WATSON EARNS LEAGUE HONOR

Steve Watson was named the Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week for his efforts against Vassar and RPI last week. Waton scored the game winning goal in overtime against Rensselaer on Saturday to help the Saints stay undefeated in league play at 2-0-2. He has been a consistent leader in the backfield all year for St. Lawrence.

SAINTS GET BACK ON TRACK WITH WIN OVER RPI

Oct. 8: The St. Lawrence Men’s Soccer team beat RPI today at home 1-0 in the first overtime period, to move to 4-5-2. RPI is now 6-5-1 after a tough road weekend in the North Country.

The Saints pressed early, with Nick Mangee and Joey Mattina taking shots from 5 yards out in the second minute, but RPI goalie Nick Bochette made two clutch saves to keep the game scoreless. In the 23 rd minute, Chris Lonegan created a one-on-one with Bochette, but again, the goalie came up big for the Red Hawks to preserve the 0-0 knot.

By the end of the first half, the Saints had taken 10 total shots to RPI’s 5. Bochette had saved all six shots on goal, and SLU goalie Emilio Coletta had saved both shots on goal for the Saints.

The second half was fairly uneventful except for the fouls, as only 5 total shots were taken, but both teams racked up 10 fouls a piece.

It would only take one overtime to decide the winner, as Steve Watson scored in the 99 th minute to end the game. He dribbled the ball from 40 yards out down the right half of the field, and created a tough angle for himself for the score. Watson drilled the ball past the outstretched hands of Bochette and found the left corner of the net for the win.

RPI’s Mike Henzel had a great chance to clinch the win for the Red Hawks in the 91 st minute when he created a one-on-one with Coletta, but the SLU goalie came up big for the Saints with a save.

On the game, Coletta earned 4 saves; Bochette made 8 for RPI.

The Saints next game is at Clarkson on Oct. 15 th at 1:00pm to continue Liberty League action.

SAINTS TIE VASSAR IN MISERABLE CONDITIONS

Oct. 7: The St. Lawrence Men’s Soccer Team tied Vassar today 2-2 in cold, rainy conditions at Sandy MacAllaster Field to move to 3-6-2 overall, 1-0-2 in Liberty League.  With the tie, Vassar is now 3-5-2 on the year, 0-3-1 in conference.

In an eventful first half, that ended with the Saints up 2-1, all three goals were scored by Vassar.

Vassar was awarded a corner kick one minute into the game, and Ben Fox cashed in on the ball from Francesco Galetto, heading it into the lower left corner of the net for the lead.

In the fourth minute of the game, Savitz shot a ball from 2 yards out that was saved by Vassar goalie Jason Cetel, but was then headed in by Michael Kennett.  Then, with 8:34 left in the first half, Osorno booted a ball into the goalie box and two Vassar players slide into it for the save.  Gray Schweitzer kicked it past their goalie into the net to give the Saints the lead.

The Saints had two other great chances for goals, the first coming on a free take.  Nick Mangee lined up and took the kick, booting it over the wall, but Cetel got a hand up, diving backwards, to punch it over the crossbar for the save.  SLU was awarded a penalty kick, and senior captain Steve Watson stepped up to take it.  He shot it toward the lower left corner of the net, but Cetel guessed right and blocked it for the save.  Watson had another chance later in the half, but his shot skimmed off of the left post for the near miss.

In the 50th minute, Court Steiner took a cross from Adam Marsh and drilled it past a few SLU defenders into the bottom left corner of the net.

The game would not be decided in regulation, and at the end of 90 minutes, the score was knotted at 2-2.  Heading into overtime, the Saints had 8 corners to Vassar’s 1, and had taken 11 shots to the Brewers 4.

The best chance in overtime came with less than 2 minutes left in the Vassar goalie box.  The Saints had a pair of crosses, but could not convert.  Time would eventually expire to mark the end of competition.

On the day, freshman goalie Joey Webb made 3 saves, Cetel had 5 saves in the effort.

The Saints return to action tomorrow at home against RPI at 2:00pm.

SAINTS FALL TO POTSDAM, 1-0

Oct. 1: The St. Lawrence men’s soccer team lost today to SUNY Potsdam 1-0 on the road. The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team picked up their second win of the season in as many games, as the Bears downed local rival St. Lawrence University by a final of 1-0. The Bears improve to 2-6-4 and SLU drops to 3-5-1.

The Bears were stifling on defense as they allowed St. Lawrence only 4 shots on goal for the game. Play entered the half at a 0-0 tie. The Bears scored their first goal against St. Lawrence in 3 years at the 80 minute mark, when Travis Carey booted in a ball that rebounded off the SLU goalkeeper. Sean Rumney,

who took the original shot, was credited with the assist.

This marks the first win over the Saints since 1992, when the Bears won 2-1. This is also the first win over SLU for Potsdam coach Joe Vaadi, who has been the head coach for 10 years.

Emilio Coletta made 3 saves for the Saints. Potsdam goalie Tyler Lattimore notched 4 saves and the win.

SLU will play Vassar at home this Friday at 4:00pm to return to Liberty League action.
