keep things scoreless.   Kramer came up big again with five minutes left in the opening half. Chris Lonegan fired a low shot that skipped in on goal but the freshman netminder was there to collect it. In the 64th minute the Saints Steve Watson headed a shot wide off a direct free kick.

Kramer helped his cause in goal by setting up the Dutchmen score seven minutes later. After collecting the ball Kramer sent a quick outlet to Chris Poey at midfield. Poey took a one-touch turn and sent the ball into the penalty area. The ball stood unclaimed as St. Lawrence goalie Emilio Coletta and Ftorek ran on to it to take possession. Ftorek won the footrace and got a head on the ball just as it bounced up off the turf. He flicked it up and over Coletta, who could only turn and watch as the ball rolled in over the goal line.

St. Lawrence kept the pressure on and had one last chance to score the equalizer with under a minute to play off a throw in by Lonegan. Sean Charles collected the ball just inside the penalty box and blasted a one-timer that sailed just over the crossbar.

The Saints outshot the Dutchmen 11 to 6 for the game, and also led in corner kicks at 6 to 3. Coletta made 2 saves for the Saints, and Kramer had 5 saves for Union.

SAINTS TOP KNIGHTS IN SWAMP

Oct. 15: Week long rainy conditions created a quagmire at Clarkson Field as St. Lawrence downed the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team 5-1 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson, which was tied for third in the Liberty League standings prior to Saturday, dropped to 3-8-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play while St. Lawrence remained undefeated with a 3-0-2 mark in the Liberty League and moved to 5-5-2 overall.

The Golden Knights gained the upper hand early on in Saturday's contest when junior Justin Crowley scored his team-high fifth goal of the season on a direct kick from about 20 yards out in front of the penalty area at the 5:12 mark. Crowley shot a low liner that split the Saints' wall and found its way into the back of the net on Clarkson's first shot of the game. The Saints kept up pressure however and scored exactly 11 minutes later when Elliot Savitz connected on a header from just a few yards out on a cross from Nick Mangee. St. Lawrence then took the lead on a similar goal from Chris Lonegan, with Savitz providing the cross from 15 yards out near the end line.

St. Lawrence continued its attack early in the second half as Axel Galeano scored on a pass from Jason Koshi off a direct kick from about 20 yards out. The Saints would pick up two more goals in the final 18 minutes as James Merrill scored an unassisted goal at 72:39 with a low liner shot that deflected off a Clarkson defender in front and Lonegan added another goal a minute later with a chip shot from 10 yards away.

Clarkson goalkeeper David Hennessey was busy in net for the Knights, making 10 saves. Emilio Coletta made six stops for St. Lawrence in the first 81:45 before being relieved by Joey Webb, who didn't need to make a save over the final 8:15. St. Lawrence held a 22-9 advantage in shots through the game, including a 13-6 advantage in the first half. The Saints were also ahead in corner kicks with eight side attempts to Clarkson's two. The sloppy track created numerous slips and falls as six yellow cards were given in the second half.

WATSON EARNS LEAGUE HONOR

Steve Watson was named the Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week for his efforts against Vassar and RPI last week. Waton scored the game winning goal in overtime against Rensselaer on Saturday to help the Saints stay undefeated in league play at 2-0-2. He has been a consistent leader in the backfield all year for St. Lawrence.

SAINTS GET BACK ON TRACK WITH WIN OVER RPI

Oct. 8: The St. Lawrence Men’s Soccer team beat RPI today at home 1-0 in the first overtime period, to move to 4-5-2. RPI is now 6-5-1 after a tough road weekend in the North Country.

The Saints pressed early, with Nick Mangee and Joey Mattina taking shots from 5 yards out in the second minute, but RPI goalie Nick Bochette made two clutch saves to keep the game scoreless. In the 23 rd minute, Chris Lonegan created a one-on-one with Bochette, but again, the goalie came up big for the Red Hawks to preserve the 0-0 knot.

By the end of the first half, the Saints had taken 10 total shots to RPI’s 5. Bochette had saved all six shots on goal, and SLU goalie Emilio Coletta had saved both shots on goal for the Saints.

The second half was fairly uneventful except for the fouls, as only 5 total shots were taken, but both teams racked up 10 fouls a piece.

It would only take one overtime to decide the winner, as Steve Watson scored in the 99 th minute to end the game. He dribbled the ball from 40 yards out down the right half of the field, and created a tough angle for himself for the score. Watson drilled the ball past the outstretched hands of Bochette and found the left corner of the net for the win.

RPI’s Mike Henzel had a great chance to clinch the win for the Red Hawks in the 91 st minute when he created a one-on-one with Coletta, but the SLU goalie came up big for the Saints with a save.

On the game, Coletta earned 4 saves; Bochette made 8 for RPI.

In an eventful first half, that ended with the Saints up 2-1, all three goals were scored by Vassar.

