EMBRY-RIDDLE TOPS SAINTS 77-74

Dec. 29: The Saint basketball team gave unbeaten Embry-Riddle a scare, but dropped its sixth of the season Saturday night as the Eagles came from five points down in the second half to win.

 

Tyler DeBord scored 24 points on 11 of 15 shooting and had seven rebounds and Eric Lorenzo added 15 points and 12 rebounds for 12-0 Embery-Riddle, which is ranked fourth nationally.

 

Tom Wopperer led the Saints with 16 points and seven rebounds while Andy Hoercher and Tyler Shaver added 11 points each and Bela Vonnak had ten points and nine rebounds.

 

The Saints opened as much as a ten point first half lead at 21-11 at the midpoint of the first half, but the Eagles battled back to tie it at 33-33 at the half. The two teams traded leads early in the second half with a three point play by Wopperer putting the Saints up 51-44 six minutes into the half. Hoercher’s three pointer gave the Saints a seven point lead with 8:44 to play, but Embry-Riddle tied the game at 70-70 with 5:01 to play and never trailed after that.

 

St. Lawrence, now 2-6, returns to action at home on Jan. 5 vs. Brockport.

 

SAINTS FALL TO RIPON IN LAND OF MAGIC CLASSIC

Dec. 28: Scott Gillespie scored 42 points, hitting 21 of 25 from the foul line to lead Ripon College to a 94-79 win over St. Lawrence in the first game of the Land of Magic Classic, hosted by Embery Riddle in Orlando, FL on Friday.

 

The Saints matched Ripon in field goals made and had one more three pointer, but Ripon made 33 of 46 free throws and the Saints 17 of 27 to make the difference in the game.

 

Tom Wopperer led the Saints with 19 points, and eight rebounds, hitting seven of 18 from the floor. Rich Williams hit six of eight from the floor and five of six from the line for 17 points and had seven rebounds in 19 minutes of play while Josh Sharlow had 11 points and five assists and Bela Vonnak chipped in ten points and seven rebounds.

Gillespie had seven assists and seven rebounds to go with his 41 points while three other Ripon players were in double figures in the game.

 

SLU trailed 46-33 at the half and while they got close in the second half, could not overcome the 13 point lead.

The Saints will play Embery Riddle at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in their second game of the weekend.
