ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY Results SAINTS FINISH SEASON ON UCAA QUARTERFINAL LOSS Second-ranked Rensselaer defeated the eighth-ranked Saints by a final score of 78-65 on Tuesday night. Rensselaer led the Saints by 18 points at halftime, and held on to that lead to advance to the UCAA semifinals. Adam Laware led Rensselaer with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Teammate Bobby Hurley also scored 14 points, including four three-point field goals. Andy Marcus added 12 points and four rebounds, while Nick Burkhard chipped in 10 points and four assists. Dave Hannah pulled down a team high eight rebounds. SAINTS END REGULAR SEASON ON WINNING NOTE Coming off of a buzzer-beater victory over Cazenovia last night, the Saints rallied for a 65-43 win over visiting Keuka College in their final game of the regular season on Saturday evening. The Saints end the regular season at 3-9 in UCAA conference play and 7-17 overall. The Saints, who out-rebounded Keuka 38-29, led by a score of 34-19 going into halftime. They shot 45% from the field, to Keuka's 33%. Ryan Harpster hit four three-point field goals and finished the game with 20 points to lead the Saints. Andy Marcus added 12 points, while both J.D. Delmonico and J.J. DeMarco went three for five from the field to chip in 10 points each. Delmonico pulled down a team high 11 rebounds, while DeMarco grabbed nine boards. Kevin Eberz dished out four assists. Judd Leonhardt led Keuka with 15 points and nine rebounds. Bob Duvall added 13 points and six rebounds, while Brian Gehm led all players in the assist category with eight. DELMONICO, SAINTS DEFEAT CAZENOVIA AT THE BUZZER The Saints shot just 27% from the field in the first half of Friday night's game against visiting Cazenovia, but managed to hold a two point lead at halftime on Andy Marcus' jumper just before time expired. The 25-23 lead gave the Saints momentum for the second half of play, but Cazenovia also came out fighting. It was an exchange of field goals for the majority of the second half, until the Saints took a seven point lead on two for two performances from the free throw line by both J.J. DeMarco and J.D. Delmonico in a twenty second time span. Cazenovia then went on a seven point run of their own, with a three-point field goal by Chuck Cassidy, two free throws by Michael Brooks and another field goal by Cassidy. Nick Volchok gave Cazenovia a 52-50 advantage with 2:20 left to play in regulation. Both teams went scoreless until the 1:16 mark, when Delmonico grabbed an offensive rebound and tied the game once again. Cazenovia missed three field goal attempts to give the Saints the ball with three seconds remaining. The Saints made a quick in-bounds pass and called another time out that would allow them to set up a play in their half of the floor. With two seconds to go, Delmonico cut off of a screen and received a pass from teammate Nick Burkhard. Delmonico's turn around jumper was good at the buzzer, as the Saints won by a final score of 54-52. DeMarco led the Saints with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Marcus added 12 points and six rebounds, while Dustin Crooker chipped in seven points. Kevin Eberz dished out a team high four assists. Cassidy finished the game with 23 points for Cazenovia, including five three-point field goals. He also grabbed a team high 10 rebounds. Michael Brooks added 16 points and six rebounds. The Saints are now 6-17 overall. SAINTS FALL TO ARCH-RIVAL CLARKSON The men's basketball team suffered a 87-62 loss to arch-rival Clarkson University on Tuesday evening. The Saints, who defeated Clarkson earlier in the season, trailed by just five points at halftime. The Golden Knights outscored St. Lawrence by twenty points in the second half of play however, to hang on for the UCAA conference victory. The Golden Knights, who shot 53% from the field, were led by Josh Ordway's 25 points and six rebounds. Teammate Ashton Fritz added 23 points, four assists and four steals. The Saints were led by Nick Burkhard and J.D. Delmonico, who each scored 14 points. Burkhard added three assists and five rebounds, while Delmonico pulled down seven rebounds. Andy Marcus led all rebounders with nine. He also chipped in nine points. The loss drops the Saint conference record to 3-9 and their overall record to 5-17. They will host Cazenovia and Keuka on Friday