GENESEO TOPS SAINTS, 4-2

Sept. 10: The St. Lawrence Men’s Soccer team lost a hard fought game today to visiting Geneseo, 4-2. The last time the Blue Knights were on Sandy MacAllaster Field, they beat powerhouse Williams to advance to the final four in the NCAA tournament. The Saints were eager to claim revenge, but fell short.

In the 11 th minute of play, Geneseo’s Patrick Occhiuto lofted a ball from the left corner of the field that floated over the outstretched arms of SLU goalie Emilio Coletta to begin the scoring. At 27 minutes, Joe Walter of Geneseo scored on an assist from Matt Robinson in front of the goal to push the game further out of reach.

The tide turned in favor of the Saints in the 33 rd minute when James Merrill scored an unassisted goal that put SLU within 1. By the end of the first half, it looked like St. Lawrence had regained the momentum and were about to make a push for the tie, but Yoshi Morimoto dashed SLU’s hopes with another Geneseo goal with less than three minutes left in the half.

The Saints would pull within one goal on a flip throw by Chris Lonegan in the 57 th minute that found Steve Watson in the goalie box. Watson headed it into the net to make the score 2-3. SLU continued to push, outshooting the Blue Knights10 to 9 on the day, and 5 to 2 in the second half, but a final goal by Geneseo’s Dan Verbanac with less than 6 minutes to play sealed the deal for the Blue Knights.

The Saints will be looking to improve their record next weekend when they face RIT and Cortland. They will play at RIT on Friday, Sept. 16 th at 4:00 pm; and will then compete against Cortland on Saturday, Sept. 17 th at 2:00 pm.

SAINTS SLIP, ROCHESTER WINS 1-0

Sept. 9: The St. Lawrence men’s soccer team lost this afternoon to a tough Rochester team which came into this game ranked 12 th nationally. Despite a #5 ranking, the Saints failed to score, and lost 1-0.

In the first half of play, Rochester’s Gary Stom scored to give the lead to the Yellowjackets at 31:58. The Saints were out-shot 11 to 2, and SLU goalie Emilio Coletta saved 6 of 7 shots on goal. The Saints had a couple of chances to even the score with some nice crosses from the sides, but could not connect to push one through.

In the second half, the Saints had a great chance to tie it up and push overtime, but a shot by senior captain Gil Schaper went just wide right and hit the post, bouncing out of play. Overall, Coletta saved 7 shots for the game; Rochester goalie Paco Corbalan notched 1 save.

The Saints will face Geneseo tomorrow at Sandy MacAllaster Field at 2:00pm. Geneseo came out of the NCAA Quarterfinals that were held at SLU last year to make it to the final four.