Fotis Anastasiou scored 2 goals for ECSU, and David Sutera had the other, while Richard Bruneau and Carl Segura picked up assists for Eastern Connecticut. Salem State: Leonard Mlati, Yuta Kizaki

Eastern Connecticut: Marcin Kaczerski, Pat Kozloski, Derek Miles

St. Lawrence: James Merrill, Mike Bobbie, Elliot Savitz, Axel Galeano

The Saints will play next Friday and Saturday against Rochester and Geneseo at 4:00pm and 2:00pm, respectively, at Sandy MacAllaster Field in Canton, NY. Geneseo went to the final four last year, and Head Coach Bob Durocher is expecting some great competition this weekend.

SAINTS OVERCOME EASTERN CONNECTICUT, 2-1, IN OVERTIME

Sept. 3: Freshman Paul LaMarca made the game winning goal in the 5 th minute of overtime to drive the Saints over Eastern Connecticut. Elliot Savitz pushed the ball to teammate James Merrill who sent a beautiful cross to LaMarca in front of the net. LaMarca dove and headed the ball past the outstretched hands of ECSU goalie Marcin Kaczerski for the win.

Things did not look good for St. Lawrence as they fell behind just 6 minutes into the second half on a goal from Eastern Connecticut’s Brian Clark, assisted by Elvis Perndoj. It wasn’t until 86:11, that Nick Mangee sent a corner kick into the goalie box where it met Chris Lonegan. Lonegan headed it down to freshman Ian Fairlie who then booted it into the net for the tie.

In the first half of play, SLU took 12 shots to Eastern Connecticut’s 2. The two Warrior goalies who played in the first half, Jay Barney and Marcin Kaczerski respectively, each made two saves. Kaczerski made a crucial diving save on a shot by freshman Joey Mattina with just 30 seconds remaining.

Freshman Emilio Coletta made 4 saves in the net for SLU. Barney had 2 saves before he was replaced by Kaczerski, who had 9.

The Saints will face Salem State tomorrow at noon at Sandy MacAllaster Field. Eastern Connecticut will play Clarkson. Earlier today, Clarkson lost to SalemState 5-2.

JORDAN JAMES JOINS SAINT COACHING STAFF

Jordan James returns to the Saints as an assistant coach for the 2005 season after a very successful goalkeeping career at St. Lawrence.

James finished his season with the Wilmington Hammerheads, a USL 2nd Division team, last summer. He recorded the second lowest goals against average in the 2nd Division .90. James was Runner Up for the Goalkeeper of the Year Statistical Award, and a 2nd Division Semi-Finalist.

In 2004, James played for the Albany Black Watch Highlanders where he played in 15 games and recorded 4 shutouts. He ended with a record of 12-3-3, which was a franchise record, and was 4th in goals against, 2nd in goalkeeper wins, and 3rd in goals against average, recording 70 saves on the year.

At St. Lawrence, James played in 44 games and had an overall record of 36-5-3. His career goals against average was .57, and he recorded a .820 save percentage. James earned 24 shutouts, second only to the now professional player Greg Sutton. In 2003, he recorded a school record 13 shutouts, was a NSCAA Recgional All American 1st Team, made the UCAA All Tournament 1st team, the Lotto Classic All Tournament 1st team. In 2004, James was a senior captain, a NSCAA Regional All American, and Liberty League First Team. His team went to the final four in 2002, and was the regional finalist in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

James will also be helping with the Women's Soccer Team at SLU.

SAINTS READY FOR ACTION THIS WEEKEND

The Saint men’s soccer team will embark on a quest for an eighth straight NCAA tournament appearance when it opens the 2005 season against Eastern Connecticut State College in the second game of the 2005 Lotto Invitational Tournament at SLU’s MacAllaster Field Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson will play Salem State in the first game of the round-robin tournament at 2pm on Saturday with the Saints kicking off their season at 4 p.m. The Saints and Salem State will play Sunday at noon with Clarkson and Eastern Connecticut to follow.

The Saints enter the season-opening tournament ranked 12 th nationally in pre-season polls and have a nucleus of players returning from last season’s 16-3-1 team which lost in overtime to Williams in the regional final. The Saints have made eight NCAA tournament appearances since 1996 including the last seven years in a row and have hosted the regional every year since 1998. They have a 121-11-8 record during that seven year span. While several top players return from last season’s 16-3-1 team, the Saints will have a large contingent of newcomers vying for playing time and will have a rookie in goal for the first time in several seasons. Jordan James, who had a 0.59 goals against average, playing every minute in goal last season, will be back with the Saints, but as an assistant coach when his professional season ends with the Wilmington Hammerheads. Joey Webb, an all state selection from Pleasant Grove, Utah and Emilio Coletta, a member of the Canadian National Team pool and an all star from Montreal will vie for the starting position.

The rest of the Saint lineup will be a blend of experience and talented newcomers. Steve Watson, a second team NSCAA All America last year and the Saints’ leading scorer with 13 goals and an assist for 27 points, returns and is a top candidate for a second straight Liberty League Player of the Year Award. Watson is a standout in the backfield, but also moves up to become a potent scorer on offense. Graduate student Jason Koshi joins midfielders Nick Mangee and Elliott Savitz and forward/midfielder Gil Schaper among the three-year veterans of the Saint program.

Junior Charlie Bogosian and sophomore David Orsono were also key offensive contributors last season and with help from the current rookie crop will try to pick up the scoring slack created by the graduation of a dozen seniors from last year’s team.