and Saturday for their final games of the regular season. SAINTS LOSE ON ROAD Host Rensselaer led the Saints 28-14 at halftime and hung on throughout regulation to post a 64-51 UCAA victory on Saturday evening. The loss drops the Saint conference record to 3-8 and their overall record to 5-16. The Saints shot just 23% from the field and 50% from the free throw line in the first half of play. They were out-rebounded 47-34 by the Red Hawks. Rensselaer's Alex Dowlin led all scorers with 20 points. Dowlin also grabbed a team high six rebounds. Teammate Bobby Hurley added eight points and six assists, while Adam Laware led all rebounders with 14. Nick Burkhard led the Saints with 15 points. Burkhard hit two three-point field goals and went seven for eight from the free throw line. He also grabbed a team high seven rebounds and dished out four assists. Andy Marcus was the only other Saint player to reach double digits in scoring. Marcus chipped in 14 points and six rebounds. J.D. Delmonico, who went a perfect three for three from the field, added nine points. SAINTS FALL TO SAVANNAH The Saints lost a non-conference makeup game to the Savannah College of Arts and Design on Wednesday night. The Saints shot 60% from the field, 75% from three-point range, and 64% from the foul line in the first half of play. They led the Scads 30-25 at halftime. The Scads went on an 11-2 run midway through the second half and tied the game at 38 a piece. Savannah held on to that lead throughout the remainder of regulation. The Saints cut the lead to four on a few different occasions, but could not come back for their fourth consecutive win. Saint guard Nick Burkhard led all scorers with 23 points. Burkhard went seven for 12 from the field and five for six from the free throw line. He hit four three-point field goals, dished out four assists, made two steals and grabbed four rebounds. Teammate Andy Marcus added 10 points and six rebounds. Dustin Crooker and J.D. Delmonico each scored eight points. Eric Smith had 20 points, three assists and two steals. Marcus Ross pulled down 10 rebounds, while Carroll Boomer III dished out four assists. The Saints are now 5-15 overall. HARPSTER NAMED UCAA GUARD OF THE WEEK Junior captain Ryan Harpster was named the Guard of the Week by the UCAA conference for the week of February 1st through February 5th. In three games, Harpster amassed 59 points, including 13 three-point field goals. He also totaled 12 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Harpster led the Saints in scoring in three consecutive wins over Clarkson University on Tuesday, Skidmore College on Friday and Union College on Saturday. Among his 18 points against Clarkson, Harpster hit five of eight three-point field goals. Against Skidmore, he hit four of six three-point field goals and went six for seven from the free throw line to finish the game with 20 points. He also grabbed four rebounds and collected two steals. Harpster's best performance came against Union, when he again hit four three-point field goals and went a perfect three for three from the foul line. He totaled 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 69-63 victory. SAINT MEN WIN THREE IN A ROW Led by captain Ryan Harpster, the men's basketball has now won three consecutive games, all of which were UCAA conference victories. Harpster scored 21 points in a 69-63 victory over Union College on Saturday. The win improves the Saint conference record to 3-7 and their overall record to 5-14. The Saints, who trailed 25-24 at halftime, shot 70% from the field in the second half of regulation. The finished the game shooting 48% as a team to Union's 36%. Harpster hit four three-point shots for the Saints and dished out three assists. J.D. Delmonico and Andy Marcus each chipped in 10 points, while Marcus grabbed a team high 11 rebounds. Kevin Eberz and J.J. DeMarco ended up with nine points a piece. Union's Aaron Galletta led all scorers with 25 points. Galletta went a perfect six for six from the free throw line in addition to grabbing five rebounds. He was the only Union player to reach double-digits in scoring. SAINT MEN CAPTURE ANOTHER CONFERENCE WIN The men's basketball team captured their second UCAA win over visiting Skidmore on Friday night. Skidmore entered the game with only two conference losses. The victory improves the Saint conference record to 2-7 and