QUITT EARNS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONOR

 

Nov. 2: Dan Quitt earned Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors for his effort against SUNY New Paltz on Friday afternoon. He scored his first collegiate goal, and it was the game winner in the 4-1 decision over New Paltz.

 

SAINTS GET FOUR GOALS FROM DIFFERENT PLAYERS IN 4-1 WIN

 

Oct. 28: The St. Lawrence Men’s Soccer team beat New Paltz today at Albany St. 4-1 to advance to 7-7-2 on the year. The Saints closed out their Liberty League season 4-1-2. SUNY New Paltz falls to 6-12 overall.

 

By the end of the first half, the score was 2-0 Saints, as SLU received goals from James Merrill and freshman Dan Quitt. Merrill scored at 29:05 on an assist from Sean Charles; Quitt scored seven seconds before the half on a ball from Steve Watson.

 

New Paltz scored to make the game close in the 63 rd minute on a goal from Greg Foss. The assist went to Chris Pendergast.

 

Just five minutes later, David Osorno scored for the Saints on an assist from Merrill to make it 3-1 SLU. In the 86 th minute, freshman Ryan Moore scored on a ball from Nick Mangee, and the Saints would finish the game 4-1.

 

Overall, SLU took 17 shots to New Paltz’s 5, but the corner kicks were tied at 3 a piece. Emilio Coletta got the start for the Saints, and made 2 saves, while the New Paltz goalie made 5 saves.

 

The Saints will play their next game in the Liberty League tournament on Nov. 4-5. They open on Friday, Nov. 4 th against Hamilton at 1:30 pm at Union College. The championship game will be on Saturday, Nov. 5 th at 2:00 pm.

 

SAINTS FALL TO PLATTSBURGH, 3-0

 

Oct. 26: The St. Lawrence men’s soccer team lost to Plattsburgh today 3-0 to close out their home season. Overall, the Saints are 6-7-2, 4-1-2 in league. Plattsburgh is now 16-1-0 overall.

 

The Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half on two goals from Pat Simone. Fifteen minutes into the game, Brandon Gilkes took a shot on goal that was saved by SLU goalie Emilio Coletta, but Simone was there and booted the rebound into the net for the lead. Then, in the 27 th minute, Simone took a shot on goal that was saved, and again got a foot on the rebound and pushed it through.

 

The Saints’ best chance came with 12 minutes left in the half. Steve Watson beat a defender and took a shot that was deflected by Plattsburgh goalie Zach Manning who was coming out to make the save. The ball rolled all the way to the goal line, but did not have enough momentum to break the plane. James Merrill dove in to punch it through for SLU, but Manning was able to get back and clear the ball just as Merrill went crashing into the net.

 

At the end of the first half, both teams had taken 7 shots, and the Saints had the advantage on corners at 5 to 3.

 

In the second period with ten minutes left in the game, the Saints had a goal reversed when a corner kick by Nick Mangee was bumped into the net by a Plattsburgh defender, but there was a foul in the box that negated the score.

 

In the 85 th minute, Plattsburgh’s Tim Stanley received a ball in the box and took a quick shot that was batted down by Coletta, but Stanley booted the rebound into the net to give the Cardinals the 3-0 finish.

 

For the game, SLU outshot the Cardinals 20 to 12, and had the advantage on corners at 9 to 7, but they could not convert.

 

Coletta knocked down 5 saves for the Saints; Manning had 8 for Plattsburgh.

 

The Saints next game will be Friday at 3:00 at Albany State vs. New Paltz.
