SAINTS LOSE TO UNION, 76-70 Jan. 29: The St. Lawrence men’s basketball team lost to Union today 76-70 to fall to 4-13 overall, 2-5 in the Liberty League. With the win, the Dutchmen earn a 10-8 overall record, and become 4-3 in conference. The Saints jumped out to an early lead scoring 5 unanswered points, but Union would fight to stay in it. SLU had the lead throughout the first half, only giving it up for a tie at 22-22 at 8:13, but quickly regained the lead. Union was on top once in the first half for 30 seconds before giving the lead back to the Saints. Almost three minutes into the second half, Union took the lead, and the two teams gave it back and forth a few times until 5:02 when John Cagianello nailed a 3 pointer to put the Dutchmen on top. Union would not give the lead back. Aaron Marshall led all scorers with 26 points, shooting 12 of 16, and making both of his free throw attempts. He added 5 assists and 6 rebounds. Matt Blue scored 14 on the night, shooting 5 of 10 from the field including 2 three pointers. Tyler Shaver hit 3 from behind the arc and finished with 11 on the night. For Union, Cagianello ended with 23 points and 5 boards. Five of his 7 field goals were three pointers, and he shot 4-4 from the stripe. Devon Bruce scored 16 points, and grabbed 4 rebounds. He shot 6-8 from the floor, including going 4-4 from the line. The Saints will face off against RPI and Vassar next weekend to begin the second half of the Liberty League season. They will play on Friday at 8:00 pm, and Saturday at 4:00 pm. SLU LOSES HARD FOUGHT BATTLE TO SKIDMORE Jan. 28: The St. Lawrence men’s basketball team lost to Skidmore tonight 69-61 at home in Burkman Gymnasium to fall to 4-12 on the year, 2-4 in the Liberty League. With the win, Skidmore improves to 9-6 on the year, 3-3 in conference. Tyler Shaver opened the game with a three-pointer from the corner. Skidmore’s Dana Martin would counter with a 3 of his own 3 minutes later to tie the game early. The game remained close throughout the half with the Saints earning a 6 point lead with 12:18 left. Skidmore went ahead by as many as 5 with 6:06 remaining in the half. At halftime, the score was 34-31 in favor of Skidmore. The Saints were shooting 40% from the floor, and 33% from behind the arc. The Thoroughbreds were almost 40% from the field, and over 46% from three-point range, hitting 7 of 15 in the first half. Martin has 16 at the half, and would finish with 22. With 15:48 left in the second half, Martin hit a 3 and was fouled by Keith Sullivan. He could not convert the 4 point play, and the score remained 46-39 in favor of Skidmore. SLU pulled within 1 with 10 minutes left to play thanks to a 3 point play by Aaron Marshall. Matt Blue was fouled attempting a 3 pointer and made 2 of 3 from the line to get the Saints to within 3. Skidmore would go ahead by 5 thanks to a lay-up from Fran Murray. They would then make 3 of 4 free-throws to put the game out of reach. On the night, Marshall had a game high 25 points, and a game high 16 rebounds. Sullivan finished with 12 points, going 5-13 from the field and hitting 2 threes. He also contributed 4 assists. For Skidmore, Martin shot 8-15 from the field and hit 6 three-pointers. Michael Murray scored 12 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and assisted 3 shots. The Saints play tomorrow against Union at home at 4:00 pm. SAINTS FALL TO CLARKSON, 65-60 Jan. 25: The Clarkson University Men's Basketball team ended a five-game losing streak with a 65-60 Liberty League conference victory over St. Lawrence Tuesday night at Alumni Gym. Clarkson improved to 5-11 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while St. Lawrence dropped to 4-11 and 2-3. The Golden Knights ended a four-game losing streak against the Saints with the win. Clarkson picked up another 3-pointer from Brandon Rigg-Reives and the Knights moved back out to a 32-29 lead at the half. Aaron Marshall, the Saints and the Liberty League's top scorer at 24.6 points per game, was held to just two points on 1-for-5 shooting in the opening 20 minutes. A 3-pointer from Tyler Shaver with 1:43 left cut the lead to two at 59-57. A lay up from Erick Vigansky with 31 seconds left gave the Knights a four-point advantage, which Vigansky added to with a pair of free throws to help assure the victory for Clarkson. The Saints are back in action this Friday night at 8:00 pm at Burkman Gymnasium to take on Skidmore College. They will face Union this Saturday at 4:00 pm.