their overall record to 4-14. The Saints led Skidmore 29-20 at halftime. The Thoroughbreds slowly chipped away at that lead in the second half of regulation and a Saint foul that would send Justin Vargas to the free throw line for three shots tied the game with nine minutes left to play. The Saints regained the lead however, and extended it to nine points on consecutive three-point baskets by Ryan Harpster, Dustin Crooker and Nick Burkhard. The Saints held on to the lead throughout the remainder of the second half, due in part to another solid performance at the free throw line. Harpster finished the game with a team high 20 points. He hit four three-point baskets and went six for seven from the free throw line. Burkhard added 11 points and three assists. Kevin Eberz, who chipped in 10 points, shot two for two from the three-point line and four for four from the free throw line. Andy Marcus grabbed 11 rebounds and made three steals. J.J. DeMarco pulled down nine rebounds. Brian Culkin led Skidmore with 22 points. Culkin also collected three steals. SAVANNAH COLLEGE GAME RE-SCHEDULED The game against Savannah College of Arts and Design, originally scheduled for January 29th, has been re-sheculed for Wednesday, February 9th at 7:30 p.m. SAINTS DOWN CLARKSON IN UCAA CONFERENCE GAME Led by Ryan Harpster's 18 points, the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team pulled off a miraculous 66-52 UCAA conference victory over arch-rival Clarkson University on Tuesday night. Harpster knocked down five of eight three point field goals on another impressive shooting performance. The win marks the first conference victory this season for the Saints, who are now 3-14 overall. A jumper by Saint sophomore Nick Burkhard sparked a 14-0 run for St. Lawrence early in the first half of play, as the Golden Knights went scoreless for nearly a seven minute stretch. The Saints kept a fourteen point lead for much of the remainder of the first half, but a three point field goal by Ashton Fritz and two more points by teammate Lee Roes would cut the Saint lead to nine going into halftime. The second half was an exchange of field goals until Saint forwards Andy Marcus and Dustin Crooker converted on consecutive three point plays. Marcus grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on the putback to give the Saints a 50-39 advantage. Crooker than took a pass from Burkhard and was fouled on his layup to make the lead The Golden Knights could not cut the lead to under ten from that point on, as St. Lawrence went 12 for 17 from the free throw line and out-rebounded Clarkson 27-16 in the second half of regulation. Crooker finished the game with 13 points, while Burkhard contributed 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds. J.D. Delmonico added eight points and eight rebounds, while Marcus pulled down a team high nine rebounds. Josh Ordway led Clarkson with 13 points. Matt Elder was the only other Golden Knight to reach double digits with 10 points. Roes finished the game with nine points, including a perfect five for five performance from the free throw line. SAINTS LOSE UCAA GAME TO RENSSELAER The Saint men made a run midway through the second half of regulation, but could not cut Rensselaer's lead to any less than eleven in a UCAA contest at St. Lawrence on Friday night. Rensselaer won the game by a final score of 77-65. Alex Dowlin led all scorers with 19 points for Rensselaer. Dowlin also pulled down a team high 11 rebounds. Teammates Adam Laware and Bobby Hurley added 18 and 14 points respectively. Laware went a perfect seven for seven from the field. Hurley also collected five assists. Nick Burkhard contributed 16 points and four assists for St. Lawrence. Andy Marcus added 15 points, shooting 7 for 10 from the field. Marcus also pulled down five rebounds. Ryan Harpster added 10 points for the Saints, who are now 0-7 in UCAA play and 2-14 overall. Rensselaer, who led 40-27 at halftime, shot 53% from the field and 80% from the free throw line. SATURDAY'S GAME CANCELLED The Saints were originally scheduled to host Savannah College of Arts and Design this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. That game has been cancelled. SAINTS LOSE TO HOBART ON THE ROAD The men's basketball team suffered their sixth conference loss of the season on Saturday evening. Host Hobart College defeated the Saints 96-71 in