SAINTS TOP ONEONTA 13-9 FOR SECOND STRAIGHT ECAC UPSTATE LACROSSE TITLE May 12 — Sophomore attackman Josh Feine (left) scored seven goals to lead the Saint men's lacrosse team to a 13-9 win over top-seeded Oneonta in the ECAC Upstate Lacrosse Championship game at Oneonta on Sunday. Feine scored 11 goals and had two assists in the tournament to earn most valuable player honors in a tight race with teammate Steve Salotti who had 43 saves in two games, including 25 in the semifinal win over R.I.T. The Saints, who finish the season 12-3, won their second straight ECAC Upstate title. Tim Loveless gave the Saints an early 1-0 lead at 10:41 of the first quarter and Peter Dolan made it a 2-0 Saint lead less than a minute later. Oneonta came back with two goals, but St. Lawrence tallied one more before the end of the first period to take a 3-2 lead. The Red Dragons took a 4-3 lead in the second, but Feine scored three second peirod goals to go into the half with a 6-4 advantage. The Saints made it 7-4 on Feine's fourth of the day before Oneonta stormed back to tie with three straight goals with 34 seconds to go in the third quarter. The tie was short lived as Dolan won the ensuing faceoff and scampered downfield before ripping a shot low past Oneonta goalie Mike Louer. Feine then ripped a shot from 12 yards out into upper left corner of the cage to give the Saints a two goal lead that they would not relinquish. St. Lawrence controlled the clock and outscored Oneonta 4-2 in the fourth quarter to put away the championship. Steve Salotti made 13 saves as the Saints held Oneonta, the top-scoring team in Division III, seven goals under their season average. Loveless finished with a goal and an assist, Dolan had two goals and two assists, Rob Russell two goals and 2 assists and Alex Moore added a goal to compliment Feine's seven goal afternoon. NINE GOAL FIRST QUARTER KEYS SAINT WIN IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON GAME
Less than a minute after killing off the penalty, Alex Moore scored his second goal of the game on a high shot over Union goalie Patrick Forest’s shoulder. Russell added his fourth of the game less than a minute later, and defenseman Dave Bromall scored his first goal of the season just 24 seconds after that, and the threat of a Union comeback all but disappeared. Russell finished with five goals and an assist, Feine scored two goals and added four assists, and Dolan had two goals and two assists. Twelve St. Lawrence players recorded a point in the game, and ten scored goals. Schiff led Union with four goals and two assists, while Kurt Kimball scored two goals and added an assist for the Dutchmen, who finish the season with a 3-9 overall record, 1-5 UCAA. The Saints finish the regular season 10-3, 5-1 UCAA, and await a possible ECAC Upstate Tournament bid. The Saints were the No. 2 seed and won the championship last season. SAINTS TIP POTSDAM IN 3 OVERTIMES, 10-9 ON QUACKENBUSH GOAL April 27 — John Henry Quackenbush scored the game-winning goal at 2:37 of the third overtime as the Saint men's lacrosse team edged Potsdam State 10-9 in a chilly Saturday night game in Potsdam. The Saints, now 9-3 overall, led 4-2 at the half, but Potsdam, which finished its season 4-8, outscored the Saints 3-1 in the third period to tie it at 5-5. The two teams then traded goals in a back-and-forth start to the final quarter. Josh Feine gave the Saints a 6-5 lead 1:58 into the final quarter, but Potsdam's Erik Lemelbaum tied it again with 9:20 to go. Rob Russell put the Saints back on top with a goal with 8:32 to play, but Potsdam put on a scoring flurry with three goals in under a minute to take a 9-7 lead with 6:53 left in regulation. David DeGroff cut it to 9-8 with an unassisted goal with 4:06 to play and Russell set up Mike Palladino with the game-tying goal with just 14 seconds to go in regulation time. The two teams then battled into the third overtime until Quackenbush scored his second of the night and fifth of the season to give the Saints the victory. Russell led the Saints with a goal and four assists while Alex Moore and Feine joined Quackenbush with two goals each. DeGroff had a goal and two assists, Mike Coker and Palladino scored single goals and Tim Loveless added an assist for the Saints. Lemelbaum and Rob Peters each had three goals and an assist for the Bears. Brendan Dooley had 14 saves in regulation for the Saints and Steve Salotti saved both Potsdam shots on net in the overtimes. Ryan Hanretty made nine saves for Potsdam. The Saints will conclude their regular season with Union on North Country Field in Canton on Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m. CLARKSON DENIES MEN'S LACROSSE AUTOMATIC NCAA BID April 