PANTHERS DEFEAT SAINTS, 86-67 Nov. 20: The St. Lawrence University men’s basketball team fell Tuesday night to Middlebury College in the Panthers’ home opener this season. The Saints lost 86-67.
Middlebury led by as many as eight in the first half before St. Lawrence closed that gap after a three-pointer by junior captain Tom Wopperer, followed by another three from sophomore Scott Robator and a layup by junior Bela Vonnak, who ended an 8-0 run for the Saints and tied the game for the Scarlet and Brown at 22 a piece with 10:03 left to play in the first half.
The Panthers were relentless and were not about to let the game get away from them in their home opener and took a ten-point lead at one point in the remaining minutes before closing out the half with a 40-33 advantage.
Middlebury opened the second half on a 9-0 run, sparked by five points from Andrew Harris and four from Albert Handy, to take a 51-33 lead with 16:06 left. The Saints chipped away and cut the lead to nine on a lay-up from Josh Sharlow at the 9:10 mark, but that was the closest they would get to the lead as the Panthers led by as many as 21 from that point, ending the game with the 86-67 win.
St. Lawrence shot 25 out of 59 from the field and 4-for-15 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Josh Sharlow led the way for the Saints with 13 total points, three assists and four rebounds. Juniors Tom Wopperer and Bela Vonnak each had 12 points a piece, with Wopperer tallying six rebounds and Vonnak having four and assisting two shots.
The Saints, now 1-2 this season, will travel to Plattsburgh on Tuesday, November 27 th to battle the Cardinals on the court. Tip-off is set for 8:00pm.