a UCAA match-up. The loss drops the St. Lawrence overall record to 2-13. Hobart jumped out to a 13-0 lead to start the game and went into halftime with a 52-30 advantage. It was more of the same in the second half of regulation, as Hobart never led by less than twenty points. Rob Pisanelli netted 27 points for the Statesmen. Joe Corbett added 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Michael Gambino also chipped in 19 points. The Saints were led by J.D. Delmonico, who scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Teammate J.J. DeMarco added 11 points and a team high eight rebounds. The two freshmen were the only Saint players to reach double-digits. HAMILTON HANDS SAINTS UCAA LOSS The Saints lost another conference game to host Hamilton College, who remains unbeaten in the UCAA, on Friday night. Hamilton led 39-33 at halftime and hung on for a 78-68 victory to improve their conference record to 7-0. With the loss, the Saints fall to Four Hamilton players tallied double digits. Kris Fudge led all scorers with 20 points. Fudge also pulled down eight rebounds. Noah Hammond added 12 points, while Brendan Ferretti and Jimmy Driggs each provided 11 points. Nick Burkhard led St. Lawrence with 14 points, four steals and three assists. Andy Marcus chipped in 12 points and a team high seven rebounds, while Dustin Crooker scored 10 points for the Saints. SAINTS FALL IN SECOND HALF St. Lawrence and Plattsburgh went into halftime tied at 38 points apiece, but the host Cardinals would prevail by outscoring the Saints 41-34 in the second half of regulation. The final score was 79-72, as the Saints fall to 2-11 overall on the season. Although the Saints had a 12-rebound advantage over Plattsburgh, second half shooting may have been the key to the game. While Plattsburgh shot 80% from the free throw line in the second half, the Saints shot just 56%. Plattsburgh also outshot the Saints from the field, shooting 61% in the second half to St. Lawrence's 38%. Plattsburgh's Corey Tannis led all scorers with 22 points. Tannis also tied a team high four rebounds. Ryan Harpster put forth a solid performance for the Saints, with 34 points, six rebounds and three steals. Harpster sank a very impressive eight of 10 three point baskets and went 12 for 16 from the field. He also dished out two assists. Dustin Crooker added 12 points and three assists, while Andy Marcus scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. J.J. DeMarco also pulled down eight rebounds for the Saints. SAINTS LOSE CONFERENCE GAME TO SKIDMORE The men's basketball team had their hands full on Saturday evening, as host Skidmore College has not suffered a loss in five straight games. The Thoroughbreds went on to defeat the Saints 84-59. Skidmore's Brian Culkin led all scorers with 23 points. Teammates Mark Mortenson and Keith Ganzenmuller each added 12 points. Skidmore led the Saints 40-23 at halftime and St. Lawrence could not seem to cut the lead. Ryan Harpster was the high scorer for St. Lawrence with 12 points. Dustin Crooker was the only other Saint scorer in double digits with 10 points, while Andy Marcus pulled down a team high eight rebounds. The Saints fall to 0-4 in the conference and 2-10 overall with the loss. UNION HOLDS ON FOR ONE POINT VICTORY The men's basketball team suffered a one-point loss to host Union College on Friday night. Union defeated the Saints 68-67 in a UCAA conference game. C.J. Rodgers led all scorers with 22 points for Union, who trailed St. Lawrence 31-30 at the half. Both teams shot an impressive 64% from the field in the second half of regulation, but Union would come out on top. Ryan Harpster led the Saints with 20 points, including a six-for-six performance from the free throw line. J.J. DeMarco added 16 points and a team high seven rebounds. The Saints are now 0-3 in the conference and 2-9 overall. CROOKER NAMED UCAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK St. Lawrence freshman guard Dustin Crooker was named this week's UCAA Rookie of the Week for his performance in the Williams Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Crooker provided 16 points and four rebounds in a 90-78 loss to Nyack College in the opening round of the tournament. In the consolation game against Southern Vermont, Crooker scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. The Saints won the game 90-72. SAINTS CLAIM