24 — Mike Mahoney had his team on the brink of an automatic NCAA tournament bid for the second year in a row, and for the second consecutive year, the Saints were denied in a tough loss near the end of the season. Last year the team had a chance to claim the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association title and the automatic NCAA Tournament bid that goes with it with a win over Union, but lost to the Dutchmen 12-10 in Schenectady. On Wednesday afternoon, it was Clarkson that sent the Saints home disappointed. The Golden Knights beat St. Lawrence 11-6 on Hantz Field in Potsdam, claiming at least a share of the UCAA title and an automatic NCAA tournament bid with the win. Both teams came into the game with perfect Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association records, and although the Saints can tie Clarkson in the standings with a win in their final conference game against Union and a Clarkson loss to Skidmore, the Golden Knights own the first tiebreaker: head-to-head competition. Clarkson took a 2-0 lead late in the first quarter on Wednesday, but the Saints battled back to tie the game in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Josh Feine put a behind-the-back shot over Clarkson goalie Joe Zebrowski’s shoulder, and Rob Russell scored the equalizer with 10:31 remaining in the first half. Clarkson gained the momentum, however, with three goals in the final six minutes of the half, including two in the last 30 seconds, to take a 5-2 halftime lead. Russell found Feine directly in front of the net 15 seconds into the third quarter, and Feine got just enough on his quick-stick attempt to roll it past Zebrowski to cut Clarkson’s lead to two goals. The Golden Knights responded with the next two goals, and although the Saints cut the lead to three twice they never got any closer, and Clarkson scored two goals in the final two minutes to put the game away. Russell finished with three goals and an assist, while Feine scored three goals for the Saints. Marty Reid scored three goals and added a pair of assists for the Golden Knights, while Jim Lavelle added three goals and an assist. UCAA Goalie of the Week Steve Salotti made 18 saves on 29 shots on goal for St. Lawrence. Clarkson, ranked 16th nationally, improves to 9-1, 5-0 UCAA, while the Saints fall to 8-3, 4-1. St. Lawrence, ranked 20th in the nation, will play Potsdam State in Potsdam on Saturday before closing out the regular season at home against Union on May 4th. SALOTTI NAMED GOALIE OF THE WEEK, SAINTS PLAY CLARKSON FOR NCAA BID April 22 — Junior goalie Steve Salotti was named the Goalie of the Week by the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association on Monday afternoon. Salotti made 11 saves and snagged seven ground balls in a 7-4 win over Rensselaer on Saturday in Troy, NY. He helped the Saints overcome an early 4-2 deficit to score five unanswered goals, holding the Red Hawks scoreless over the last 40:17 of playing time in the game. The Saints are now 8-2 overall, and are undefeated in four conference games with two remaining on the schedule. The team faces Clarkson on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Potsdam. The Golden Knights are 8-1, 4-0, and the two teams has a one and a half game lead on the rest of the league and are up two in the loss column. The winner of Wednesday's game will earn an automatic bid into the 2002 NCAA Tournament. The Saints are ranked 20th nationally by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, while Clarkson is ranked 16th. WIN OVER RENSSELAER SETS UP BIG GAME WITH CLARKSON April 20 — The St. Lawrence University men’s lacrosse team held Rensselaer scoreless over the final 40 minutes of play to come from behind to beat the Red Hawks 7-4 on the ‘86 Field in Troy, NY, on Saturday afternoon. The Saints improve to 8-2 overall and remain tied with Clarkson atop the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association standings with a 4-0 conference record. Clarkson remained undefeated in four league games with a 17-2 win over Vassar on Saturday. The Saints will face Clarkson on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Potsdam. The Saints trailed 4-2 after Tom Haff scored with 10:43 remaining in the second quarter, but the team responded by outscoring Rensselaer 5-0 over the remainder of the game. Rob Russell and Tim Loveless each scored twice during the span, with Russell scoring the game-winner with 6:34 left in the third quater. Russell finished with three goals in the game, while Loveless scored two goals and added an assist. Peter Blake and Dan Usaj each scored a goal and assist for the Saints. Steve Salotti made 11 saves for the Saints. Ryan Frisch led the Red Hawks with a goal and an assist. After facing Clarkson on Wednesday, the Saints will play Potsdam State on Saturday before closing out the regular season against Union on May 4th at 1 p.m. LOFTUS
