SAINTS-CORTLAND POSTPONED Mar. 7 : The No. 13 St. Lawrence University men’s lacrosse team's game against No. 3 Cortland has been postponed due to a winter storm. No make up date has been established.
2008 SEASON OPENER POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER Feb. 29: The season opener for the Siant men's lacrosse team against Elmira at Cornell has been postponed due to expected severe weather conditions.
A makeup date for the game will be determined at a later time. The Saints are now scheduled to open the season on March 8th against 2007 National Finalist Cortland in Cortland, NY at 1:00pm.
NO. 11 SAINTS BEGIN QUEST FOR THIRD STRAIGHT NCAA BERTH ON SATURDAY Feb. 28: The No. 11 St. Lawrence University men’s lacrosse team, coming off of their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance, will look to continue its dominance of the Liberty League and remain one of the elite programs in the nation heading into the 2008 campaign.
The Saints enter the upcoming season having won 16 consecutive conference games, including victories in both the 2006 and 2007 Liberty League Tournaments. Though the squad will be without two-time All American Defenseman J.J. Hearty and the 2007 Liberty League “Player of the Year” Justin Demuth this spring, the Saints return a wealth of talent and experience that could prove vital come tournament time.
“While we will certainly miss some key contributors to our recent success, I am confident that our current players will step up to the challenges ahead of them throughout the ’08 season. We continue to receive a great deal of leadership from our upperclassmen who have had a taste of success, and have been willing to make the necessary commitment to achieve their goals.”
Offensively, the Saints have a variety of weapons to attack opposing goalkeepers, including senior attackman Kevin Russell, junior midfielder Alex Slauson and sophomore attackman Will McKee. Russell led the Saints in 2007 with 54 points (19g,35a), while Slauson and McKee combined for 46 goals. The trio will be joined by veterans Ben Prime, Peter Carroll, and Derek Hansen creating a formidable group of scorers.
In the midfield, junior P.J. Santora returns as the team’s face-off specialist, giving the Scarlet and Brown a reliable possession man in the middle. The experienced senior trio of Mike Long, Cory Yawger and Rob Kopp as well as juniors Kyle Benton and Colin Moon and sophomore Scott Smith will also add skill and depth to the transition game for St. Lawrence in 2008.
Though St. Lawrence lost some key players on the defensive end of the field, the Saints return long stick middie Ben Buskey, and the 2006 All-American will anchor the squad once again in his senior season. Buskey will join juniors Carl Festa and Chris Farr along with sophomores Trevor Scoon, Teddy Barber and Greg Sperrazza in protecting the team’s cage in 2008. The goaltending duties will be left to senior Frank Maguire and junior Thomas Hollingsworth.
“After some competitive scrimmages, our guys are anxious to kickoff the regular season. We have put together as tough a non-conference schedule as we have ever faced, beginning with an experienced Elmira squad, who already have two games under their belt,” added Coach Mahoney, who comes into the season with a 108-45 mark in ten seasons. “Beyond that, we’ll square off with last year's national champion (Salisbury), national runner-up (Cortland) as well as Bowdoin College. We hope that we will be battle tested and prepared for our all-important Liberty League games, which will be as competitive as ever.”
St. Lawrence, which finished the 2007 season ranked No. 5 in the USILA National Rankings, will kick-off the 2008 season this Saturday, March 1 in a non-conference showdown with Elmira at Cornell University at 1:00pm.
THREE SAINTS EARN PRE-SEASON ALL-AMERICAN HONORS Dec. 20: St. Lawrence University seniors Ben Buskey and Kevin Russell along with junior PJ Santora have been named Division III Pre-season All-Americans in Inside Lacrosse’s annual Face-Off Yearbook. Meanwhile, the Saints will enter the 2008 season ranked No. 10 in the nation according to Inside Lacrosse.
Fresh off a fantastic season at linebacker for the St. Lawrence University football team, Buskey is preparing to once again be a force along the Saints’ defensive line on the lacrosse field. The Hanover, NH native received All-American Honorable Mention status in 2006, and was named to Inside Lacrosse’s Pre-Season All-American Third Team.
Russell, who led the Saints in 2007 with 54 points on 19 goals and 35 assists, will look to again be one of the countries most productive offensive weapons. He and Santora, the Saints’ primary face-off specialist who won 65% of the draws last season, received Honorable Mention status by Inside Lacrosse.
“While the pre-season individual awards are nice, I think those selected are more concerned about the team's success and fulfilling their role to achieve the team goals,” said Saints’ head coach Mike Mahoney who enters his 11th season at the helm. “Having said that, the recognition does highlight three young men who have had a considerable impact in a particular area on the field. Kevin has been one of our top offensive performers over the past three years, PJ has been a force in the middle of the field with his face-off success, and we hope that Ben’s physical presence and skills continue lead our defensive efforts.”
St. Lawrence has advance to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments after winning the Liberty League Tournament in both 2006 and 2007. The Saints are once again predicted to be the team to beat according to the Coach’s Poll conducted by Inside Lacrosse. Having finished the 2007 season ranked No. 5 in the country, the program continues to be one of the best in the nation, opening the 2008 campaign ranked No. 10 by Inside Lacrosse and No. 12 by Laxnews.com.
“I think the more experienced a team is, they’re less likely to put emphasis on any pre-season prognostications. I think the leadership of this group understands that looking back at 2007 or looking too far ahead to the 2008 season would be problematic,” added Coach Mahoney. “We are excited about the challenges and opportunities that a new season brings.”
“Anytime you play the defending national champion and the team that they beat in the championship game, you have a very rigorous schedule in place,” said Mahoney. “At the same time, our focus will be on a very challenging Liberty League schedule, which will ultimately decide who represents our conference in the post-season. We look forward to a productive pre-season in preparation for Elmira on March 1st and then we will take it one step at a time.”
GLENNON JOINS SAINTS STAFF FOR 2008 SEASON Sept. 4: The St. Lawrence University men’s lacrosse team, coming off of their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, has added former Colby College standout Ryan Glennon as an assistant coach for the 2008 season.
Glennon studied English at Colby, where he was also a four year starter as a Face-Off Middie and Attackman. He was named to the NESCAC’s All-Conference Team at both positions in 2004 when he was his squad’s third-leading scorer.
After graduating in 2004, Glennon worked at the Kents Hill School as the Associate Director of Admissions. He returned to his alma mater the following year to begin his collegiate coaching experience, joining the Colby staff as an assistant coach.
However, that was merely the start of Glennon’s coaching path, as the Exeter, NH native also coached both the Maine Select Lacrosse team and the New England Premier Lacrosse team in the summer of 2006. That fall, Glennon joined Bowdoin College as an assistant coach and Game Management Coordinator.
“Ryan offers our program some valuable experience both on and off the lacrosse field that we think can make a difference for our team,” said Saints head coach Mike Mahoney. “He’s coached on several impressive levels and was obviously a standout player at Colby. I think his leadership and ideas can help our program immediately.”
The men’s lacrosse program has won the Liberty League Tournament and the conference’s automatic bid to the National Tournament each of the past two seasons. The Saints hosted an NCAA Tournament game at North Country Field for the first time last season after posting a 14-1 through the conference tourney.
