SAINTS ROUT CURRY 17-3 IN WINTRY HOME OPENER

Mar. 5: Neither snow nor sleet proved to be enough to keep all but the goaltender from wearing short pants as St. Lawrence University’s men’s lacrosse team downed Curry College17-3 in the earliest, and for a while snowiest, home opener in Saint lacrosse history.

The game was actually delayed an hour to let a heavy snow squall clear the area and work crews to fully clear the field, but the teams faced off under a combination of light snow and sleet at 2 p.m.

“We’ve played some games in April that were snowy and cold,” said Saint coach Mike Mahoney. “We did catch a break though in that it stopped early enough for our grounds crew to get the field ready to go.”

Once the field was ready, so were the Saints as they raced out to an early lead and were never seriously threatened by the Colonels, who were supposed to open their season at St. Anselm on Thursday, but had that game postponed. “Curry came a long way to play the game, but we weren’t going to jeopardize any of the players if the conditions were such that it would have been dangerous to play. Fortunately it wasn’t too bad after the wait. Thank goodness for artificial turf and Fletch (Steve Fletcher, who takes care of the Saint athletic fields)” said Mahoney.

Sophomore attackman Nick Mastine had four goals and an assist and freshman attackman Kevin Russell had two goals and five assists to lead the way for the 12 th-ranked Saints, who improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead on two goals by Russell and singles by Willie Lapinski and Derek Hansen in the first 9:01 of the game. Ryan Rooney got Curry on the board with the first of his two with 4:44 to go in the first, but Mastine scored 40 seconds later and then set up Hansen for a 6-1 lead after one.

The Saints led 9-2 at the half and tacked on seven more goals in the third to coast to the victory. The Saints played all three goaltenders with Justin Demuth earning credit for the win with one first half save. Senior Brendan Dooley played the third period and freshman Frank Maguire had two saves in the fourth quarter. Colin Kott made 14 saves and Alex MacMillan had one for the Colonels.

The Saints will play at Cortland on Saturday before heading to Florida for a pair of spring break games under warmer conditions.

YOUNG SAINTS FACE TOUGH TEST
IN 2005

Feb. 24: With just four seniors, Saints Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach Mike Mahoney has a young team this season. Coach Mahoney will be looking to those seniors to help lead his young team through a tough 2005 schedule. Despite their youth, the Saints enter the season ranked 12th by Inside Lacrosse Magazine and 18th by Lacrosse Magazine.

“We’re a very young team,” said Coach Mahoney. “The critical part of the early season will be to get the new guys game experience.”

With the quality of competition on the Saints non-league schedule, Coach Mahoney feels his team will be ready when they start league play on April 2 when they face-off against Union. The Saints open the season against Hartwick on Sunday, February 27 in Hamilton, N.Y. The Hawks went to the ECAC’s last year, falling in the championship game to Ithaca. Cortland is ranked fourth in the Inside Lacrosse pre-season poll and Bowdoin is one of the top teams in the NESCAC.

Their schedule will not get any easier once the Saints begin Liberty League play. Clarkson is the defending tournament champion, while Hamilton and RPI are traditionally strong programs. Coach Mahoney expects Union and Skidmore to be much improved over last season.

The defensive half is where the majority of the Saints experience lies. Two goaltenders and the bulk of 2004’s starting defense return for the Saints this season. Captain Tripp Bartlett, a 2005 Inside Lacrosse Pre-season All-America, will lead the Saints defense this season. In 2004, he was a second-team all-league selection and was named to the all-tournament team. Bartlett helped the Saints compile a 7.64 team goals against average and scooped up 23 ground balls last season. Moore will get help from sophomore Andy Centauro, who was also a second-team all-league selection a year ago. Also returning on defense are Brian Crowley and John Loftus. Crowley was a second-team all-league selection as a freshman in 2004. Loftus was a second-team selection in 2003 and returns to the Saints after a year abroad.

Coach Mahoney will look to Captain Alex Moore to provide leadership on offense. In 2004, Moore was a first-team all-league selection and a third-team All-America selection by Inside Lacrosse. In December he was named a 2005 Pre-season All-American by Inside Lacrosse. Last season, he was second on the team with 41 points, including 28 goals. On the attack, Nick Mastine is the lone returner after a very solid freshman season. He was tied with Moore with 41 points in 2004 and was second with 29 goals. Coach Mahoney will look to Mastine to lead the attack unit.

Senior Brendan Dooley and sophomore Justin Demuth return in goal for Coach Mahoney. He expects Dooley and Demuth to battle for the starting position.

Dec. 17: St. Lawrence University senior midfielder Alex Moore has been named a third-team pre-season All America by Inside Lacrosse and junior defender Trip Bartlett was named to the honorable mention list.

Moore, who was an honorable mention All America at the end of last season, was tied for second in scoring for the Saints with 28 goals and 13 assists for 41 points as SLU won the conference regular season title and went 11-3 on the season.

Bartlett helped the Saints compile a 7.64 team goals against average and scooped up 23 ground balls last season.

The Saints will open their 2005 season against Hartwick on February 26 at a neutral site which has yet to be determined.