NAMED UCAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK; SAINTS TO PLAY RENSSELAER April 16 — Freshman defenseman John Loftus was selected as the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Tuesday morning. Loftus, a Loudonville, NY, native, helped the Saints shut down Vassar's defense on Saturday, as the Brewers mustered just ten shots on goal. Loftus has made a major impact for the St. Lawrence defense this spring, starting all nine games so far this year. The Saints, who are ranked 20th in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association national poll, will play last year's UCAA champion Rensselaer in Troy on Saturday. The game will not be played on the turf field, but instead will be contested on the '86 Field. The Saints beat the Red Hawks 15-8 last season. THIRTEEN SCORE IN ROUT OF VASSAR April 13 — Ten days between games apparently leave the men's lacrosse team rusty. Thirteen different players scored goals for the Saints in Saturday afternoon’s Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association game on North Country Field. St. Lawrence’s balanced offense, combined with tough defense and goaltending, led to a 17-2 win over the Brewers. The Saints improve to 7-2 overall, and remain atop the UCAA standings with a 3-0 conference record. The Saints, who last played Hamilton on April 3rd, raced out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, scoring the first 16 goals of the game. Vassar’s first tally of the game came in a man-up situation with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Sophomore attack Josh Feine led the Saints with two goals and four assists. Tim Loveless, John Donovan and Keith Jones each scored twice for St. Lawrence, and Rob Russell scored a goal and added two assists. Christopher Wittelsey and Patrick McAlpine each scored a goal and an assist for Vassar. The Saints outshot the Brewers 54-9, had 21 ground balls to Vassar’s 14, and won 17 of the 23 faceoffs in the game. Steve Salotti, Brendan Dooley and Garrett Cutler combined to make eight saves for the Saints. Michael Hamrah made 21 saves for Vassar, which fell to 3-5, 0-3. The Saints face defending UCAA champion Rensselaer next Saturday in Troy at 2 p.m. FIVE GOAL RUN GIVES SAINTS THIRD STRAIGHT WIN April 3 — The St. Lawrence University men’s lacrosse team used a 5-0 run starting late in the third quarter to beat Hamilton 10-9 in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association game on North Country Field on Wednesday night. The Saints trailed 8-5 after Hamilton’s Matt Silverio scored on an assist from Brad Schwalm with 1:03 remaining in the third quarter. But sophomore attack Tim Loveless trimmed the lead to two, scoring with just 29 seconds left in the third quarter. Sophomore attack Josh Feine gave the Saints the momentum, scoring twice in the first 4:17 of the fourth quarter. Freshman midfielder Alex Moore, the reigning UCAA Co-Rookie of the Week gave the Saints their first lead of the game with 7:01 left in the game. He added an insurance goal to give the Saints a 10-8 lead with 3:11 remaining. Moore’s second goal turned out to be an important one, as Hamilton’s Canute Dalmasse cut the lead to one with 22.9 seconds left, but the Saints were able to run out the clock and preserve their third win in a row. Feine led the Saints with three goals and an assist, and
Dan Usaj scored one goal and added four assists. Moore had two goals,
and Rob Russell and Loveless each scored a goal and an assist. The Saints improve to 6-2 overall, 2-0 UCAA with the win. Hamilton falls to 3-2, 0-1. MOORE EARNS UCAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK RECOGNITION April 1 — Alex Moore was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon. Moore, a freshman from Milford, CT, scored a pair of goals in St. Lawrence's 11-10 overtime win over Skidmore in Saratoga, NY, on Saturday. Moore leads the freshman class with seven goals and three assists. The Saints, tied for first in the UCAA with Clarkson and Rensselaer, face Hamilton in a conference game on Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. on North Country Field. BARNHORST GIVES SAINTS OVERTIME VICTORY OVER SKIDMORE March 30 — Tim Barnhorst scored with just one second remaining in overtime to give the St. Lawrence University men’s lacrosse team an 11-10 win over Skidmore in both teams’ first Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association game of the season in Saratoga, NY. St. Lawrence turned a 7-6 lead through three