GENESEO TIPS SAINTS IN ECAC TITLE GAME ON LAST-MINUTE
MAN-UP GOAL

May 11 — Mark Engel scored a man-up goal with 53 seconds to play to lead Geneseo to a 10-9 win over two-time defending champion St. Lawrence in the championship game of the ECAC Upstate men’s lacrosse tournament on Sunday afternoon on North Country Field.

Engel received a pass from Tim Killoran right in front of the St. Lawrence net and buried it by the right post to give the Knights their seventh lead and final lead of the afternoon.

The Saints had possession of the ball once in the final minute, but turned it over with an errant pass.

Chris Stock led Geneseo with three goals to earn Most Valuable Player honors. Killoran and David Hilfinger each scored two goals and added an assist for the Blue Knights, who finish the year 13-3.

Geneseo never trailed in the game, with Killoran opening the scoring just 1:23 into the game. The Saints didn’t let up, however, tying the contest on five occasions.

Geneseo led 6-5 at halftime, taking the lead as time expired on a restart from the left side of the field with two seconds on the clock. Hilfinger took the ball and threw it in front of the net, and it appeared to bounce off St. Lawrence goaltender Stephen Salotti and in as the horn sounded.

Alex Moore tied the game for St. Lawrence early in the third quarter, but Stock book ended a three-goal run in just 50 seconds of playing time to give Geneseo a 9-6 lead, their biggest of the game.

St. Lawrence responded with the next three goals, as Moore again tied thegame for the Saints with a sidearm shot through Geneseo goaltender Andy Howk’s legs.

Moore led the Saints with four goals, while Josh Feine scored two goals and added an assist. Rob Russell also had three points for the Saints, scoring a goal and adding two assists.

Howk made 24 saves for the Blue Knights, while Salotti stopped 12 shots for St. Lawrence, which finished the season 12-4.

SAINTS, GENESEO WIN; WILL PLAY FOR ECAC TITLE

May 10 — The St. Lawrence University men’s lacrosse team will be playing for their third consecutive ECAC Upstate championship on Sunday afternoon.

The Saints, the top-seed and host of the tournament, advanced to the championship game with a 15-11 win over No. 4 seed Hartwick on Saturday afternoon on North Country Field. The Saints will face No. 2 Geneseo, which advanced to the championship game with a 12-9 win over third-seed RIT.

St. Lawrence 15, Hartwick 11

After a tight first quarter, the Saints broke away from the Hawks, outscoring Hartwick 10-4 in the second and third quarters to take a 12-5 lead into the final frame. Peter Dolan led the Saints with six goals, three in each of the second and third quarters.

St. Lawrence continued to pull away in the fourth quarter, at one time holding a 15-6 lead. Hartwick scored the final five goals of the game, but all five came with less than three minutes to play and time ran out before the Hawks could get any closer.

Two-time All-America goaltender Stephen Salotti frustrated Hartwick all afternoon, stopping 20 shots while allowing seven goals before resting for the final two and a half minutes of the game. Many of Salotti’s saves came early, allowing the Saints to pull away. He made 14 first half saves, helping the Saints build a 7-3 haltime lead.

Rob Russell also had a big day for the Saints, scoring two goals and adding four assists to match Dolan's point total on the afternoon. Alex Moore added two goals and two assists, and Tim Loveless and Mike Palladino each scored twice. Timmy Barnhorst also scored a goal for St. Lawrence, which improved to 12-3.

Hartwick was led by Ryan Maloney, who scored six of the Hawk’s 11 goals. Mike Debrossy and Brett Raboy each added a goal and an assist for Hartwick, which finished the season 8-6.

Geneseo 12, RIT 9

The Blue Knights raced out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back, matching RIT every step of the way to hold on to a victory in the semifinal round. Five different players scored during the run, and two of the goals came just seconds after the previous goal as the Blue Knights won the faceoff and scored on the ensuing play.

RIT got within two of Geneseo with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but Tim Killoran’s insurance goal with under three minutes to play put the game away for the Blue Knights.

Dave Spennacchio led a balanced attack for Geneseo with three goals and an assist. David Hilfinger added two goals, and Chris Stock and Chris Kelley each scored a goal and added two assists. Nine players scored goals for Geneseo, and 11 players recorded a point.

David Thering scored four goals for RIT, while Chris Copeland scored three goals. Ryan Neward scored two goals and added two assists. Andy Howk made 13 saves for Geneseo, now 12-3 on the season, while Jon Sinclair made 10 saves for the Tigers, who finish the year 7-8.

DOOLEY, MAN-UP OFFENSE BEAT POTSDAM ON SENIOR DAY

April 26 - The St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team won their final regular season game of the season 12-6 over Potsdam thanks to a potent man-up offense and solid goaltending from sophomore Brendan Dooley on Senior Day on North Country Field.

Dooley, who has served as the backup for two-time All-America selection Steve Salotti for the last two seasons, came into the game twice for Salotti. The first appearance was brief after Salotti was shaken up after a collision with a Potsdam player. But Dooley's second appearance of the game came with just over nine minutes remaining in the third quarter and lasted until the game ended. Dooley finished with 15 saves, as the Saints held off the Bears after building a 10-4 lead through the third quarter. St. Lawrence built the lead using an efficient man-up offense, scoring four goals on five opportunities.

