SPECIAL TEAMS HAUNT SAINTS IN
4-1 LOSS AT COLGATE

jAN. 19: St. Lawrence University’s power play woes continued Saturday night as Colgate killed six of seven Saint man advantages and had a shorthanded goal in a 4-1 win which left the Saints without a point in their two game road weekend in Central New York.

The Saints fall to 9-11-3 overall and 4-6-2 in the ECAC while Colgate is now 9-9-4 overall and 3-4-3 in league play.

St. Lawrence received another solid goaltending performance from Kain Tisi, who saw a number of point blank shots and came up with some big saves, but Tisi again did not get much goal support and fell to 1-4-1 on the season. He finished the game with 33 saves while the Raiders’ Mark Dekanich had 26.

“It was definitely a frustrating weekend for us in terms of special teams,” said Saint coach Joe Marsh. “The keys to the game today are special teams and goaltending, and while our goaltending is doing the job, we just didn’t have it on special teams this weekend.

“We’ll try to work on some things in practice this week and get things going in the right direction again with a big home weekend coming up.”

The weekend sweep leaves the Saints eighth in the current ECAC Hockey standings, but they have plenty of opportunity to rise with six home games and four more on the road left in league play.

The Saints got off to a good start in Saturday’s game, scoring the game’s first goal just as a power play expired. Aaron Bogosian sent the puck back to the point where Jared Ross took a hard shot which trickled through the pads of Raider goalie Mark Dekanich. The puck stopped short of the goal line, but Bogosian tapped it into the net for his fourth of the season at 4:35. Officially a power play goal, it was the only one in 14 chances in the two weekend games for the Saints.

The Raiders took advantage of a Saint turnover to pull even almost five minutes later. David McIntyre was alone in the center slot when the puck rolled off a Saint defender’s stick and McIntyre buried his fifth at 9:31 to make it a 1-1 game. It stayed tied through the rest of the period, although both teams had chances to take the lead.

Tisi had a big second period with several big saves, but Colgate took a 2-1 lead just after a Saint power play expired. McIntyre came out of the penalty box and took a pass from Ben Camper, walking in on Tisi. The Saint sophomore made the first save and then two more in a scramble in front, but defenseman Kevin McNamara finally put the puck into the back of the net at 14:44 for the lead.

Colgate made it a 3-1 game 4:26 into the third as Tyler Burton scored his 12 th of the year, picking up a rebound after another solid first save by Tisi on McIntyre in tight. The Raiders iced the win with a shorthanded goal at 14:06 as the puck rolled off the stick of a Saint forward deep in the SLU defensive zone and Jesse Winchester rifled it past Tisi for his seventh of the year, unassisted.