quarters into a 10-6 cushion with 8:28 to play, but Skidmore came back, scoring the next four goals to force the overtime period. Barnhorst was part of a balanced offense for the Saints, as four players scored two goals apiece. Josh Feine, Pete Dolan, Alex Moore and Barnhorst each scored two goals, while Rob Russell scored a goal and added two assists. John Henry Quackenbush and Dan Usaj each scored single goals for St. Lawrence. Steve Salotti made 14 saves in net for the Saints, who converted on two of their three man-up opportunities. SAINTS TOP ELMIRA IN LAX OPENER March 9 — Goaltender Steve Salotti made 16 saves and attackmen Rob Russell and Tim Loveless scored fourth quarter goals to lift St. Lawrence University's men's lacrosse team to a 7-4 win over Elmira in the Saints' season opener at Cornell on Saturday. Elmira cut the lead to 3-2 with 44 seconds left in the first half and tied the game just 1:09 into the third period, but Dolan scored his second of the game with 4:24 to go in the third quarter and Usaj scored with 56 seconds left to make it 5-3 after three periods. It was the fifth straight win for the Saints, who closed last season on a four-game winning streak. Two Elmira goalies combined for 21 saves in the game. SAINTS SET FOR 2002 SEASON, LOOK TO CONTEND FOR UCAA CROWN AND NCAA BID March 6 — The men’s lacrosse team will look to use last season as a building block towards a conference championship in the very competitive Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association this spring. The Saints finished the 2001 season with five straight wins, including two exciting one-goal victories in the ECAC Upstate Tournament to claim the championship. The team finished the regular season just one game back of UCAA champions Rensselaer, a team the Saints beat 15-8 during the regular season. One of the goals the team has set this season is to claim the league championship and earn the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament that goes with it. “We think the conference will be as competitive as it has ever been,” said head coach Mike Mahoney. “It’s going to be a balanced league. You look at that conference schedule, and there’s not one sure win in any of those games.” The Saints are preparing for tough league play by facing some of the top programs in the country in their non-league schedule, which includes Nazareth, ranked third in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association national poll, and Bowdoin, ranked 13th in the poll. The Saints have plenty of reasons to set lofty goals with a number of top players returning to this year’s team. The offense should be productive, with five of the top seven scorers returning from last year’s squad. Junior Rob Russell and sophomore Josh Feine return as starters at attack. The duo combined for over 42% of the team’s goals last year. Russell led the Saints with 64 points on 32 goals and 32 assists, while Feine led all goal scorers with 46. Sophomore Tim Loveless, a starter at midfield last season, will join Russell and Feine at attack. “Even though our starters at attack are relatively young, they all have a great deal of game experience,” said Mahoney. “Josh was the league’s rookie of the year, and Tim is making a great transition from midfield.” The Saints also return a wealth of experience at midfield. Senior Dan Usaj and sophomore Peter Dolan are both returning contributors from last year’s team, with each player totaling 14 points for the Saints last year. Junior Mike Paladino, who had 14 points his freshman year, will return this year after suffering a shoulder injury last season. Steve Salotti, who earned All-America recognition last year, will return in goal for his junior season. Salotti will be backed up by sophomore Garrett Cutler and freshman Brendan Dooley. “Steve had a tremendous sophomore season, and I don’t think he’s satisfied with that,” said Mahoney. “We expect him to continue to improve and be a leader for us. He’s not going to be able to rest on his laurels, because we have two very capable backups who will vie for playing time.” The one question mark for the Saints this season will be their defense. Andrew DeHaas joined Salotti on the All-America list, but graduated in May. Mahoney will look to senior captian Mike Coker to lead the defense this spring. The Saints will start the regular season on Saturday with a non-league game against Elmira at Cornell at 5 p.m. Mahoney has built a strong tradition of men’s lacrosse at St. Lawrence compiling a 36-23 career record in his first four years as head coach. The Saints claimed the UCAA title in 1999 and have earned invitations to the ECAC Upstate Tournament twice during his four year tenure.