Tim Loveless capped the first half scoring with a goal from Zebrowski's right with just 16 seconds remaining in the second quarter. After a fluky Clarkson goal on what appeared to be a pass early in the third quarter, the Saints settled down and Russell restored the Saints five goal lead with a man-up goal from the top of the box. Dolan had perhaps the most impressive goal of the day, rolling a shot from 12 yards away through Zebrowski's legs after being pestered by Clarkson defenders all over the attack zone. Defenseman Dave Bromall scored his first goal of the season to start the late comeback. Peter Dolan won the ensuing faceoff and scored just eight seconds later to cut the lead to 9-8. Matt Silverio helped Hamilton build the lead, scoring four goals for the Continentals. Jason Mleczko helped Hamilton stay in the game early, stopping 16 shots, including eight in the first quarter in which St. Lawrence held a 13-5 shot advantage. March 25 - Stephen Salotti made 14 saves to become the Saints all-time saves leader, and Peter Dolan scored four goals, an assist, and won all eight of his faceoffs to lead the eighth-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 15-5 win over Oswego on a rainy Tuesday afternoon on North Country Field. Salotti, a two-time honorable mention All-America, held Oswego at bay while the Saints raced to an 8-2 halftime lead. Dolan sparked the Saints offense from the start, winning the opening faceoff, then scoring just 1:20 into the game. He added two more goals before halftime, including one where he broke free of an Oswego defender with a quick 360-spin move. Salotti, who now has 767 career saves, did make a number of impressive stops on Tuesday. But his defensemen also came to his aid a number of times, getting to loose balls and forcing turnovers. Starting defensemen T.J. Landers and John Loftus combined for 11 ground balls, while defensive midfielder Dave Bromall added five. Josh Feine scored three goals and added two assists for the Saints, Alex Moore scored twice, and Tim Loveless added a goal and three assists. Rob Russell scored a goal and two assists, and Bromall had two assists. David DeGroff and Mike Palladino also scored goals for St. Lawrence, and rookie attack Shawn Mayo-Pike scored his first collegiate goal. Scott Ferguson led Oswego with two goals, and Brian Dautrich, Tim McNulty and Adam Phelps also scored for the Lakers, now 2-4 on the season. The Saints outshot Oswego 46-23, and St. Lawrence went 2-for-5 in man-up situations while holding the Lakers to just 1-for-7 with the extra attacker. THIRTEENTH RANKED SAINTS WIN AGAIN WITH LATE GOALS BY DOLAN AND RUSSELL

Dolan gave the Saints the lead again with less than four minutes to play, and Russell added an insurance tally with 39 seconds left.

Russell finished with a goal and four assists, and Moore had three goals and an assist. Tim Loveless scored three goals, Dolan added two, and David DeGroff scored his first goal of the year.

Stephen Salotti made 17 saves in goal for St. Lawrence, while Kevin Welinsky made 14 saves for Elmira. The Saints, now 2-0, will play a pair of games during spring break in Florida, facing 16th ranked Bowdoin and Roger Williams.

RUSSELL, SALOTTI LEAD SAINTS TO 10-3 WIN OVER #5 CORTLAND IN SEASON OPENER

March 2 - Rob Russell scored three goals and Steve Salotti made 20 saves to lead the St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 10-3 win over Cortland, ranked fifth in the Inside Lacrosse/Faceoff Yearbook preseason Division III national poll, at Cornell on Sunday afternoon. The Saints held a slim 4-2 haltime lead before pulling away from the Red Dragons with a 6-1 second half.

Salotti, an Honorable Mention All America the last two seasons, made 12 of his 20 saves in the second half. The Saints put the game away early in the fourth quarter, scoring on their first three shots to increase the lead to seven goals.

Peter Dolan and Tim Loveless scored a goal and assisted on another, and Tim Barnhorst, Alex Moore and Chris Hanbury also scored for the Saints, who start the 2003 season 1-0 despite being outshot 37-27. Derek Elvin led Cortland with a goal and an assist. The Red Dragons advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals last season, but open the 2003 season 0-1 after today's loss. The convincing win is just another step in the recent progression of the Saints towards national prominence. The Saints defended their ECAC Upstate title last season, capping another great season under head coach Mike Mahoney. The Saints finished the 2002 season 12-3 overall and were second in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association with a 5-1 conference record, contending for the league title for the fourth time in the last five years. With the bulk of last year's team returning, the Saints will again set their eye on the UCAA regular season title, but will also be keying on the first UCAA Tournament at the end of the regular season. For the last several years, the winner of the regular season title earned an automatic NCAA Tournament bid, but starting this season, the winner of the conference tournament will earn the league's automatic NCAA berth. Junior attack Feine, the Offensive MVP of the ECAC Tournament, returns as the team's leading goal scorer, and senior attack Russell, who led the team in assists, each scored 58 points to tie for the team lead. The duo is just the tip of the iceberg, however, as the Saints return eight of their top nine scorers from last season's team. Other top offensive players for the Saints include Loveless, Dolan, Moore and John Henry Quackenbush. The Saints allowed less than eight goals per game last season, and the starting defense returns with the exception of 2002 graduate Mike Coker. Mahoney will look to senior defensemen T.J. Landers and Ben Puchalski to lead the defense, while John Loftus and Casey Roach had excellent rookie seasons for the Saints in the 2002 season.

St. Lawrence will play at Cornell again later this week, facing Elmira in another non-league game on Saturday at 4 p.m.