CONSOLATION GAME Led by Saint guard Nick Burkhard, the men's basketball team pulled off a 90-72 win over Southern Vermont in the consolation game of the Williams Tournament at Williams College on Saturday. Burkhard finished the game with 21 points, including four three-point baskets. Dustin Crooker added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Saints, while All-Tournament selection Ryan Harpster followed up his 31-point performance (from Friday) with 12 points. J.J. DeMarco also contributed 12 points and pulled down a team high nine rebounds. St. Lawrence went into halftime with a 52-36 advantage and led Southern Vermont comfortably throughout regulation. The Saints out-rebounded Southern Vermont 51-33. Now 2-8, the Saints will play at Union and Skidmore on Friday and Saturday. NYACK DEFEATS SAINTS IN TOURNEY OPENER Despite Ryan Harpster's 31 point effort, the Saints fell to Nyack College in the opening round of the Williams Tournament by a final score of 90-78 on Friday night. Harpster led all scorers, knocking down five three point baskets and shooting two for two from the free throw line. Nyack led just 38-33 at the half, but shot 60% from the field in the second half of play and took advantage of 21 St. Lawrence turnovers to pull away with the win. Dustin Crooker added 16 points for the Saints, while Andy Marcus chipped in 12 points and a team high eight rebounds. The Saints, now 1-8, will play in the consolation game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. SAINTS FALL TO ALFRED The St. Lawrence men's basketball team led Alfred 36-32 at halftime, but scored just 24 second half points as Alfred came from behind for a 73-60 win over the Saints. Robbie Stedman led all players with 17 points for Alfred, who improves to 6-2 with the win. Ryan Harpster led the Saints with 16 points and four steals. Nick Burkhard contributed 14 points, while Mike Chick added nine points and a team high 10 rebounds. Dustin Crooker also scored nine points and chipped in five rebounds. Andy Marcus pulled down eight rebounds and dished out three assists. The Saints ran into a bit of foul trouble in the second half of play, as J.J. DeMarco fouled out of the game and both Crooker and Chick spent time on the bench late in the game with four fouls each. The Saints fall to 1-7 overall with the loss and will not play again until January 7th and 8th at the Williams Tournament. ITHACA TOPS SAINTS Ryan Bamford scored a career high 27 points as Ithaca College defeated the Saints 81-66 on Friday night. The Saints fall to 1-6 overall with the loss. Ryan Harpster scored 19 points for St. Lawrence, while Andy Marcus contributed 17 points and a team high nine rebounds. Nick Burkhard added 10 points for the Saints, including three for five from the three point line. Ithaca, who improves to 4-2 with the win, led just 37-31 at halftime. Pat Britton added 21 points and seven rebounds for the Bombers. The Saints will play at Alfred University tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. SAINT MEN FALL TO HAMILTON The St. Lawrence men's basketball team lost to Hamilton College by a final score of 89-80 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Hamilton remains unbeaten with a now 3-0 overall record. GAMBINO, HOBART OUTSHOOT SAINTS Hobart guard Michael Gambino hit four three point shots in the first four minutes of play and finished the game with 33 points to lead his team to a 95-83 victory over host St. Lawrence on Friday night. Gambino went 10 for 15 from the field, hitting a total of eight three point shots, and made five of six free throw attempts. With the win, Hobart improves to 1-2. SAINTS HANG ON FOR FIRST WIN The Saint men earned their first victory of the season despite a 28 point effort from St. Joseph's guard Tory Burke. Burke went 9 for 17 from the field, including one three pointer and 9 for 12 from the free throw line.
NAZARETH EDGES SAINTS Nazareth fought off a second half come back by host St. Lawrence in the Saints home opener and came out on top 58-53 in the final minutes of regulation. The Saints, now 0-3, will host St. Joseph's College at 8:00 p.m. next Tuesday. SAINTS DROP TWO IN INVITATIONAL St. Lawrence University's men's basketball team went through opening weekend growing pains Friday and Saturday as it lost to Oswego and Potsdam in the North Country Invitational Tournament at Clarkson. |
