Emmett Davis

Former St. Lawrence University basketball player Emmett Davis moves into his tenth season with the Colgate Raiders this winter. Davis, who inherited the program in April 1998 after the tragic death of beloved Coach Jack Bruen, has led the Raiders to their second best record for a fifth year coach in almost eighty years, with 71 wins. Last season marked the first time in 10 years that the program has earned consecutive regular season winning records.

Davis' 2002-2003 team posted five consecutive wins in the final two weeks of the season, finishing in a tie for second place in the Patriot League with a 9-5 conference record. He has worked to turn Colgate basketball into a winning program, posting 17 wins in the 2001-2002 season, just the sixth Raider team to achieve that number in the 102 year history of the program.

Prior to his current position at Colgate, Davis served as an assistant coach at the Naval Academy for 12 years, gaining the opportunity to coach consensus Player of the Year David Robinson, an NBA great who has earned Rookie of the Year and MVP honors, and 2 NBA championships as a member of the San Antonio Spurs.

Davis hails originally from Gloversville, NY, and played under former Navy and Pittsburgh Head Coach Paul Evans while a member of the St. Lawrence team. He is married to former collegiate assistant basketball coach Gail Beatty, and they have three children, Emmett (5), Shane (3), and Brendan (1).


Morgan "Mo" Cassara

Mo Cassara enters the 2006-07 basketball season in his first season as an assistant basketball coach at Boston College. Cassara joins the Eagles after serving the last two years as head coach at Clark (Mass.) University.

 

Cassara comes to Boston College with a resume that includes head coaching experience at both the prep school and collegiate levels, serving most recently as the men's basketball coach at Clark University. Cassara, worked at The University of Dayton for the 2003-04 season, was the head coach at Worcester Academy in Worcester, MA for four seasons. At Dayton, Cassara helped lead the Flyers to a 24-9 record and first round berth in the NCAA Tournament. During his time at Dayton, the Flyers landed a national top 20 recruiting class and won the prestigious Maui Invitational.

His four-year record of 89-20 at the Worcester Academy concluded with a 25-4 season that climaxed with Worcester 's first New England Prep School championship in 16 years. Eight players from his championship team headed to Division I the next year. Cassara has also coached Boston College 's Craig Smith and Steve Hailey, Georgia Tech's Jarrett Jack, Providence ’s Dwight Brewington and Clark ’s Dave McNamara ‘04. Before taking over at Worcester Academy, Cassara spent two seasons as a college assistant coach, one each at The Citadel (1998-99) and Washington & Lee (1997-98).

A native of Canton, NY, Cassara played at St. Lawrence University, where his father Rick was the former head coach. He was the captain of SLU’s 1997 NCAA-qualifying team and graduated with a BS in physical education. He also played at Worcester Academy in 1992-93 and was team captain of the Hilltopper team that advanced to the semifinals of the New England Prep School Championship Cassara has a master's degree from Boston College in higher education and administration.

 

Bob Sheldon


A 1977 graduate of St. Lawrence, Bob Sheldon now finds himself in the midst of a 16-year stint as head coach of the Men's basketball program at Tufts University, a college in the competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference. In 2006, Sheldon was named NESCAC Coach of the Year for the Northeast Region after leading the Jumbos to a 23-7 overall record. Sheldon is the all-time leader in wins at Tufts with a 296-187 record, including a 2000 ECAC championship and two NCAA Tournament berths in 1997 and 1995. Last season's team lost to eventual NCAA National Champion Williams College in the semi-finals of the NESCAC tournament.

Sheldon has coached some of the nation's top student-athletes at Tufts, including Chris McMahon, a First Team All-American and Third Team Academic All-American in 1995, Chad Onofrio, who is among the top 15 in career free throw percentage in Division III (86.8%), and Mike McGlynn, who scored his 1,500th career point and 300th three- pointer last season.

Sheldon returned to Tufts in 1988, accepting the head coach position after he served as an assistant coach for Tufts from 1983-1985, and an assistant coach and director of physical education and intramurals for Clark University from 1985-1988. He has participated in eight NCAA Tournaments as a player and coach.

 

Aaron Marshall

 

Marshall comes to Colgate from SUNY Potsdam where he had served as an assistant coach for one season after graduating from St. Lawrence University in 2005. During his undergraduate career, Marshall was a four-year letterwinner for the Saints and served as captain his final two seasons.  In his senior season, he was first team all-Liberty League for the second time, and was a first team NABC Division III East all-District selection.  In addition, he received St. Lawrence’s Senior Male Athlete Award in 2005.  During his collegiate career, he scored 1,442 points and grabbed 611 rebounds and in 2003 was the NCAA field goal percentage leader making 67.9 percent of his shots.


A native of Buffalo, Marshall attended Buffalo Traditional High School where he was all-Western in both basketball and football.

"Aaron has distinguished himself as a leader throughout his career,” said Davis. “As a player at St. Lawrence he was a two-time captain and an outstanding scorer and rebounder and as a young coach he has impressed the people closest to him as an outstanding teacher, communicator and recruiter. Aaron will work closely with our inside players to help develop their skills on the court and using his familiarity with the liberal arts curriculum at St. Lawrence he will provide strong academic guidance off the court for our student athletes. I am thrilled that Aaron has decided to join our Colgate family."

 

Nick Burkhard

 

Nick Burkhard enters his first season as an assistant coach at Salisbury State University under head coach Steve Holmes

 

A 2002 graduate of St. Lawrence University Burkhard help lead the Saints to a phenomenal year his senior season. The Saints finished 21-9 overall and won the ECAC Upstate Championship. They were the UCAA Tournament Runner-Up and the UCAA Regular Season Runner-up.

 

Mark Coleman

Coleman came to the Western New Mexico University after being at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, where he had been the head coach for the past eight seasons. In 1996-97 he earned Coach of the Year honors for leading the Rangers to a 19-9 record and their first ever ECAC Championship.

A 1983 graduate of St. Lawrence University, Coleman was a team captain and MVP as a senior. He was also a three-year all-conference selections and led the Saints to two NCAA Division III tournament appearances.

 

Coleman spent eight years as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh, where he handled much of the recruiting and scouting for the Panthers. While at Pittsburgh he helped guide the team to five NCAA and two NIC appearances as well as two Big East titles. Prior to his tenure at Pittsburgh, Coleman served as an assistant coach at Canisius College, the University of Vermont, and George Mason University, where he coached the team to its first NIT appearance in school history. Through his 17 years of coaching, Coleman has coached seven NBA players, including former New York Knicks Charles Smith and the Vancouver Grizzlies' Eric Mobley.
