DARTMOUTH TIPS SAINTS 2-1

Nov. 2: Senior wing J.T. Wyman snapped a 1-1 tie with his third goal of the season at 16:20 of the second period and senior goaltender Mike Devine made it stand up with a 29-save performance as Dartmouth edged 16 th-ranked St. Lawrence 2-1 in a ECAC Hockey League game in Canton Friday night.

 

Dartmouth improved to 2-0 overall on the season with the win in its league opener while the Saints fall to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.

 

It was another frustrating night for the Saints, who played well, but couldn’t score despite some golden opportunities.

 

St. Lawrence, which outshot Dartmouth 30-24, took an early lead in the game as senior Charlie Giffin scored his fourth goal of the season on a power play from close range at 11:21 of the first period. That was the only puck that would get past Devine, who made some outstanding saves to earn his second win of the season.

 

“That was a great job by Dartmouth,” said Saint coach Joe Marsh. “We had some great chances, but Devine played extremely well and robbed a couple of guys from right in front. Dartmouth has come back strong considering the kids they lost to graduation or early signings.

 

“We need to be sharper mentally. I think the effort is there, but we need to pay the price physically.”

 

The Big Green tied it at 1:26 of the second period as senior wing Nick Johnson scored on a shot from the side boards through traffic which beat Saint goalie Kain Tisi along the ice. Wyman then scored the game winner when he got a step on a Saint defender and soloed on Tisi, snapping a shot just under the crossbar at 16:20 for the deciding goal.

 

Devine robbed Saint senior Jordan Hack from point blank range late in the second and then came up big twice in the third period on Saint junior center Brock McBride to keep the Big Green in front. The Saints pulled Tisi for the extra attacker with 1:04 to play, but could only get one good look in the final minute and a hard shot went just wide.
